Matthew Phelan born circa 1848 son of Matthew Phelan, a farmer and his wife Alice of
Queen’s County. He married Elizabeth Kavanagh of Stillorgan Grove on 03.11.1874. Elizabeth
was the daughter of Laurence Kavanagh a steward of Stillorgan Grove and his wife Elizabeth.
Matthew was a gardener at Cherbury from 1873 until 1893 winning numerous prizes for the
Milner family. Elizabeth died on 04.01.1884 at Cherbury and is buried at Deansgrange*
Matthew, a widower secondly married Maria Keatley on 21.10.1885 at the Roman Catholic
Chapel in Booterstown. Maria was a servant and the daughter of William Keatley, a farmer of
Kildare and his wife Anna. They were living at Monkstown Road in 1901 and at Killeen Road in
Ranelagh by 1911. They had no children. Matthew died on 19.04.1923 at 11 Kileen Road
and Maria died on 13.11.1935 aged 74 at 11 Killeen Road. Informant Kathleen Kavanagh.
They are both buried at Deansgrange.
*They are buried with the Nolan family of Thomastown, Sallynoggin and Alice Phelan
(possibly a sister of Matthew).
