Joseph Poulton
1 John Poulton born circa 1829 in Co Louth son of Joseph Poulton, a soldier. He was a
mariner living at Blackrock and married Joanna Strangeway on 14 Nov 1859 at
Monkstown. Johanna was a minor living at Booterstown and the daughter of Richard
Strangeway, a policeman. John was chief boatman with the coastguard in Malahide in
1873, coastguard in Kingstown in 1867 and coastguard at Laytown from 1876 to 1878.
John had retired by 1880. John a naval pensioner died 10 Nov 1909 at 7 Anglesea
Avenue, Blackrock and is buried at Deansgrange. Johanna a widow living at Anglesea
Avenue, Blackrock in 1911 and five of their eight children had survived. Johanna died
4 Apr 1929 at 7 Anglesea Avenue aged 87 and is buried at Deansgrange.
1 Marie Jane Anna Poulton born circa 1861 living at Clonliffe Road married Jonathan
Sparrow on 13 Feb 1895 at St George’s Church. Jonathan was living in Kilkenny
and was the son of Thomas Sparrow, a farmer. They were living in Kilkenny in
1901 and Jonathan was a farmer and publican. Jonathan died 27 Jun 1925 in
Kilkenny. Jane died 19 Mar 1943 and is buried in Deansgrange with her mother.
They had no issue.
2 Richard Poulton born circa 1863 joined the Royal Navy. He died a bachelor on
8 May 1880 at Mabbot Street aged 17 and is buried at Deansgrange.
3 John Poulton baptised 19 Sep 1864 at Donfanaghy, Co Donegal. He was a
commercial traveller living at Clonliffe Road and married Alice Collins on
9 Jan 1893 at St George’s Parish Church. Alice from Canada was living in Sarsfield
Street and was the daughter of Matthew Collins, a farmer. They were living on the
Merrion Road in 1911 and later at Park Avenue, Sandymount. John died
30 Aug 1931 and Alice died 10 Apr 1943. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 George Vincent Poulton born 26 Oct 1893 at 4 Richmond Street, Dublin.
He joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and served as a captain during WW1
with the 7th Battalion. He married Mabel M Adair at Havre, France after
the war.
2 Violet Alice Poulton born 27 Jul 1897 at North Strand, Dublin. She married
Norman Kavanagh on 27 Apr 1921at St John's Church Sandymount. Norman
was a civil servant and served with her brother George during WW1.
3 John Cecil Poulton born 18 Nov 1901 at St Brigid's Road, Dublin. He worked
as a superintendent of police with the Burma Frontier Services. He married
Mary Evelyn (Moya) Cleary on 6 Oct 1924 at the University Church on
Stephen's Green. Moya worked at the Special Surgical Hospital in Blackrock.
4 Lucy Poulton born 8 Jul 1867 at the Coast Guard Station, Kingstown living with her
mother in 1911. Lucy died unmarried on 20 Dec 1943 and is buried with her mother.
5 Mary Jane Poulton born 8 Nov 1869 at Clogherhead, Co Louth living with her mother
in 1911. Mary died unmarried on 27 Nov 1935 and is buried with her mother.
6 William Henry Poulton born 21 Feb 1873 at Malahide died 13 Nov 1880 aged 8 and
is buried at Deansgrange.
7 Samuel Charles Poulton born 5 May 1878 at Laytown, Co Meath died 15 Nov 1895
aged 16 and is buried at Deansgrange.
8 Joseph Arthur Poulton born circa 1881 at Lambay Island joined the Army Reserve
9th Lancers and was living with his mother in 1911. He died of wounds 29 Sep 1914
in France and is buried at Longueval Communal Cemetery. He is remembered on
the Carysfort Church Cross (installed at SS Philip and James in Booterstown after
Carysfort Church was demolished).
2 Joseph Poulton born circa 1830 son of Joseph Poulton, a labourer. He was a railway
policeman and married Isabella Gore on 4 May 1853 at Monkstown Church. Isabella from
Kingstown was the daughter of John Gore, a sexton. Joseph was a railway porter from 1857
to 1866. Joseph died 15 Oct 1894 at 6 George’s Place and is buried at Deansgrange.
Isabella died 18 Apr 1895 aged 70 at 6 George's Place and is buried with her husband.
1 John Poulton born circa 1856 in Blackrock. He was a plumber and died unmarried
on 1 Jun 1921 at 2A Main Street Blackrock. He is buried with his parents.
2 Margaret Maria Polton born 26 Apr 1857 at Blackrock baptised at Christchurch,
Carysfort. She married George Woods on 10 Jan 1882 at All Saints, Carysfort
Avenue. George was a prison official working at Richmond Prison and the son of
William Woods, a farmer. The were living in Blackrock in 1911 and all eight of
their children had survived.
3 Joseph Herbert Polton born 11 Mar 1859 baptised at Christchurch, Carysfort.
4 Henry Polton born 20 Mar 1861 at Blackrock, baptised at Christchurch, Carysfort.
He was a carpenter living at George’s Place, Blackrock and married Margaret
Morton on 12 Jun 1887 at SS Philip & James, Booterstown. Margaret from Cavan
was living at Summerville on Cross Avenue and was the daughter of Joseph
Morton a farmer. They were living at Avoca Avenue by 1911 and three of their
six children had survived. Henry died 27 Oct 1927 at 2 Avoca Place and is buried
at Deansgrange. Margaret died 4 Jan 1939 at Avoca Place and is buried with her
husband at Deansgrange.
1 Joseph Henry Poulton born 22 Apr 1892 at 5 Georges Place, Blackrock, Co
Dublin baptised at All Saints. He living with his parents in Blackrock in 1901.
He married Susan Jane Rowan on 25 Jul 1919 at Christ Church, Leeson Park.
Joseph a carpenter was living at 2 Avoca Place and was a carpenter. Susan
was living in Ranelagh and was the daughter of Henry Rowan, a bricklayer.
Susan died at the Hospice, Harold's Cross late of 12 Herbert Cottages on
7 Aug 1944 aged 52 and is buried at Mount Jerome. Joseph died on
1 Sep 1959 at Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital late of Ranelagh.
2 William Poulton born 13 May 1894 at Georges Place baptised at All Saints living
with his parents in Blackrock in 1911 and working as a plumber. He married
Ellen Partington in 1936 in Manchester. He was a retired contractor and died
at Monkstown Hospital late of 3 Avoca Place on 16 Dec 1964 and is buried at
Deansgrange. His son Henry Poulton the informant. Ellen died at St Michael’s
Hospital late of 3 Avoca Place on 23 Dec 1968 aged 57 and is buried with her
husband.
3 Emily Esther Poulton born 9 Dec 1896 at 8 Georges Place, Blackrock baptised
at All Saints died 26 Jul 1897 same place and is buried at Deansgrange.
4 John Thomas Poulton born circa 1898 died 5 Jan 1900 at 8 Georges Place is
buried at Deansgrange with his sister Emily.
5 Margaret Louisa Poulton born 19 Feb 1901 at 8 Georges Place baptised at All
Saints living with her parents in Blackrock in 1901 died 9 Oct 1904 at 2 Avoca
Place. She is buried with her brother and sister at Deansgrange.
6 Clara Mary Poulton born 26 Jan 1905 at 2 Avoca Place, Blackrock baptised at
All Saints living with her parents in Blackrock in 1911. She was living at 2 Avoca
Place and married James Holmes on 27 Mar 1937. James was a labourer living
at Harold's Cross and the son of M Holmes, a jeweller.
5 William Polton born 24 Apr 1863 at George’s Avenue, Blackrock baptised at
Christchurch, Carysfort. William, a plumber died unmarried on 19 Feb 1897
at 6 George’s Place and is buried with his parents.
6 Mary Poulton born 29 Jan 1866 at George’s Avenue, Blackrock baptised at
Christchurch, Carysfort. She was a national school teacher having trained at
Marlborough Street. She was principal at All Saints School Blackrock in 1905.
Mary died unmarried on 1 Jan 1930 at 2A Main Street, Blackrock and is buried
with her parents.
