Mathew Rice born circa 1803 married Jane Reid in 1830. He was a merchant of 3 Anglesea
Street, Dublin trading as William Salmon & Co with partner Hugh Hines. The partnership sold
Roman cement and manufactured plaster of Paris. It was dissolved in 1831 and Mathew later
traded as Salmon Rice & Company and he continued to trade on his own account from 3
Anglesea Street. His residences were 10 Belgrave Square East and Newtown Park, Leixlip, Co
Kildare. Mathew died 15 Oct 1864 at 10 Belgrave Square East, Rathmines and was buried at
Mount Jerome. Jane died 15 Aug 1888 at Maryville, Cross Avenue, Blackrock and was buried
with her husband.
1 Ellen Georgina Rice eldest daughter born at Anglesea Street in August 1832. She
married Joseph Johnson of Maryville, Booterstown at St Andrew’s Church on 6 Jan 1852.
Joseph was a silversmith of 23 Wellington Quay and the son of Joseph Johnson, a
silversmith of London. Joseph died at Maryville on 10 May 1883 at Maryville aged 76,
probate to his widow Ellen and William Rice. Ellen died 18 Mar 1900 at 5 The Hill,
Monkstown.
1 Ellen Johnson elder daughter married Edward Henry Andrews on 10 Oct 1882
at Booterstown Church. Edward was the youngest son of Henry Andrews of
Hastings, Blackrock.
2 Margaret Johnson youngest daughter was living at Idrone Terrace and
married Albert Arthur Percy Andrews on 18 Apr 1891 at Booterstown Church.
Albert was the youngest son of George Andrews, JP of 112 Regents Park Road,
London.
2 Son Rice born at Anglesea Street in March 1831 died before 1860.
3 Mathew Rice born 5 Oct 1833 at Anglesea Street as eldest surviving son he died
19 Apr 1860 at 10 Belgrave Square.
4 William Rice born circa 1837. As eldest surviving son he qualified as a surgeon from
the RCSI in 1861. He was living at 62 Harcourt Street and married Ellen Hall on
30 Oct 1872 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Ellen was the daughter of Thomas Hall a
builder and was living at 63 Harcourt Street. They lived in Aurora, Enniskerry for a
number of years. William was appointed master and medical superintendent at St
Patrick’s Hospital for Lunatics and Idiots at Bow Lane from 1880 and they lived on
site. William resigned in 1884 and they moved to Roebuck Grove in 1884. He died
at his residence Roebuck Grove on 4 May 1885 and is buried at Mount Jerome.
Roebuck Grove was put up for sale in 1889. Ellen died 13 Apr 1907 at 32 Victoria
Road Rathgar and was buried with her husband.
1 Kathleen Mary Rice eldest daughter born 9 Feb 1874 at Enniskerry, Co Wicklow.
She married James William Bardon at Trinity Church, Rathmines on 7 Jul 1898.
James was an architect/builder and the second son of JC Bardon of Grosvenor
Square. James was working as a building contractor and they were living in
Greystones in 1911 with their five children. He enlisted and served with Royal
Engineers and attained the rank of captain. Kathleen died at Glenart, Dartry
Road on 21 Apr 1949 and was buried at Mount Jerome. James was a housing
inspector with the Soldiers and Sailors Land Trust. He retired after his wife’s
death and died 6 Sep 1960 aged 91 at St Lawrence’s Hospital late of Glenart,
Dartry Road. He was buried with his wife.
1 Iris Kathleen Bardon born 13 Jul 1899 at 48 Dartmouth Square,
Rathmines.
2 Alice Jane Rice born 19 Jul 1875 at Enniskerry, Co Wicklow was a short hand
writer in 1901. She was a clerk and died unmarried at Grangegorman Mental
Hospital on 25 Mar 1942. She is buried at Mount Jerome.
3 Helen Maud Rice third daughter born 21 Jun 1877 at Enniskerry, Co Wicklow.
She died unmarried at 32 Victoria Road, Rathgar on 17 Mar 1906 and was
buried at Mount Jerome.
4 William John Rice only son born 12 Jan 1881 at St Patrick’s Hospital married
Annie Clendining on 3 Oct 1914 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Annie was the
widow of Dr J H Clendining and the younger daughter of Richard J Wilson of
Fitzwilliam Square. William worked for Guinness’s Brewery and they lived at
Sandford Terrace. He was shot ‘while in discharge of his duty at Guinness’
when the military were occupying the malthouse on 29 Apr 1916. He is buried
at Mount Jerome.
5 Ada Margaret Rice youngest daughter born 7 Aug 1882 at Bray. She married
Noel Hudson on 12 Feb 1916 at St Ann’s Church, Dublin. Noel was the eldest
son of Alfred Arthur Hudson, KC of 44 Mount Street. He was a captain in the
British expeditionary Force, Royal Garrison Artillery.
5 Henry Rice fourth son born circa 1837 died 23 Dec 1860 at 10 Belgrave Square.
6 Frederick Rice born circa 1843 in Dublin City. living at 19 Kildare Street in 1888.
He was a commercial clerk working in the coal business. He died a bachelor on
22 Feb 1910 at 28 Upper Merrion Street and was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 Thomas Spring Rice fifth son qualified as surgeon from the RCSI in 1864. He was
lost at sea on 31 Jan 1870 in the royal mail steamer, City of Boston. The steamer
was travelling from Nova Scotia to Liverpool. Onboard was Captain Halcrow, plus
83 crew, 55 cabin passengers and 52 steerage passengers.
8 Arthur James Rice seventh son born 1844 died 27 Jan 1845.
9 Joseph Rice born 10 Mar 1846 at Anglesea Street. He took Holy orders. As youngest
surviving son he died a bachelor on 1 Dec 1887 at Monkstown Hospital. He is
buried at Mount Jerome.
10 Margaret Rice youngest daughter born circa 1842. She died unmarried at 10 Belgrave
Square on 2 Mar 1866 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
