Matthew O'Farrell born circa 1813 was a soap maker and tobacconist of North King Street and
Queen Street. Matthew a merchant of North King Street married Anna Boland on 02.07.1850 at
the Pro Cathedral. Witness Eliza Boland and Patrick Lawler. Anna was the daughter of Patrick
Boland a baker of Capel Street. They lived at Homestead from 1864 to 1867 and at Manor House,
Dundrum (later named Coolgreany and Taney Manor) from 1868. Matthew died 07.04.1879 at
Manor House the informant Andrew Corcoran. He left 60k in personal estate and was buried at
Glasnevin. Anne and the children continued to live at Manor House until 1883. Anne died
02.02.1898 aged 68 at Cambridge House, Dalkey and was buried at Glasnevin. The Great West
Window at Holy Cross Church, Dundrum was dedicated to the memory of Matthew and Anne.
1 Mary Christina O’Farrell eldest child born circa 1853 and died on 09.04.1856 aged 3 years
at Eblana, North Circular Road and buried at Glasnevin.
2 Julia Teresa O’Farrell eldest daughter born circa 1856 married John Thomas O’Connor of
Dundrum on 22.08.1876 at the Church of the Assumption, Booterstown. The family lived
at Kildare Street in 1901 and Simonscourt in 1911.
1 John Charles O’Connor born 10.08.1877 at 145 Leinster Road, Rathmines. Charles a
solicitor of 61 Ailesbury Road married Ellen Mary Robinson daughter of John
Robinson of 7 Upper Sherrard Street on 21.07.1915 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin.
Ellen died on 04.05.1927 aged 41 years at St Patricks Hospital and Charles died on
17.07.1941 aged 63 years at the Hospice in Harold's Cross both late of St John’s,
Dalkey and they are buried at Deansgrange.
2 Helen Mary Catherine O’Connor born 26.08.1878 at 145 Leinster Road. Helen died
on 06.09.1971 aged 96 years at Our Lady’s Manor, Dalkey late of St John’s Ardevin
Avenue, Dalkey and is buried at Glasnevin.
3 Alfred Owen O’Connor born 03.06.1880 at 145 Leinster Road, Rathmines. Alfred who
was almost blind in the 1901 Census died of pulmonary tuberculosis on 06.01.1902
aged 20 years at 23 Merrion Street and is buried at Glasnevin.
4 Catherine Mary O’Connor born 15.09.1881 at 43 Ailesbury Road.
5 Norbert Matthew P O’Connor born 06.06.1888 at 23 Kildare Street. Norbert an
engineer of 4 New Brighton, Monkstown married Isabel G Harte-Barry daughter of
Charles M Harte-Barry on 27.07.1921 at the Roman Catholic Church of Kanturk.
6 Roderick (Rory) O’Connor born 28.11.1883 at 23 Kildare Street. Rory O’Connor
was executed in Mountjoy Gaol by the Irish Government along with Liam
Mellowes, Joseph McKelvey and Richard Barrett on 8th December 1922 for the
murder of Brigadier Sean Hales and the wounding of Deputy Patrick O’Maille on
their way to attend the Dail.
3 Patrick A O’Farrell eldest son born circa 1859 married Katie Fitzpatrick 3rd daughter of
Samuel Foley Fitzpatrick of Wood Park, Clontarf on 18.02.1879 at the Roman Catholic
Chapel, Clontarf. Patrick was living at 9 Rostrevor Terrace, Rathgar in 1879.
4 Matthew Mary O’Farrell infant child died on 01.12.1864 at Homestead, Dundrum
5 John Mary Joseph O’Farrell baptised 03.05.1870 at Dundrum. John a solicitor of Dalkey
married Sarah Kerley daughter of Michael Kerley of Kilcurry on 21.02.1898 at the Roman
Catholic Chapel of Brid a Crinn, Dundalk. It seems that John and Sarah went to live in
Sydney, New South Wales shortly after their marriage.
