John Sealy born circa 1822 son of Richard Sealy, a merchant. John a merchant of Longwood
Avenue, Portobello and of Ballinteer Villa when he married Margaret Shaw on 29 May 1862
at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin. Margaret was living at 83 Talbot Street and was the daughter of
Christopher Shaw, a surgeon. John was a partner in Messrs Sealy, Bryers and Walker, printers
of Middle Abbey Street. John also traded from 55 Wicklow Street and in 1904 set up a new
company with two of his sons and traded as J Sealy & Co, wholesale wine and spirit merchants.
They had eleven children of whom nine survived in 1911. John, a tea and wine merchant
moved to Arbour Field in Faranboley, Dundrum (a large house with a cottage and gatelodge
(rented to James & Elizabeth Dobbs) on 27 acres which later became the site of Dundrum
Business Centre) circa 1872. John also owned at least four cottages close to the estate. His
brother James of Shortalstown died in 1905 and John was his executor. John died 27 Oct 1910
at Arbour field and was buried at Rathmacknee in Wexford. He left 22k in personal estate and
his executor was his wife. Margaret died 4 Jul 1920 at Arbourfield, the informant Elizabeth
Dobbs of Arbour Field gatelodge. She is buried with her husband. Arbourfield was put up for
sale after her death.
1 Ellen Gertrude Leahy Sealy born 30 Jan 1864 at 83 Talbot Street. She married Robert
Lockgart Smyth Donaldson at Taney Church on 19 Jul 1900. Robert was a doctor living
at Monaghan and the eldest son of Robert Donaldson, MRCS, Fort Hill, Castleshawe and
Chichester Terrace, Belfast.
2 Annie Christina Sealy born 2 Jul 1865 at Ballinteer Villa. She was unmarried and living
with her mother in 1911. She died unmarried on the 26 Jan 1933 at Slievemore,
Greystones and was buried at Powerscourt Churchyard, Enniskerry.
3 Eliza Mary Sealy born 7 Jan 1867 at Ballinteer Villa died on 23 Jun 1874 aged 7 at
Arbourfield.
4 Richard James Sealy eldest son born 8 Aug 1868 at Ballinteer Villa. He was a tea and
wine merchant and married Winifred Mary Langridge at St Andrew’s Westminster on
27 Jul 1904. Winifred was the fourth daughter of Henry Langridge of 54 Victoria Street
and Chillies, Buxted. She was also a hockey player and played against Eva Sealy in the
first hockey match between Ireland and England in 1896. They were living at
Rathmichael Lodge, Shankill in 1911 and had one child. Richard died on 9 Oct 1923
and Winifred died on 11 Jun 1959, both are buried at Rathmacknee.

5 Christopher Shaw Sealy second son born 16 Feb 1870 at Ballinteer Villa, Dundrum. He was
a bachelor living with his mother in 1911. He served with British Red Cross Society & Order
of St John during the war. He was a tea planter living in Arratenne, Madulkelle, Ceylon and
married Muriel Mary Rogers on 9 Oct 1912 at St Peter’s, Bedford. Muriel was the only
daughter of the late Rev W H Rogers, DD of Beecroft House, De Pary’s Avenue, Bedford.
He managed the tea estate in Ceylon until 1920. He lived at Roebuck Grove from 1924 to
1931 and they were living at 32 Ailesbury Road in 1933. He died at Portobello House on
28 Sep 1941 late of Cappaghmore, Clondalkin. Muriel died at the Metropole Hotel in Cork on
25 Feb 1948.
1 Ada Doreen Seely only daughter born circa 1915 married John Ivor Horgan on
12 Jul 1941 at St Brigid’s RC Church, Kildare. John was an Irish army officer and the son
of John Joseph Horgan, a solicitor.
6 Evelyn Margaret Sealy born 20 Jul 1871 at Ballinteer Villa. She was an international hockey
player with her club the Dundrum Magpies. She married Joseph Neidhardt Dobbs on
15 Sep 1906 at Rathmacknee Church. Joseph was the son of William Dobbs, JP and land agent.
They were living in Dundrum in 1911.
7 John Sealy born 13 Jan 1873 at Arbourfield. He was a tea planter and died on 13 Apr 1904 at
Arratenne Tea Estate, Ceylon of enteric.
8 Florence May Sealy born 4 May 1874 at Arbourfield. She married William Bellingham Dobbs at
Taney Church on 3 Jun 1898. William was the son of William Dobbs, JP and land agent.
9 James Sealy fourth son born 19 Mar 1876 at Arbourfield. He was a law student living with his
mother in 1911. He was capped for Ireland in both hockey and rugby in the same year 1895
and had a total of caps including one in 1899 when Ireland won the Triple Crown. He
graduated Trinity College and was called to the bar in 1902 and took silk in 1918. James a
barrister of Ashfield, Dundrum married Stella Frances Geoghegan on 4 Jan 1902 at Holy Trinity
Church Killiney. Stella was the daughter of Samuel Geoghegan of The Grove, Killiney. They had
at least nine children. James was temporary county court judge for Tipperary from 1921 to 1924
and circuit court judge for Tipperary and Waterford from 1924. Stella of St Margaret's, Stillorgan
Road, Donnybrook died on 16 Oct 1923 at Elpis Hospital, Dublin and is buried at Mount Jerome
with her son Christopher.

2 Joan Sealy born 26 Aug 1903 at 14 Lower Leeson Street staying with her grandmother
Sealy in 1911. She married George Daniel Chadwick 12 Sep 1934. George was an
accountant living at Raglan Road and was the son of Robert Chadwick, a barrister.
3 Infant girl Sealy born 28 Feb 1905 at 14 Lower Leeson Street died on 1 Mar 1905 after 8½
hours at same place.
4 Brenda Sealy born 23 Aug 1906 at 14 Lower Leeson Street. She married Gerald Spence
Smyth, MD, FRCPI in 1938 in Cape Town.
5 John Samuel Geoghegan Sealy born 3 Nov 1911 at 14 Lower Leeson Street. He married
Cathleen Sydney Grace Smyth on 8 Apr 1948 at Sandford Church. Cathleen was the
daughter of Weber Smyth.
6 Stella Mary Sealy born 18 Apr 1914 at 4 Wilton Place. She married Alfred D G Isherwood in
1943 at St Germans, Cornwall.
7 James Richard Sealy born 6 May 1917 at Wilton Place was in the Royal Navy in 1945.
8 Christopher Glen Sealy born 30 Sep 1919 at 6 Wilton Place and died of whooping Cough on
21 May 1920 aged 7 months and is buried at Mount Jerome.
9 Felicity Ann Sealy born 24 Jan 1922 at St Margaret’s, Donnybrook. She was living at
Ailesbury Road in 1950 and travelled to Cape Town.
James secondly married Mary Una (Una) Hyde on 14 May 1927 at the Parish Church of St Ann,
Dublin. Mary was the daughter of Dr Douglas Hyde, 1st President of Ireland, and Lucy Cometina
Kurtzon and they had a number of children. James retired in 1948 and died on 4 Feb 1949 at St
Margaret’s, Donnybrook. He is buried at St Patrick’s, Powerscourt.
10 Henry George (Harry) Sealy born 30 Jun 1879 at Arbourfield, Dundrum. He was with the 130th
Prince of Wales's Own Baluchis and married Rosamond Margaret O’Neill on 9 Mar 1908 at Trinity
Church, Karachi, India. Rosamond was the only daughter of the late Heremon F O’Neill, captain
in the Royal Irish Fusilier.

11 Olive Mary Sealy born 13 Mar 1881 at Arbourfield. She married Frederic William Arthur Pett on
21 Nov 1907 at Taney Church. Frederic was a tea planter of Waragalande, Ceylon and the son of
the late Colonel George Thornton Pett, OSD. They had at least two children. They were living in
Abbotsford Manor Road, Seaton in 1939.
