Charles Maximilian Schroder born circa 1851 in Germany grandson of Johann Heinrich
Schröder. He married Henrietta Inez Walsh on 25.09.1877 at Croyden and they were living in
Coogee Bay, Sydney by 1880. In 1888 Max appeared in court charged with forging bills of
exchange in Paris in the name of Grand and Peek a wholesale jewellers in Soho, London. He
was arrested under warrant in Sydney and returned to London to face charges. Max was a
nephew to Baron John Henry William Von Schroder, a merchant banker of The Dell, Windsor
and partner in J Henry Schroder & Co. His debts were paid by the family and he didn't go to
prison. From 1900 to 1901 the family were living at Charleville, Blackrock, Co Dublin and Max
went bankrupt with liabilities of 18k. In 1910 his uncle died leaving 2 million in personal estate.
Family, servants, gardeners andstaff all received bequests but Max and his family were not
mentioned in the will. By 1911 Harriet and their children were living at 10 Canfield Gardens,
Hampstead, London. Henrietta died 5 Feb 1933 at Middlesex and left 2k in personal estate.
1 Frances Janet Eveline Schroder baptised 21.09.1878 at Brighthelmstone now known
as Brighton, Sussex.
2 Daughter Schroder born 05.03.1880 at Coogee Bay, Sydney.
3 Alice Florence Inez Schroder born 1882 Paris. Alice was at Carmen’s wedding in 1911
and she married Frank William Gunton in January 1913 at Hampstead. In 1921 they
were living at 26 Rosefield Road, Staines, Middlesex.
4 Carmen Helene Schroder 3rd daughter born circa 1886 in Paris married James Buckel
Edmeston eldest son of late James Edmeston a prominent City Architect and a
resident of Ealing and cousin of Sir Archibald Edmeston of Blane Castle, Duntreith,
Stirling and Lancaster Gate on 29.04.1911 at All Souls Church, London Road. Carmen
was given away by her mother and attended by her sisters Cecile and Gladys. The
family were living at Little Golford, Cranbrook, Kent in 1939.
5 Gladys Valeska Evelyn Margaret Schroder born in Sydney baptised 17.03.1889 at Ryde,
Hampshire. She was an attendant at her sister’s Carmen wedding in 1911. Gladys
married William Frederick Andouin Lambe on 10.01.1914 at St John the Baptist Church,
Great Marlborough Street, London. William was a widower, secretary to a motor car
company and son of Joseph Boyce Lambe.
