Devonsher John Rowan born 19 Dec 1832 in Dublin son of Hill Wilson Rowan and Eliza
Villiers Jackson and the grandson of Strettell Jackson. He was a civil engineer based in Dundalk
and married Elizabeth Frances (Lily) Purcell on 10 Jan 1865 at Walcot Church, Bath. Lily was
the youngest daughter of Vice Admiral Edward Purcell of Camden Crescent, Bath. By 1871
Devonsher was district engineer for the Midland Great Western Railway. They lived at
Rockmount Cottage Dundrum for a few years before moving to Eastwood in Ballinteer.
Devonsher died 29 Jan 1901 at Granite Lodge, Glenageary and is buried at Deansgrange. He
left 8k in personal estate and probate was to his wife. By 1911 Lily was living at Meads Road,
Eastbourne with her daughter Grace and Frances. Lily died 27 Feb 1924 at Eastbourne and left
6k in personal estate.
1 Frances Elizabeth Rowan born 2 Dec 1865 at Seatownplace, Dundalk. She was living with
her mother in Glenageary in 1901. She was living with her sister Grace at Meads Road,
Eastbourne in 1939. As eldest and last surviving child she died unmarried at Eastbourne
on 3 Jan 1957.
2 Eliza Villiers (Eva) Rowan born 24 Oct 1867 at Seatownplace, Dundalk died unmarried on
10 Apr 1889 at Eastwood, Ballinteer and is buried at St Nahi’s Churchtown.
3 Hill Wilson Rowan born 17 May 1869 at Athlone Station, Co Westmeath. He was a
journalist living at Bayswater, London and married Annabella Ellen Wilson from
Limerick on 24 Sep 1902 at the Mariner’s Church, Kingstown. Annabella was the
daughter of Charles Monck Wilson. Hill was a lawn tennis coach and journalist and
Annabella was secretary to the Society of Genealogists in Bloomsbury Square in 1921.
Hill died 3 Apr 1951 at Hampstead, probate to his wife and daughter Eileen.
1 Eileen Hill Wilson Rowan born 1904 in Bayswater trained as a teacher at St Mary's
College, Lancaster Gate. She married Thomas R Gubbins at Hampstead in 1945.
2 Alla Hamilton Rowan born 1911 in Hampstead.
4 Lydia Grace (Grace L) Rowan born 6 Jul 1871 at Athlone Station living with her mother in
Glenageary in 1901. She was living with her sister Frances at Meads Road, Eastbourne in
1939. She died unmarried at Eastbourne on 3 Jan 1946 and left 8k in personal estate.
Probate to her sister Frances and her nieces Alla Hamilton Rowan, Eileen H Gubbins.
5 William Edward (Edward William) Rowan born 23 Nov 1873 at Athlone Station, in Co
Westmeath. He was a school master of modern languages living with his mother at
Glenageary in 1901 and living at East Grinstead in 1911. He married Alice Norah Meers
on 16 Sep 1929 at St John’s Church, Eastbourne. Alice was the daughter of Cecil Gunn of
the Red House, Bickley and the widow of Rupert Meers. Edward died at Eastbourne in 1937.
6 Devonsher Jackson Rowan born 11 Dec 1881 at Kingstown died 17 Mar 1889 at Eastwood,
Ballinteer and is buried at St Nahi’s, Churchtown.
