Rockfield Homestead
Richard Rothwell born circa 1799 was educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He was the son of
Thomas Rothwell and Helena Upton. He married Elizabeth Sutton on 10 Jun 1824. Elizabeth was
the only daughter of Rev Thomas Sutton, rector of Clongill and his wife Mary Martha. Richard
was a JP of Rockfield, Co Meath and appointed a DL in 1839. In the 1840’s Richard owned over
3,000 acres in Co Meath including 420 acres at Gerrardstown near Dunshaughlin which he leased
out. Richard died on 13 Aug 1853 at Rockfield. Elizabeth’s mother died at Rockfield on
31 Dec 1865 aged 86 and she moved to Mayfield Cottage, Dundrum. Elizabeth lived at Homestead
from 1868 and died there on 24 Nov 1871. Both are buried at St Columba's, Kells.
1 Mary Elizabeth Rothwell eldest daughter born circa 1825,married Rev Edward Butler of
Llangoed Castle, Breconshire as his fourth wife on 18 Jun 1868 at Cheltenham. Edward was
the son of the late Rev Richard Butler of Priestown House, near Dunboyne Co Meath.
Edward died 23 Feb 1877 aged 77. Mary died 27 Sep 1913 at College Yard, Worchester.
1 Katherine May Dorothea Butler born 28 Sep 1870 at Llangoed Castle married Ivor
Algernon Atkins in April 1899 at Cheltenham. Ivor was the organist at Worcestershire
Cathedral.
2 Helena Rothwell born circa 1827 died unmarried on 18 Nov 1906 at Brookfield Terrace,
Donnybrook and left 3k in personal estate. Her niece Elizabeth Fleming the informant.
3 Isabella Rothwell born circa 1829 married Captain William Drake Hague of the 15th Regiment
on 17 Aug 1865 at Kells. William was a widower and the son of the late Charles Bernard
Haque of Micklegate, York. Isabella died 6 Oct 1894 at St Ann’s Hill, Cork. William died
9 Nov 1903 at Russell’s Hotel, Stephen’s Green aged 78 and left 8k in personal estate.
4 Frances Maria (Fanny) Rothwell born circa 1831 married Rev John Richard Brougham, Vicar
of Killea, Co Waterford on 12 Jul 1855. He was vicar of Timolin in 1870 and they had just one
son. John died 27 Aug at Lee Road, Cork. Frances died 3 Jul 1917 at Passage West.
1 Richard Henry Vaux Brougham born 14 Mar 1870 at Homestead, Dundrum.
5 Emma Catherine Rothwell born circa 1833 married Rev Horace Townsend Fleming on
12 Feb 1863 at Kells Parish Church. Horace was based at St Michael’s Cork. They had five
children of whom three survived in 1911. Horace died 11 Dec 1909 in Cork aged 85. Emma
died 14 Feb 1923 at Sydenham Terrace, Monkstown, Cork.
6 Thomas Rothwell born 25 Jun 1834 at Rockfield was a lieutenant in the Co Meath Militia. He
was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. He was High Sheriff of Co Meath in 1867 and later
a JP and DL. He married Louisa Catherine Hannah Pratt on 28 Jun 1866 at Kingscourt, Co
Meath. Louisa was the daughter of Mervyn Pratt and Madeline Eglantine Jackson of Cabra
Castle. They had four children and initially lived at Ballybrack in Diblin. Thomas died on
1 Mar 1909 at Rockfield having been paralysed for three years. He left 34k in personal estate.
Louisa died at Rockfield aged 89 on 8 Dec 1929.
1 Emily Madeline Elizabeth Rothwell born 1 May 1867 at Merrion Square, Dublin. She
was a farmer and died unmarried at Rockfield on 15 Jan 1959.
2 Louisa Frances Rothwell born 14 Feb 1869 at Baggot Street, Dublin. She married Rev
James William ffrank Sheppard on 20 Jan 1904 at St Columcille Church, Kells. James
was the rector at Wouldham, Rochester, Kent. The reception was held at Rockfield and
the couple honeymooned in Italy. Louisa died 21 Jun 1965 at Dun Laoghaire. She was
buried at Kingscourt, Co Cavan.
3 Florence Isabella Rothwell third daughter born 12 Jul 1871 at Adelaide Road. She
married John Hampden Nicholson on 1 Aug 1894 at Balrathboyne Church. John was
the son of Christopher Nicholson.
4 Helen Grace Rothwell born 9 Dec 1873 at Rockfield, Co Meath. Helen was a farmer and
died unmarried at Rockfield on 14 Aug 1967.
7 Anne Upton (Anna) Rothwell born circa 1838. She died a spinster on 7 Jun 1873 at the Hill,
Monkstown, her brother John the informant. She left 3k in personal estate and her executor
was her brother Thomas.
8 John Sutton Rothwell younger son born circa 1842. He was a colonel in the Royal artillery. He
was a professor of Military Administration, at the Staff College, Sandhurst. He married Henrietta
Camilla Boyle on 21 Jan 1880 at All Saints, Ennismore Gardens, Knightsbridge. Henrietta was
the daughter of Vice-Admiral Alexander Boyle and Agnes Walker. John died 13 Mar 1893 at Park
Lodge, York Town. He was buried at St Columba's, Kells. Henrietta died at Sandhurst on
28 May 1902 aged 49.
1 Richard Sutton Rothwell born 18 Jan 1882 at Kensington joined the Royal Artillery. He
attained the rank of Major and was single in 1921. He died in 1962.
2 Mark Sutton Rothwell born 1 Apr 1883 at Kensington. He married Agnes G Grant on
21 Sep 1910 and was living in Croydon in 1911. He died in 1968 and left 90k in personal
estate.
3 Guy Sutton Rothwell born 22 Jan 1887 was a stockbroker and emigrated to Canada circa
1905.
