John Willington Shelton born circa 1789 son of John Shelton of Rossmore House and his
wife Elizabeth Willington. He fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Captain Shelton
of the 28th Regiment married Mary Richards on 14 Aug 1817 at Alverstoke. Mary was
the eldest daughter of John Richards of Gosport. His sisters Alicia and Susannah and his
brother Charles were all living at Rossmore when the house was attacked in February
1822 by an armed party of insurgents. Alicia later identified the ring leader and he was
sentenced to death. His father died in 1824. John was appointed a JP of county Limerick
in 1831. His mother died in 1838. John died 19 Jul 1848 at Monkstown, Cork.
Mary secondly married Major General Pater Faddy, R A of Heavitree, Exeter on 3 Jul 1862
at St James’ Church, Westbourne Terrace, her son Grantley conducted the ceremony.
She died 16 Mar 1874 at Rossmore House and Peter died same place on 19 Jul 1879.
1 Grantley John Willington Shelton eldest son born circa 1820 took Holy Orders. He
was the perpetual curate of Chelmondiston, Suffolk and married Rosa on
12 Oct 1847 at St Peter Parmentergate, Norwich. Rosa was the second daughter
and co-heiress of the late Robert Read Hills of St Faith’s Place, county Norfolk. He
was appointed to the curacy of Coreomohide in 1849 and in 1853 he was presented
with the vicarage of Killogholehane by Lord Muskerry. Grantley died 8 Jun 1882 in
Cork. Rosa died on 27 Jul 1908 at 3 Stillorgan Park, Blackrock aged 80 and was
buried at Deansgrange.
1 Mary Shelton born November 1848 at Chelmondiston. She was a spinster
living at Avoca Avenue Stillorgan in 1901 with her mother. She died at 3 Park
Villas, Stillorgan on 21 Mar 1929 and was buried at Deansgrange.
2 Grantley Deane (Deane) Shelton born February 1852 at Rossmore. He was a
lieutenant in the Limerick Militia in 1873. Deane of Rossmore married Emma
Anne Atkinson on 28 Mar 1880 at Sandford Church. Emma was the daughter
of Dr Edward Atkinson and his wife Rosetta McCulloch of Glenwilliam Castle,
Ballingarry, Co Limerick. The family lived at Glen Albyn from 1898 to 1899.
They also had a marine residence at 1 Atlantic Way, Tramore, Co Waterford
which Emma rented out from time to time. They had eight children of whom
seven survived in 1911 and Emma was living at 15 Eaton Square, Terenure.
Deane was in Canada staying with his son Deane in 1911. Deane disposed of
Rossmore House, Charleville by private treaty and in 1919 the household
furniture and outdoor effects were sold by auction. Emma was living at
Southsea by 1925. Deane died 8 May 1928 at the Wavecrest Hotel, Dun
Laoghaire and was buried at Deansgrange with his parents. Emma died
29 May 1936 at a nursing home in Guildford. Her funeral was held at West
Clandon Church, Surrey.
1 Augustus Grantley Shelton born 15 Mar 1883 at Marlboro Road died
27 Aug 1886 at Kilkee, Co Clare.
2 Mary Olive Emma (Olive) Shelton eldest daughter born 7 Mar 1884 at
Marlborough Road. Olive was living at 3 Stillorgan Park and married
Henry Ridgway on 11 Feb 1915 at All Saint’s Church. Henry was a butter
merchant and the son of Richard Grubb Ridgway, a butter merchant.
3 Deane Grantley Shelton born 19 Jul 1886 at 38 Marlborough Road,
Donnybrook. Deane emigrated to Canada circa 1907 to work at the
Mauncell brothers’ (from Limerick) ranch at McLeod, Alberta. Grantley
worked his own ranch and then enlisted with Canadian Expeditionary
Force in 1917. He moved to Seattle and married Marylin McDonald of
Montana. He died on 16 May 1945. His ashes were returned to Ireland
in 1946 to be buried at Ballingarry, Co Limerick.
4 Rosa Kathleen Shelton second daughter born 17 Sep 1887 at 38
Marlboro Road. Rosa married Thomas J Eld Hiffernan on 31 Oct 1914 at
Rathfarnham Church. Thomas was a clerk with the Munster and Leinster
Bank, Fethard, Co Tipperary and the eldest son of Thomas Eld Hiffernan,
formerly of Dunbarry House, Buttevant, Co Cork.
5 Edward Willington Shelton born 15 Aug 1889 at 38 Marlboro Road.
Private Edward Willington Shelton, 15th Battalion and British Columbia
Contingent, Canadian Expeditionary Force, died of wounds at Rouen on
16 Jun 1915. He is found on the 1901 census living with his aunt at Avoca
Avenue and in 1911 he was living in Canada with his brother Deane. Both
his sisters were married at All Saints Church, Blackrock and there is a
plaque mounted in one of the windows in his memory. He is also
remembered on the Rathfarnham War Memorial Hall dedication plaque.
6 Augustus Durbin Shelton born 11 Dec 1890 at Rossmore, Co Limerick. He
joined the Royal Army Service Corps and served during WW1. Augustus a
tea planter of Doom Dooma, Assam, India married Muriel Mary Bolster in
September 1934 in London. Muriel was the second daughter of the late Mr
Sharp-Bolster of Glenlohane, Kanturk, Co Cork.
7 Rowena Mary Shelton born circa 1892 in Dublin. Rowena married Maurice
Stoney Moore at All Saints in 16 Feb 1920. Maurice was the son of Lieutenant
Colonel Maurice Moore of Sunderland. Her brother Deane gave her away.
8 Emma Norah (Nora) Shelton youngest daughter born 11 Dec 1893 at 38
Marlboro Road. She was engaged to Hugh Arthur Willoughby
Cole-Hamilton in 1917. Hugh was a major in the 2nd York and Lancaster
Regiment and the son of John Cole-Hamilton of St Kilda, Cheltenham and the
grandson of Major A W Cole-Hamilton of Beltrim, Co Tyrone, but it appears
that they never married. Nora married Frederick Roberts Guinness on
15 Jan 1925 at Portsmouth. Frederick was the son of Howard Guinness of
Clandon Regis, West Clandon. Frederick was a wool merchant. They lived at
West Horsley, Guildford in 1939 and later moved to Capetown.
2 George Frederick Augustus (Augustus) Shelton second son born 23 Oct 1821 graduated
MB Trinity in 1842 and was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons. He was in China
when appointed a surgeon with the 28th Regiment in 1845 in China ordered to Bombay.
He was appointed Surgeon Major in 1865 and Surgeon General in 1880. He retired in
1882 and died on 12 Oct 1895 at Piccadilly, London.
3 Jonathan Robert Willington (Willington) Shelton youngest son born 19 Nov 1826 at Friars
Lane, Richmond, Surrey. He was commissioned without purchase in 1842. He was with
the 28th Regiment and married Emily Mary Hills on 4 Jul 1848 at Norwich. Emily was the
eldest daughter of the late Read Robert Hills of Norwich. Willington of the Maison Salvi,
Nice, France died 12 April 1902. Probate to his widow Emily.
