James Pinkerton married Mary Anne Smyth eldest daughter of late John Smyth of Millbrook,
Londonderry in 1823. They lived at Belclare in Westport, Mayo. James Pinkerton and John
Thompson operated a large milling business there at the time of Griffits valuation in 1855.
in 1837 Lewis describes the factory ‘At Belclare is a cotton factory, in which are 26 looms,
affording employment to 30 men and a considerable number of women and children.
About two miles from the town are the bleach-green and linen and cotton-manufactory of
Messrs. Pinkerton and Thompson, in which are 24 power-looms, producing weekly 48 webs
of 52 yards each, and affording constant employment to 50, and when in full operation to
more than 200, men.’
James and his two daughters lived at Brookfield House from 1871.
1 James Pinkerton born circa 1827 died on 03.06.1870 aged 43 years at Westport.
2 William Pinkerton drowned on 04.10.1860 in Clew Bay having recently returned from
South America where he had accompanied a younger brother who was ill and who died
of consumption before their arrival.
3 Younger son Pinkerton died in South America circa 1860.
4 Sarah Pinkerton born circa 1827 eldest daughter died on 25.11.1845 aged 18 years
at the residence of her father in Westport.
5 Mary Anne Pinkerton born circa 1836 Westport, Mayo died unmarried on 13.08.1908
aged 72 years at Brookfield and is buried at Deansgrange. Probate to sister Catherine
6 Catherine Jane Pinkerton youngest daughter born circa 1839 Westport, Mayo died
unmarried on 19.09.1915 aged 76 years at Brookfield and is buried at Deansgrange.
