O’Loghlen of Booterstown House
Bryan O’Loghlen born 27 Jun 1828 at Rutland Street, Dublin second surviving son of Michael
O’Loghlen master of the Rolls, 1st Baronet, who in 1836 became the first Roman Catholic to
occupy a seat on the bench since 1688, and his wife Bidelia Kelly. He was educated at St Mary’s
College Oscott, graduated Trinity and admitted Kings Inns. He was called to the Irish bar in 1856.
In 1862 he emigrated to Australia and was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in 1863. He married
Ella Seward on 17 Sep 1863 at Heidelberg, near Melbourne. Ella was the third daughter of
James Mackay Seward of Somerset Park, Preston, Melbourne. He succeeded to the baronetcy in
1877 on the death of his brother, Colman, and in the same year he was elected, in absentia, to
the British House of Commons for County Clare, replacing his brother, but did not take his s
seat. He was Premier of the State of Victoria, Australia, from 1881 to 1883. He died aged 77 on
31 Oct 1905 at 50 Barkly street, St Kilda and was buried at St Kilda Cemetery. He was succeeded
in the barony by his eldest son, Michael. Ella died 9 Jun 1919 at South Yarra.
1 Annie Bidelia (Mary) O’Loghlen born 28 Dec 1864 in Australia married Leo Michael Cecil
Angelo Joseph Aloysius Hernandez de Mulardo on 11 Jun 1910 at St James’, Spanish
Place. Leo was bankrupt and arrested in his honeymoon and was in court in 1910 and they
were living at Nutfield, Co Clare in 1911.
2 Michael O’Loghlen born 16 Oct 1866 eldest son and second child at St Kilda, Port Phillip
City, Victoria, Australia. He was High Sheriff for Co Clare in 1900, and 1910. He was His
Majesty's Lord Lieutenant for Co Clare from 1910 to 1922. He was living at Drumconora,
Co Clare and married Beatrice Mary Murphy on 16 Jan 1918 at Holy Cross Church,
Dundrum. The reception was held at Wyckham. Beatrice was the only daughter of Sir
Michael Murphy of Wyckham, Dundrum. She was a VAD working at Mercer’s Hospital and
a member of Dundrum Red Cross. They lived at Booterstown House from 1930 and moved
from Booterstown House in November 1932 to live at Altan Grange, Foxrock. They enjoyed
horse racing and were regulars at the Phoenix Park and Leopardstown. The also went to
France at Christmas to watch the racing on the Riviera. Beatrice was a renowned as a great
hostess, public speaker and storyteller. She was on the committee of the Children’s Sunshine
Home. She was president of the Foxrock and Stillorgan District Jubilee Nursing Association
and was president of the Queens Institute of District Nursing in 1951. Sir Michael fourth
Baronet of Drumconora, Co Clare died 23 Mar 1934 at Altan Grange and was buried at
Deansgrange. He died left 11k in personal estate and was succeeded by his brother Charles.
Beatrice travelled to Australia in 1936 to visit her husband’s family. She died 5 Feb 1953 aged
75 at Altan Grange, Westminster Road and was buried at Deansgrange. She left 169k in
personal estate. Her car and £500 was left to her chauffeur Joseph Ruddock. She also left 2K
to charity. The couple had no children.
3 Lucy Susan Mary (Cissie) born 11 Jul 1868 died unmarried on 30 Jul 1943 at Walsh Street,
South Yarra.
4 Coleman Seward O’Loghlen born 15 Dec 1869 died unmarried on 29 Oct 1909 and was buried at
St Kilda’s.
5 Hugh Ross Windsor O’Loghlen born 18 Feb 1872 died 21 Sep 1872.
6 Ella Maude O’Loghlen born 7 May 1874 married George Herbert Williams in 1923 at Melbourne.
George a barrister was the second son of the late Sir Hartley Williams, Cadogan Gardens, London
West. Ella died on 5 Nov 1960.
7 Bryan James O’Loghlen born 20 Jan 1875. He married Violet Elizabeth Amelia Grant, daughter
of Daniel Grant, on 2 Jun 1909. Bryan died on 26 June 1920 at age 45 and was buried at St Kilda’s.
8 Frances Mary O’Loghlen born 20 Apr 1876 became a nun. She entered a convent in Ballarat in
1900.
9 Charles Hugh Ross O’Loghlen born 6 Jul 1881 succeeded his brother as 5th Baronet.
10 Henry Ross O’Loghlen born 29 Nov 1886. He married Doris Irene Horne, daughter of Major
Percival Horne, in January 1912. He died on 22 Jul 1944.
11 Clare Mary O’Loghlen born 10 Feb 1889. She died unmarried on 25 Sep 1968.
12 Aimee Margaret Julia O’Loghlen born 26 May 1891. She died unmarried on 28 July 1954.
