Patrick Mahon of Snugville was known as Pedraigruadth Mac Mathghambhna or Pahdraic
Mor or The Mahon. He married Barbara O’Gorman in February 1798. Barbara was the
daughter of the late John and Suzanna O’Gorman of Ennis. Patrick participated in the
Rebellion of 1798. He of New Park Ennis by 1810 and was a merchant and a member of the
Catholic Association. He died circa July 1822 and Barbara died at New Park, Ennis on
17 Apr 1825.
1 James Patrick Mahon eldest son born circa 1803 at Ennis, Co Clare. He was
educated at Clongowes Wood and Trinity College and was described as being 6’5,
very erect and very handsome. He was called to the bar but never practiced. His
antics first came to public attention in 1828 at Ennis courthouse, when he nominated
Daniel O’Connell as an MP for Clare. He sat astride the balcony wearing a green sash
and when asked to identify himself he said I’m ‘The O’Gorman Mahon’. In response
to the question by the sheriff ‘are you Mister O’Gorman Mahon, he replied no I’m the
O’Gorman Mahon and only three living people are entitled to be called ‘The’ The Pope
the Devil and The O’Gorman Mahon. He married Christina Marie O’Brien on
12 May 1830 at 12 Fitzwilliam Square. She was the daughter and co-heiress of her
late father Michael O’Brien of 12 Fitzwilliam Square and Lota, Booterstown. They were
married by the Most Rev Dr Daniel Murray, Archbishop of Dublin and they
honeymooned in England. It was speculated that her dowry and share in her father’s
estate was about 50k. After their marriage Lota was leased out by the year and only
sometimes used by them. He quarrelled with O’Connell in 1829 and ran for election
himself in 1831. He won but was unseated by petition over allegations of bribery,
amidst rumours of using his wife’s dowry to finance same. He was a politician, an
adventurer, a mercenary who travelled the world leaving his wife living in Paris. He
lived in various countries including South America and Russia. He was aide de camp
to the president of Costa Rico and international bodyguard to the Tzar. He returned to
Paris in 1866 and was appointed a colonel in a regiment of chasseurs à cheval by
Napoleon III but was in Prussia by 1870. James Patrick is reputed to have been a crack
shot with a pistol and to have fought eighteen duels during his lifetime. Christina died
20 Oct 1877 at Seine-et-Oisem, Paris having lived through the Siege of Paris. He
returned to politics in 1887 as MP for Carlow and died on 21 Jun 1891 in Chelsea. He left
£702 in personal estate and is buried at Glasnevin.

2 Catherine Mary O’Brien baptised 25 Jan 1837 at St Andrews Church, Dublin.
3 St John O’Gorman Mahon born as son and heir on 12 Jun 1838 at 12
Montpelier Parade was baptised at Booterstown on 24 Jun 1838. He converted
to Protestantism in 1860 and died 22 Sep 1883 in Paris.
2 Charles George Mahon born circa 1807. He was of New Park, Ennis when he
married Matilda Comyn in April 1827 at Hollywell, Co Clare. Matilda was the second
daughter of the late George Comyn of Hollywell. He died 14 Feb 1833 at Fitzwilliam
Square, Dublin, the residence of his brother The O’Gorman Mahon.
1 Charles Patrick Mahon born June 1829 at New Park, Ennis. Daniel O’Connell
was sponsor at his baptism. He married Elizabeth Hagan on 26 Apr 1865 in St
Stephen’s Church, Dublin. Elizabeth was the co heiress and youngest daughter
of Sir Robert Hagan of Pembroke Road, knight and a rear Admiral in the Royal
Navy and Isabella Maria Hall. As only son he was granted the use of the
additional surname of Hagan and to bear the arms of Hagan and Mahon
quarterly.
3 Susanna Mahon born circa 1807 was bequeathed 3.5k under the will of her father.
She applied to the courts in 1836 to have a receiver appointed to the estates at New
Park as she was not receiving the interest regularly and upwards of 500l was due,
exclusive of the 3250L principal. She was unmarried in 1851 and lived in Paris.
4 William Richard Mahon born circa 1808. He was of New Park and appointed a
magistrate in 1836. He died at Montpelier the residence of his brother The
O’Gorman Mahon in July 1838.
