Thomas Scot Martin born circa 1849 in Tyrone, son of Thomas Scott Martin, a farmer. Thomas
was a schoolmaster at Monaghan workhouse and married Letitia Riddell on 25 Jul 1869 at
Monaghan Parish Church. Letitia was resident at Monaghan workhouse and the daughter of
Gordon Riddell, a farmer. Thomas was a house and land agent of Wellington Park, Belfast in
1901 and an estate agent with offices as College Square East in 1911. They had seven
children of whom five survived in 1911. Thomas died 29 Feb 1920 at 26 Wellington Place. He
left 30k in personal estate and his will was disputed by his son Frederick. Letitia died
15 Apr 1927 at Wellington Park.
1 Frederick William Martin eldest son born 20 Jun 1870. He was a rent agent living at 46
Thorndale Avenue and married Minnetta Turner on 2 Jan 1894 at St Stephen’s Free Church.
Minnetta was the daughter of Adam Turner an auctioneer. Frederick took over his father’s
business after his death and died in November 1936.
1 Daisy Martin born 10 Aug 1899 at Clifton Street, Belfast staying with her Martin
grandparents in 1911.
2 Major Fred Martin only son serving in China in 1936.
2 John Gordon Martin born 30 Oct 1871 at the workhouse in Monaghan where his father was
working. He emigrated to Philadelphia circa 1890 and died in 1907.
3 Thomas Scott Martin born 24 Oct 1872 at the workhouse in Monaghan. He emigrated to
Philadelphia circa 1897. He married Martha Isabel Clements circa 1912 and died in 1932.
4 Walter Riddell Martin born 11 Dec 1875 at 154 Grosvenor Street, Belfast died 20 Oct 1876
aged 10 months.
5 Mary Letitia (Leta) Martin born 31 July 1878 in Belfast living with her parents at Wellington
Park in 1911. She married widower the Rev Frederick Edward Harte on 4 Sep 1912 in Belfast.
Frederick was a Methodist minister and the son of Frederick Harte, a Methodist minister.
6 Ethel Alicia Martin born 5 Jul 1888 at 46 Thorndale Avenue, Belfast living with her parents in
1901. She married John Freeman Sumner of Johannesburg, South Africa on 4 Mar 1908 in
Glasgow. John was the second son of John Sumner of University Avenue, Belfast.
7 Walter Riddell Martin born 15 Jan 1891 at 46 Thorndale Avenue, Belfast an assistant in an
estate office in 1911. He was living at Wellington Road, Belfast and married Annie Evelyn (Eva/
Evie) Lane Joynt on 21 Aug 1917 at St Mary’s RC Church, Haddington Road. Eva was living at
Carrisbrook House, Pembroke Road and was the daughter of William Russell Lane Joynt, a
barrister and his wife Annie (Nan) Quinn. William was a stock broker and they lived at Roebuck
Grove from 1921. Eva died on 31 Dec 1942 age 57 at St Vincent’s Private Hospital and left 4k in
personal estate. She is buried with her father in Deansgrange.
1 Anthony William Walter Riddell Martin born 20 Dec 1918 at Carrisbrook House,
Pembroke Road. He studied engineering but left to run a market garden and dairy farm
at Roebuck Grove. He later ran racing stables from the property. He married Sheila
Eileen Lewis in 1850 at Marylebone. Sheila was the daughter of Henry David Lewis and
his second wife Aileen Josephine MacNamara. They moved to Ardmunchan, a 341 acre
estate where they trained horses and were both very successful as owners and breeders.
Anthony moved back to Roebuck Grove in 1961 and his wife put the Ardmunchan estate
up for sale in 1962.
Walter secondly married Louisa Josephine Kieran on 30 Jun 1943 at Sandymount RC Church.
Louisa was living at Mespil Road and was the daughter of Thomas Kieran, a farmer. Walter died
on 7 Mar 1958 at Bayswater Terrace, Sandycove, his widow the informant.
