John Palmer born circa 1799 in Waterford son of Henry Palmer, a teacher graduated Trinity
and worked as a college professor and editor of an anti-slavery newspaper in England. He
married Jane Gordon, Jane was the daughter of Alexander Gordon, a wine merchant of The
Straight, Dudley and his wife Maria Loxton from Wolverhampton. He was appointed HM
Colonial treasure of Dominica in 1852. His only daughters died within days of each other in
Dominica in 1853 as did is sister Mary Anne. He retired in 1867 due to ill health and died
at The Mall, London on 8 Mar 1869. His body was repatriated and he was buried at his
home town of Killoteran, Butlerstown, Co Waterford where his brother James was a local
MD. Jane was living with her son Henry in 1901 and with Mary Beatrice Swanton, a
suffrage supporter and vendor of the ‘Votes for Women’ newspaper in 1911. She died at
Cowper gardens, Rathgar on 20 May 1914.
1 Henry Gordon Palmer third son born circa 1838 in Dudley, England. He was with
the Royal artillery and retired in 1870. He married widow, Eliza Cromartie on
9 Sep 1871 at St Edmund’s Church, Dudley, Worcester. Eliza was the youngest
daughter of the late Avary Jordan of Racecourse House, Cashel and the widow of
Captain F Cromartie of the Royal Artillery, in Barbados. She had, three children; a
daughter Amy who died in 1870, Mary Cromartie who married William Stephens
and moved to Perth and Ernest who was living with his paternal grandfather in
1871.
Henry took Holy orders in 1880 and was a curate of Ferns in 1881. He was rector
of Hollyfort, Gorey in 1886 and of Kilnahue parish in Co Wexford when he retired.
He died at Cliff Terrace, Tramore, Co Waterford on 29 May 1903. Eliza and her
children were at Beechwood in Ranelagh by 1906. Eliza died aged 90 at
Mountainview Road, Rathmines on 20 Feb 1932.
1 Avary Gordon Palmer eldest son born 15 Oct 1873 in Kensington, London
baptised 1 Feb 184. He was a bank clerk and identified as a Theosophist in
1911. He married Charlotte Josephine Boyd on 15 May 1912 at Sandford
Church. Charlotte was the daughter of the late Capt John Wilson Boyd of
Dollymount. They both gave their address at Beechwood Avenue,
Ranelagh. Avary was hon sec of the Anti-Vaccination League from 1907 to
1913 and was also active in the anti- vivisection movement. He was a founder
member of the Irish Bank Officials Association in 1918. He was later
registrar of the National Bank. He died on 21 Mar 1965 at Ripley,
Springfield Park, Foxrock. His funeral service was held at St Brigid’s,
Stillorgan and he was buried in the adjoining graveyard. He was survived by
five of his children; Alan, Geoffrey, Joy, Deborah and Cecilia. Charlotte was
buried with her husband.

2 Olive Palmer born 13 Dec 1875 at Cashel married Ernest Alexander
Bannister on 28 Jun 1910 at the Unitarian Church on Stephen’s Green.
Edward was a garage owner and the son of George Winslow Bannister of
Cowper Gardens. Olive was a restaurateur and ran the short lived Café
Ideal at Westland Row. It was a vegetarian restaurant and also the
headquarters of “The New Club” and the ‘Anti Vaccination League’ of
which Olive was treasurer and Ernest was secretary. It also hosted groups
like the Vegetarian Cycling Club run by R J Mecredy and the Vegetarian
Society. They were living in Scotland by 1926.

4 Richard James Weldon Palmer youngest son born circa 1884 in Co Wexford.
He attended Kilnehue national School. He identified as a Theosophist in 1911.
He married Marguerite Blanche Bannister on 5 Sep 1910 at the Unitarian
Church on Stephen’s Green. Marguerite was a secretary and the daughter of
the late Rev George Winslow Bannister, principal of Greenheys High School in
Manchester and his wife Anna Gaillard. By 1911 Weldon was working as a
clerk in a wholesale rubber tyre Company and by 1914 a commercial traveller.
Marguerite was a suffragette and a member of the IWFL. She was arrested in
1911 in London and in 1912 for breaking windows in Dublin Castle. She was
sentenced to 6 weeks in Mountjoy in 1913. She was transferred to Tullamore
Gaol and went on hunger strike. She was released 4 days later under the 'Cat
and Mouse' Act. Richard died in 1968 at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital late of
Eventide Cottage, Kilpedder, his wife E Palmer the informant. Eileen Palmer
died at Eventide Cottage, Kilpedder on 24 Nov 1978.
1 Joan Deborah Gordon Gaillard Palmer born 21 Aug 1914 at Leeson Park.
She was living at Baggot Street and married George Freeman on
11 Feb 1938 at Dublin Registrar’s office. George was the son of Percival
Freeman.
2 Roger Weldon Palmer born 10 Dec 1918 at Charleston Avenue,
Rathmines.
5 John Adnah Jordan Palmer born 5 Apr 1883 in Horetown, Wexford. He was a
civil servant and married Beatrice Una Wilkins on 29 Jun 1912 at Zion Church
and they lived in Summerville Park, Rathmines. Beatrice was the only daughter
of William Wilkins of Rostrevor Terrace, Rathgar, late headmaster of High School.
John died 22 Dec 1951 at Greystones and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Edgar Avary Jordan Palmer born 22 June 1915 at Summerville Park,
Rathmines. He died at bachelor at Rathmines on 9 Jan 1949 and was
buried at Mount Jerome.
