Franz Robert (Robert Francis) Scharff born 09.07.1858 in Leeds to German parents Edward John
Schaff and Johanna Emilie Osterrieth. He was educated at University College London, the
Universities of Heidelberg, Edinburgh and Bordeaux and the Marine Laboratories of Naples and St
Andrew’s. He was living at the South Circular Road, Dublin and married Alice Hutton on 06.06.1889
at the Unitarian Church on Stephen's Green. Alice was the youngest daughter of Lucius Octavius
Hutton, coach builder of 8 Fitzwilliam Place and Wyckham, Dundrum.
Robert was appointed Keeper in the Museum of Science and Art, Dublin in 1891. A Zoologist known
for his understanding of Irish flora and fauna, he was Acting Director of the National Museum of
Ireland from 1916 to 1922. They lived at Tudor House from 1898 to 1913. Alice died at Ivanhoe
Nursing Home late of Knockranny, Bray in the 1918 flu pandemic, the Informant G E Scharff.

married Hilda Hardy circa 29.03.1917 at Croydon, Surrey.

2 John William Scharff born 12.05.1895 at 9 Leeson Park married Kathleen Dorothy
Fitzmaurice daughter of Francis Boland Fitzmaurice a Bank Clerk of the Cove, Tramore. John
became a surgeon in the navy and they married in Glasgow in 1915. They went to live in
Singapore and Francis Horton became a paying guest in their home. In January 1921 he
found a note saying 'This is just to bid you goodbye and although my blessing may avail
little ‘God bless you. Take care of my Sheila my poor wee golden haired girlie. I pray I may
never have another child'. John was granted a decree nisi in July 1922 on the grounds of the
misconduct of his wife with Francis James Horton.

John married secondly Kathleen Esther Burn daughter of Sir Joseph and Lady Burn of Rydal
Mount, Potters Bar on 14.02.1925 at Marylebone Presbyterian Church, Bryanston Square,
London.
Robert of Knockranny, Bray married secondly Jane Stephens also a Zoologist a leading authority on
sponges of the Rectory, Leeson Park daughter of Albert Stephens of 11 Grosvenor Place on 02.06.1920
at Christ Church, Leeson Park. Robert died 13.09.1934 at 24 Broadwater Road, Worthing In 1939 Jane
a widow was living with her daughter Marjorie in Camden.
