Michael Powell born circa 1785 was a brewer of 113 James’ Street from 1811 to 1851. He was in
partnership with Richard & Robert Manders and traded as Manders & Powell. They were famous
for their double stout and their XX Dublin Porter and had numerous agents in Ireland as well as
agents in Norfolk, Birmingham and Cheltenham. Michael married Mary Anne Donohue at
Stephen’s Green, the residence of her mother on 21 Sep 1822. The marriage was registered at
St Andrews, Westland Row. Mary Anne was the daughter of the late Thomas Donohue, merchant
and wine importer. They lived at Springfield Roebuck in 1834 and at Richview, Clonskea from
1835 to 1844. Michael was a director of the Hibernian Fire & Life Insurance Company and
treasurer to the O’Connell Tribute for St James’s Parish. He was on the committee of the banquet
in honour of O’Connell held at Morrissons in 1840. He donated money to the Magdalen asylum in
Donnybrook, the St James Free School and St Vincents Hospital. Mary Ann died 6 Mar 1850.
Michael of Fitzwilliam Square East retired from Manders and Powell in 1851, Robert Geoghegan
was his successor at the firm and they subsequently traded as Robert Manders & Co. Michael
died 9 Jul 1853 at Fitzwilliam Square. He left 120k in personal estate and his son in law Michael
James Sweetman was his executor.
1 John Powell only surviving son died 5 Sep 1850.
2 James Powell second son died of typhus fever in October 1831.
3 Mary Margaret Powell baptised 4 Dec 1826 at St James’. She was an heiress and married
Michael James Sweetman on 9 Feb 1849 at St Andrew’s Church, Westland Row, Dublin.
The had at lease six children including the author M E Francis. The Sweetmans moved to
Brussels in 1873.
