Sandham Symes born circa 1771. He was a solicitor of York Street when he married Barbara
Warren in April 1804. Barbara was the daughter of Robert Warren of Jervis Street. After they
married they lived at 43 Jervis Street. By 1822 they had moved to Dominick Street. Barbara
the mother of ten children died after falling off a step ladder in the pantry in March 1825 at
55 Dominic Street, Dublin.
1 Robert Symes eldest son baptised at St Mary’s Church 6 Mar 1805 admitted Kings Inns.
He was a solicitor of Dublin when he married Ellen Martha Dowse on 15 Oct 1833.
Martha was the second daughter of Richard Henry Dowse of Ballyellis, Co Wexford.
Robert was in partnership with his brother James with a practice at Rutland Square
and later at Frederick Street. Robert was living in Hillview, Co Wicklow in 1853.
Eleanor died a widow on 25 Apr 1890 at Wingfield, Co Wexford and is buried at
Kilcommon, Co Wicklow.
2 John Symes born circa 1806 mentioned as a residuary legatee in 1854, possible death
in Hillview in 1855.
3 Sandham Symes baptised at St Mary’s Church on 3 Jul 1807 was an architect of 55
Dominic Street. He designed a building in South Great George's Street for the Pim
family. He was architect to the Bank of Ireland. Sandham went up in a balloon with
W H Bateman, a comic singer, in John Hampton's grand Hampton's grand 77th ascent
with his new royal Irish national balloon, Erin-Go-Bragh on Easter Monday, 24 Apr 1848.
He designed the Jackson Alms House in Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone as well as houses in
Killiney for his grandfather Robert Warren. He also designed Holy Trinity Church of
Ireland in Killiney on land his grandfather had donated. He was cousin to Glascott
Symes. He never married, instead he painted, and travelled the world. He died on
27 Jun 1894 and is buried at Mount Jerome, his brothers Charles and William attended
his funeral.
4 James Symes fourth son baptised 4 Jul 1808 at St Mary’s Church admitted Kings Inns.
He married Richarda Henrietta McNally on 23 May 1836. He was a solicitor with a
practice at Eccles Street. Richarda died 30 Mar 1860. He was insolvent and a prisoner
in the Four Courts Marshalsea in 1865. James died a widower on 14 Apr 1892 at the
residence of Robert Warren Symes of 3 College Green.

6 Thomas Symes fifth son baptised 9 May 1811 at St Mary’s Church was admitted Kings
Inns. He was living at 55 Dominick Street when he married Anne Atkinson on
4 May 1841 at St George’s Church, Dublin. He was at Bayview, Camolin by 1842 where
he registered 2 guns and 3 pistols. The out offices were burned down that year. He
put the house in Camolin up for auction and returned to 58 Dominick Street in 1863.
He practiced as a solicitor from 58 Dominick Street. He died at Fairview Avenue on
5 Jul 1870.

7 Barbara Catherine Symes baptised at St Mary’s Church on 20 Aug 1812. As only
daughter she married Richard W Swan on 30 Jul 1839. Richard was a barrister and the
younger son of the late Percival Swan of Summerseat House, Co Wexford. Barbara died
23 Sep 1863 and is buried at Mount Jerome.
8 William Symes born circa 1818. He married Louisa Caroline Galbraith on 16 Feb 1847
in Wicklow town. Louisa was the daughter of Captain William Galbraith. He was a medical
doctor of Skerries and died 1 Aug 1901 at Rathmines Park.
1 William Sandham Symes eldest son. He was a medical doctor and died in
Derbyshire in 1903.
2 Charles Arthur Symes youngest born circa 1855. He was a banker and died in 1912
in Birr.
3 Juliette Emma Symes youngest daughter married Robert de Witte Gray on
9 Oct 1883 at Holmpatrick Church, Skerries. Robert was the only son of Richard
Armstrong Gray, CE and County Surveyor for Dublin.
9 George Symes baptised 27 Dec 1822 at St Mary’s Church. Not mentioned as a residuary
legatee in 1854.
10 Richard Symes eighth son born circa 1822. He married Jane Frances Fraser on
4 Aug 1853 at St George’s Church. Jane was the eldest daughter of Andrew Fraser
of the Commissariat Department. They lived at The Mall, Drogheda and Richard
died at the home of his brother William in Skerries on 25 Jul 1865.
11 Abraham Symes youngest and ninth son born circa 1823 educated at Trinity and
admitted Kings Inns in 1848. He married Eliza Yeo Lyon on 10 Sep 1851 at
Dunganstown Church. Eliza was the second daughter of Lieutenant Francis Lyon,
RN, of Co Wicklow. Abraham died at Morristown, Kill, Co Kildare on 27 Aug 1861.
Eliza died at Ballybrittas on 17 Jan 1914 aged 92.

Mary’s.
2 Barbara Penelope Symes born 14 Dec 1853 at 35 Nelson Street baptised at St
George’s. She married Geoghegan Hillinsworth in 25 May 1872 at Rathmore
Church.
3 Sandham Francis Symes born 27 Jul 1855 at Morristown, Co Kildare. As only
surviving son, he married Lavinia Littleboy on 17 Nov 1881 at the Presbyterian
Church in Naas. Lavinia was the daughter of Charles Littleboy of Barberstown
Castle, Straffan. Lavinia died 11 Dec 1918 at Barberstown Castle and is buried
at Mount Jerome.
4 Henrietta Symes born 6 Sep 1857 at Morristown Co Kildare married Peter Reilly
and they lived at Ballybrittas in Queens County.
Sandham secondly married Ann Swan at St Mary’s Church on 8 Jun 1829. Ann was the third
daughter of the late Joseph Swan. Sandham died 27 Mar 1845 at his residence Hillview, Co
Wexford late of Dominick Street. Anne died at Lower Dominick Street aged 69 on 28 Dec 1853.
