Robert Hall born circa 1785 was an Enniskillen merchant. He married Eliza Litton on
12 Aug 1803. Eliza was the sister of Edward Litton later an MP of Coleraine. Robert
purchased Merton Hall, Cloughjordan circa 1828 where Eliza died on 12 Feb 1829 and is
buried at Modreeny. The house was ransacked by seven armed men in 1835, arms and
money taken and it was attacked again in 1837. Robert was shot in the head and died on
19 May 1841 on a farm at Uskane, two miles outside Borrisokane which he had just
purchased. He is buried with his wife. Patrick Burns was executed for his murder in July
1842.
1 Jane Hall eldest daughter born circa 1804 married James Sheil of Larkfield, Co
Tyrone in August 1828. James died in 1853 and Jane died a widow on 19 Dec 1891
at Elgin Road, Dublin.
2 Rebecca Hall born circa 1807 died unmarried at High Field, Drumcondra on
19 Dec 1897 late of Shrewsbury Terrace, Rathgar. She left 8k in personal estate,
probate to her nephew Robert Sheil.
3 Elizabeth Hall born circa 1811 married John Andrews, MRCSI on 2 Jan 1834 at
Modreeny Church. John was the eldest son of Maunsell Andrews of Rathemoy House,
King’s County. They lived initially in Bray before moving to Cloughjordan on 1842
where Elizabeth died a widow on the 14 Feb 1898.
4 Frances Hall fourth daughter married James Johnston Clarke on 28 Apr 1837 at
Dunganstown Church. James was of Maghera, Co Derry.
5 Richard Hall eldest son born 21 Dec 1805 was admitted Kings Inns. He was the heir
of William Hall of Innismore Co Fermanagh. He married Maria Devereux on
18 Sep 1838 at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin. Maria was the daughter of Major
Decereux of Ballyrankin House, Co Wexford and Killimer Daly, Co Galway. They
lived at Innismore Hall, Derrybrusk, Lisbellaw, Fermanagh and had two daughters.
He was a JP and High Sheriff and died 6 Mar 1883. Maria died on 8 Jul 1887 at
Wigton aged 70.
1 Elizabeth Jane Hall eldest daughter married John Grey Vesey Porter JP DL, of
Belle Isle, in 1863 and they had no children. Elizabeth embarked on an affair
with Captain Leonard Poynter in 1870. Her husband found out and
horsewhipped the captain and successfully sued for divorce. Elizabeth died
in Kensington on 21 Jan 1887.
2 Marion Hall younger daughter born circa 1849. She married George Gray, an
artist in 1874 in London. In 1884 they were granted the use of the surname
Hall in addition to Gray by Royal licence.
6 Robert Hall of Merton Hall, Tipperary married Mary Anna Clementson on 10 Feb 1843
in London. Mary Anna was born in India, the daughter of Frederick Fenby Clementson
of the Madras Civil Service. Robert died at Lisalea Blackrock on 3 Apr 1864 and is
buried at Modreeny. Mary Anna was living at Lota when probate was granted to her
in August 1864. In July 1865 she put the carriages plus all the furniture which she
had purchased for the house was up for sale through Arthur Jones and Co who had
produced it, citing 'a change in family arrangements' and 'leaving Ireland'. However,
by 1869 the family were living at Merton Hall and Mary Anna was managing the farm.
Over 1300 acres of the Hall estate was offered for sale in the Landed Estates' Court in
November 1877 and again in the Land Judges Court in 1878 and 1879. Mary Anna
died 14 Aug 1901 at Nenagh aged 80.

2 Frederick Hall second son born circa 1847 married Angel Hutchinson on
10 Sep 1878 at Dublin’s Registrar’s Office. Angel was the third surviving
daughter of John Hutchinson of Waterloo Road, Dublin. Frederick worked for
the Fisheries Commission and was staying with his sister Elise and his mother
in 1901. He was Inspector of Fisheries in Kilrush and took his own life on
2 Jun 1912 at Cappagh Lodge. His housekeeper had accidently shot herself
with his gun some months previously and he couldn’t forgive himself.
3 Elise Hall born circa 1849 married Thomas Henry Howard Short of the Bengal
Civil Service at Modreeny Church on 24 Sep 1872. Thomas was the eldest son
of the late William Shortt, MD of Kennitty. Elise died a widow on 9 Mar 1931
at Donnybrook aged 82 and is buried at Mount Jerome.
4 Ada Hall second daughter born circa 1850 in Tipperary married De Courcy
Plunkett Ireland on 28 Dec 1871 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. De Courcy was
an Inspector in the Royal Irish Constabulary and was of Abbeyville, Clonmel.
He purchased Merton Hall in 1879 for £9700. He died on 3 Jan 1892. Merton
Hall which was had been purchased by De Courcy was burnt down in 1895.
It appears that the house was never rebuilt although it is believed that she
had it insured for £3500. Ada moved into a smaller house on the estate and
Gertrude Russell was her guest in 1926. Ada died 28 Mar 1938 having survived
her five children. Her grandson Herbert Maunsell Ireland Russell* was her
executor and heir; he sold the estate to the Land Commission in 1941 and
planned to return to Australia.
1 Leila Mary De Courcy Ireland born 16 Dec 1874 died 31 Jan 1901 at
Merton Hall.
2 Madeline Wyndor de Courcy Ireland second daughter born 17 Nov 1876
died from epilepsy on 29 Apr 1890 at Stewarts Hospital.
3 Herbert Richard Hall Ireland on 21 Jan 1879. He was wounded on a
number of occasions and received the Military Cross in January 1916.
He succumbed to his injuries on 28 Mar 1918 and is buried at St Sever
Cemetery, Rouen, Seine-maritime, France. A stained glass window was
erected in Modreeny church in his memory.
4 Winder DeCourcy Plunket Ireland born 1 Apr 1882 accidently drowned
on 27 Feb 1884 in the River Suir outside Abbyville House.
5 De Courcy Wyndor Plunkett Ireland born 18 Jan 1885 was a Flight
Commander in 1914 and in command of the RNAS station at Great
Yarmouth. He married Myrtle Lloyd on 20 Oct 1915 at the Chapel Royal,
Savoy. Myrtle was the daughter of John Lloyd, King’s County. De Courcy
was killed on 21 Feb 1916 in a military airship accident over the River
Medway. A stained glass window was erected in Modreeny church in his
memory.
5 Herbert Litton Hall born 30 Oct 1853 at Merton Hall. He married Frances
Penelope Quin on 17 Feb 1875. Frances was living at Northumberland Avenue
in Kingstown and was the daughter of Thomas Quin. He died from typhoid
fever on 19 Dec 1878 at Ludford Cottage, Ballinteer. Arthur Jones and Son
made the funeral arrangements and he was interred in the family vault at
Modreeny.
1 Christopher Robert Herbert Lytton Hall born 21 Dec 1876. He married
Adeline Mary Keogh at All Saint’s in 1903. They lived in Knockraheen,
Wicklow with their two children. Adeline died in 1909 and Christopher
died in 1915 survived by two young children.
7 Anne Hall youngest daughter married John Minchin of the 4th Regiment on
9 Jul 1842 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. John was the only son of the George
Minchin of Busherstown, Kings County.
*It is not clear how Ada was related to Herbert Russell. Herbert was born 1909 at the
Rotunda Hospital to Gertrude Anne Dowell and Taylor Russell. Gertrude was the daughter
of George Dare Dowell and Mary Maunsell and was born in Devon. Gertrude married
Dr Bartholomew Taylor Russell in Australia in 1898. Her husband died in 1901 in Australia.
Gertrude was a widowed nurse living with her son in Kilmacanoge in 1911.
