Lady O'Donel O'Hara
John Blake born circa 1753 son of Sir Walter Blake of Menlo Castle married Rose Brice as his
second wife in July 1801 at Mountjoy Square (the residence of Lord Ventry). Rose was the
daughter of Edward Brice of Kilrout House, Co Antrim. Lady Blake died on 14 Apr 1833 at
Fitzwilliam Street, the home of her son in law Lord Ventry. Sir John died aged 81 on
5 May 1834 at Menlo Castle, Co Galway.
1 Eliza Theodora Blake born circa 1802 married Thomas Townsend Aremberg de
Moleyns, 3rd Baron Ventry on 18 Aug 1821. Eliza died 25 Oct 1879 at Blennerville.
2 Jane Blake born circa 1805 married Rev Denis Mahony of Dromore in September 1829
at Burnham House, Kerry (the seat of Lord Ventry). Jane died on 9 Mar 1843 having
been delivered of a premature baby.
3 Arabella Blake born 28 May 1807. She married Sir Hugh James Moore O’Donel on
1 Dec 1827 at the Dublin residence of her brother in law Lord Ventry. Sir Hugh was of
Newport House and estate in Co Mayo and was the son of Sir Neal O'Donnell and Lady
Catherine Annesley. He owned 60 miles of the coastline of Mayo. The couple were
not on good term and Arabella went to stay with her mother. The newspapers
reported that Sir Hugh had tried to take his own life and had shot himself in the chest.
This was later retracted and they printed that his wounds were not self inflicted but had
been caused in a shooting accident. Lady Arabella and her mother left Menlo to go to
Newport House, stopping in Castlebar they were dissuaded from travelling further until
there was a change in Sir Hugh’s condition. Hugh died 29 Jul 1828 from his wounds.
The Newport estate passed to his brother Richard in November 1828 when the baby
born posthumously was female.

27 Apr 1889 at 17 Longford Terrace, Monkstown and is buried at Deansgrange.
Arabella secondly married John O’Hara of Raheen, Co Galway at St Thomas’ Church,
Dublin in June 1829. John was a JP, treasurer of the County Galway and a director of the
Belfast and Galway, and Irish Midland Great Western Railways. John died 22 Feb 1849 in
Dublin. Arabella lived at Lota from 1858 to 1860 and she and her daughter Rose attended
the Viceregal Court on a number of occasions. She was at Merrion Square in 1867 and
moved to Longford Terrace in 1869. Arabella died 13 Oct 1884 at 17 Longford Terrace,
Monkstown and is buried at Deansgrange.
1 Frances Anne (Fanny) O’Hara eldest daughter born 28 Apr 1830 married William
Wallace Hozier on 1 Aug 1849 at Ardbracan Church. William was with the Scots
Greys and the son of James Hozier, of Mauldslie Castle and Newlands, Lanarkshire,
and Catherine Margaret Feilden. Lady Hozier died at Mauldslie Castle in January 1891.
He was made 1st Baron Newlands in 1898. William died 30 Jan 1906 and left
£1,504,278 in personal estate.
1 James Henry Cecil Hozier was born 4 Apr 1851 in Scotland. He was a MP was
with the foreign service in 1876. He married Mary Louisa Wellerby Cecil in 1880
and died in 1929 at Steyning, Sussex.
2 Arabella Rose Hozier born 5 Mar 1855 in Ireland married William James Gardiner
Baird and died in 1916.
3 Catherine Rose Hozier born circa 1860 in Ireland, a spinster living with her father
in 1901. She received over 50k on the death of her father. She married William
Algernon Cajetan Law in 1912. She died in 1930 and left 57k in personal estate.
4 Mary Haughton (May) Hozier born circa 1870 married Lord Lamington (Charles
Wallace Alexander Napier Cochrane-Baillie) on 13 Jun 1895 at St Michael’s Church,
Pimlico. Lord Lamington was Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901.
Charles died 16 Sep 1940.
2 Rose O’Hara youngest daughter born circa 1833. She was resident at Lota House and
married William Forbes of Callendar, Scotland on 23 Jun 1859 at Booterstown Church.
William was the son of William Forbes, MP for Stirlingshire and Lady Louisa Antoinette
Wemyss-Charteris. William was master of the Kildare Hunt, bred horses and the
National steward of the Punchestown Steeplechases. Rose died in 29 Jan 1866 at Ely
Place, Dublin. William remarried in 1868.
1 William Francis Forbes born 22 Oct 1860 in Edinburgh died in 1880.
2 John Francis Forbes born 30 May 1862 in Edinburgh died in 1883.
3 Robert Patrick O’Hara only son born 17 Mar 1836 at Fitzwilliam Place. He graduated
Cain’s College, Cambridge and was called to the Irish bar in 1860. He married
Frances Mary Cockburne (Fanny) Power on 4 Oct 1865 at Kilfane Church, Co
Kilkenny. Fanny was the daughter of Colonel Gervaise Power and the niece of Sir
John Power of Kilfane. Fanny was a Irish society beauty and was known by the
soubriquet ‘Power of Love’. Robert died in the arms of his wife on 21 Sep 1885 at
Ostend late of Durham House, Chelsea survived by his wife and one daughter.
4 John Brice Blake born circa 1811. John was a captain in the 42nd Regiment when he
married Frances McIlree on 1 Jul 1840 at St George’s Church, Dublin. Frances was
the daughter of John Drope McIlree of Belturbet, Co Cavan. John died 9 Mar 1858 at
Doon House, Oughterard.
