Edward Lovett Pearce
Edward Lovett Pearce son of Edward Pearce and Frances Lovett baptised 25 Jul 1695 at St Mary
the Virgin Church in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. He was a coronet in his father’s regiment
(Edward Pearce’s Dragoons) in 1714 and attained the rank of captain. He married his cousin
Anne Pearce, daughter of Thomas Pearce, governor of Londonderry, MP for Ludgershall and
governor of Limerick City.
According to Gilbert’s History of Dublin - In 1723 it was agreed that a new parliament house was
to be erected on the site of Chichester House and a sum of 6K was allocated and the plan selected
was that of Captain Edward Lovet Pearce, a captain in the regiment of Dragoons and MP for the
borough of Rathoath, Co Meath in 1727. Chichester house was demolished in 1728 and Arthur
Dobbs completed the parliament building in 1739 six years after Edward's death.
Captain Edward Lovet Pearce, the architect was at Dublin Castle on 3 Feb 1729 to meet the Lord
Justices and to lay the first stone (on top of a copper plate with an inscription and two medals
with effigies of King George and Queen Caroline) of the parliament House in Dublin. He was given
20 guineas to be distributed to the workmen to drink the health of their majesties, the Prince of
Wales and the rest of the Royal family. Lots of houses have been attributed to him however the
Grotto and Obelisk at Stillorgan are proven designs.
He was HM Engineer and Surveyor General of Ireland and was knighted by the Duke of Dorset
(Lionel Cranfield Sackville, 7th Earl of Dorset) in March 1732. In May 1733 he was of the four men
who each laid a cornerstone for the building of a new theatre in Longford Street, Dublin. The
site was reported to be on the very spot where once stood a stately monastery of the order of the
Greyfriars founded in 1271. Edward died 7 Dec 1733 at his house in Stillorgan and was buried at
Donnybrook graveyard. His will signed 28 Jun 1733 and the probate granted on 17 Apr 1734
mentions his sister Frances, wife Anne and his four daughters. Thomas Pearce, uncle and father in
law to Edward died in January 1739 at Stephen’s Green and was buried at Donnybrook and his will
mentions his daughter Lady Ann Pearce to whom he leaves £100 and he hopes that she will
understand the amount given, after what she had already received, and that if one of the
beneficiaries died before him then his grandchildren by Edward Lovet Pearce were to share that
bequest. Lady Pearce died 17 Jul 1749 at Stephen’s Green and was buried at Donnybrook. Her will
mentions her four married daughters and their children.
1 Anne Pearce (Pierce) of St Peters parish married Chambré Hallowes of St Paul’s Parish on
25 Jan 1747. Anne died before 1769 and no issue was found.
2 Frances Pearce married Benjamin Lake pre-1743.
3 Mary Pearce baptised in the parish of SS Peters & Kevins on 7 Apr 1729. She married Lewis
Thomas.
1 Henrietta Dorothea Thomas only daughter married Rev James Slator, JP of St Davids
Castle, Naas, Co Kildare and Toneyn Co Longford in 1780. James was the vicar of
Naas. James died in March 1830 aged 75 at St David’s Castle and Henrietta died a
widow on 16 Mar 1838 at Clare Street.
1 Mary Anne Slator born circa 1782 married Captain Charles Fagan of the Bengal
Army. She died a widow aged on 16 Jun 1859 at Chapel Street, Grosvenor
Place.
1 Elizabeth Harriet only daughter married George Fleming Franco, second
Judge of Merut, Bengal on 14 Jan 1824.
2 Elizabeth Slator married Rev Spencer William Walsh circa 1820. William
was the son of Rev John Revell Walsh and was chaplain to the marquesses
of Salisbury and Westmeath. He was appointed rector of Balsoon and
Athy, Co Meath in 1826. Elzabeth died at Moate on 23 Feb 1844. William
married again in 1855 and died 21 Jul 1880 aged 85 at Clonard.
1 Harriet Elizabeth Walsh born circa 1823 died at the Glebe House
Moate on 26 Apr 1832.
2 Euphemia Frances Elizabeth Walsh only surviving child born
23 Sep 1826 at St David’s Castle, Naas married Thomas Prendergast
Boles Walsh on 8 Jan 1853 at St Anne's Church, Dublin and they had
five children. Euphemia died at sea on 26 Mar 1862 onboard the Robert
Lowe.
1 Son Walsh born 1 Jan 1857 at sea on board the Robert Lowe on
passage to India.
3 Harriet Slator third daughter married Rev P M Cummings of Ballee, Co Down
on 7 May 1814 at St Thomas’ Church Dublin. She died on 25 Mar 1828 at
Brunswick Street, Bath.
1 James Slater Cummins born at Magheraclune House, Co
Monaghan on 5 Apr 1819 was with the 9th Foot. He died at the Kyber
Pass on 5 Apr 1842.
4 Jemima Slator fourth daughter married Harvey G P Tuckett on 10 Mar 1825
at Bareilly. He was with the 11the regiment of Light Dragoons.
5 Ellen (Eleanor) Slator born circa 1796 died 11 Jun 1886 at Ealing. Her death
notice gives her as kinswoman to the families of the late Marquis of
Landsdown (sic) and Lord Lake.
2 General Lewis Thomas born circa 1764. He married Marie Houghton
and they had at least five children. Lewis died in 1824 at Cawnpore,
East Indies.
4 Henrietta Pearce married Charles Willington before 1749. They both died in 1804.
1 Edward Pearce Willington born circa 1753 was with Twenty Sixth Regiment of Foot,
America.
2 Henrietta Pearce Willington married George Ball of Finglas in 1791.
1 Henry Moreland Ball born circa 1792. Of Kersiebank, Forenaughts, Kildare &
Kersiebank, Sterling in Scotland he married Elizabeth Jane Easton in 1824.
Elizabeth died 25 Feb 1858 and Henry died on 2 Nov 1858 at Kersiebank,
Scotland.
1 Jemima Ball daughter died 13 Jul 1829 at Kersiebank, Scotland.
2 Caroline Wilhelmina Ball died an infant at Kersiebank, Polmont on
28 Jul 1832.
3 Henrietta Elizabeth Ball second daughter married Theobald George
Samuel Wolfe of Forenaughts, Co Kildare on 18 Jun 1852 in Edinburgh.
1 George Wolfe son of Theobald born 16 Dec 1859, was educated at
TCD and RMC Sandhurst. He was a Lieutenant 8th (King’s Royal
Irish) Hussars, formerly 87th Princess Victoria’s Royal Irish Fusiliers.
He served in Egypt and was awarded medal, clasps and Khedive's
Star for the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He married Maud Smethurst, the
widow of Mr Leeman in 1888 and they had one child. George was
later a farmer, a High Sheriff, Ranger of the Curragh and Peace
Commissioner. Emily Maud Mary Wolfe died at the Metropole
Hotel in London on 5 Jun 1910. George was a TD for Co Kildare in
Dail Eireann (1923-32). He retired in 1890 and died on 1 Dec 1941.
1 Emily Maud Charlotte Wolfe born 27 Feb 1892 died a spinster
at Forenaughts on 28 Apr 1980 and was buried with her parents
at St John's, Ballymore Eustace.
