John O’Carroll of Ardagh, Co Galway married Anne Locke on 14 Jul 1803 at the Pro Cathedral.
Anne was the daughter of the John Locke and Miss Lynch. Her father died in 1807 and Anne
and her sister Lucy (Mrs John Deane Skerrett) became co-heiresses to their brother Peter
Warren Locke of Athgoe who had no legitimate children. Anne and her sister inherited on
the death of their brother on 7 Dec 1833 but subsequently a will was found by her son
Redmond which changed their lives. Peter Locke had left all his estates to his two illegitimate
children. The Athgoe estate was not affected by the will and it remained with her sister Lucy.
However all his other property was left to his daughter Miss Locke and Anne, a widow was left
with no means. Anne moved to live with her daughter Madeline in Skahard and died
21 Jun 1853.
1 Redmond Peter O’Carroll born circa 1805 educated at Stoneyhurst was a barrister of 51
Great Charles Street. He married Mary Catherine Goold on 26 Jul 1835 at Lucan. Mary
was the eldest daughter of Michael Francis Gould of Goold’s Hill, Cork and the niece of Sir
George Goold, Bart of Old Court, Co Cork. Redmond was law advisor to the board of
National Education and secretary to the board of Charitable Bequests. He was also agent
for the Locke estate at Athgoe. Mary was a Governess of the Magdalen Asylum of
Marlborough Street. Redmond died from typhus fever on 8 Oct 1847 at Bray and his wife
Mary was granted administration. Mary took a job as a matron of Grangegorman. Mary
died on 5 Jun 1877 at 2 Nelson Street aged 74. Her executor was her son Rev Francis
O’Carroll of the Oratory, Brompton.
1 John James O’Carroll born 1 Sep 1837 at Great Charles Street educated at Clongowes
Wood. He entered the Jesuit order in 1853. A talented linguist; master of fourteen
languages, could converse in a further eight and taught all over the Europe. He died
5 Mar 1889 at Catholic University Dublin late of Avondale, Avoca Avenue.
2 Francis Augustine O’Carroll second son born 3 Sep 1839 at Great Charles Street was
educated at Clongowes Wood and admitted Kings Inns in 1864. He later became a
priest and died on 27 Nov 1886 at the Brompton Oratory, Middlesex.
2 Frederick Francis O’Carroll born circa 1809. He married Catherine (Kate) McCarthy in June
1841. Kate was the only daughter of Joseph McCarthy of Trim, Co Meath and his wife Susan
Dowell. Kate died at Belvidere Place Dublin on 5 Feb 1865. Frederick was living at Avondale
in 1868 and was Inspector of National Schools. Frederick died 17 Apr 1889 at 67 Leeson
Street and was buried at Glasnevin.
1 Frederick John Joseph Locke O’Carroll only son born 27 Jan 1843 baptised at the Pro
Cathedral. He graduated Trinity and was admitted to the bar in 1868. He was living
at Avondale, Avoca Avenue and married Margaret Thompson on 29 Apr 1874 at St
Andrew’s Church, Westland Row. Margaret was living at 22 Merrion Square North
and the daughter of William Thompson of Clare Hall, Raheny and his wife Anna Maria
MacLornan. He was appointed secretary to the Lord Chancellor John Naish, is cousin
in 1885. He was living at Athgoe Park by 1890 and with architect William H Byrne
drew up plans to extend it in 1891. He was appointed commissioner of Peace for
Dublin in 1893. Margaret was living at Jessamine Villa, Abergele, Rhyl, St Asaph,
Flintshire with five of her children in 1901. They were living at Courtnaboghilla,
Kilkenny in 1911 and eight of their ten children had survived. Frederick died
21 Feb 1922 at Athgoe Park and was buried at Glasnevin. Margaret died 17 Feb 1927
at Leeson Street, her daughter Margaret the informant.
1 Frederick William Joseph (Joe) O’Carroll born 13 Apr 1876 at 67 Lower Leeson
Street. He was educated at Baylis House School, Stoke Poges. He was a major
in the 5th Royal Dublin Fusiliers and married Sylvia William in 1917 at Cardiff.
He died 6 Oct 1947 at 16 Craven Hill Garden, London.
2 John Augustine McCarthy O’Carroll born 28 Aug 1877 at 67 Lower Leeson Street.
He was educated at Baylis House School, Stoke Poges and St Patrick’s Thurles.
He served during WW1 and died 7 Dec 1963 in England.
3 Annie Kathleen O’Carroll born 2 Dec 1878 baptised Westland Row died in 1880
at Warren Lodge Sutton and was buried at Glasnevin.
4 Margaret Mary Frances (Daisy) O’Carroll born 19 Feb 1880 at 67 Leeson Street
living with her father at Courtnaboghilla, Kilkenny in 1911. She died unmarried
after an operation at the Richmond Hospital late of Athgoe Park in 1930.
5 William Thomas O’Carroll born 4 Dec 1881 at 67 Lower Leeson Street baptised at
St Andrews, Westland Row. He enlisted with the Imperial Yeomanry in 1900 and
was posted to South Africa. He later served with South African Constabulary. He
served with the Canadian Expeditionary, New Zealand Expeditionary during WW1.
6 Oscar Francis O’Carroll born 27 May 1888 at 67 Lower Leeson Street living with
his father at Courtnaboghilla, Kilkenny in 1911. He served with the Royal Army
Ordnance Corps during WW1. He married Dorothy M Shoesmith in 1921. He was
a tennis pro and lived at Westlands Sports Ground Wedgwood Avenue, Newcastle
-Under-Lyme. He died in Sussex in 1972.
7 Cathleen Eily (Kathleen) O’Carroll born 8 Feb 1891 at 67 Leeson Street living with
her family in Kilkenny in 1911. Kathleen was unmarried and in later life she lived
in various houses around Greystones. She moved into Evans Cottage on Church
Road on the 26 Nov 1962 and met with an accident a few hours later on the main
road and died at Louglinstown Hospital. She was buried at Glasnevin.
8 Walter Cormac Locke O’Carroll born 14 Sep 1893 at Athgoe living with his father
at Courtnaboghilla, Kilkenny in 1911. Walter served during WW1 and was with
the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment. He married Ethel Dorothea Kelly at
Farnborough in December 1919. Ethel was the only daughter of Surgeon General
W Pierce Kelly. He was a Major with the 4 Royal Tank Regiment in WW2. Walter
died 8 Apr 1957 in Dorset.
9 Violet Mary O’Carroll born 1898 living with her father at Courtnaboghilla,
Kilkenny in 1911. Violet of Athgoe Park married Francis Lyons on 3 Nov 1917 at
University Church, Dublin. Francis was a civil servant and the son Daniel Lyons,
a timber merchant.
3 Madeline Cecilia O’Carroll eldest daughter born circa 1811 married Edmund Dowell on
1 Aug 1844. Edmund was a JP of Skahard House, Co Galway and died 1 Jan 1871 aged
66. Madeline died a widow on 9 Dec 1881 age 71 at Grosvenor place, the residence of
her brother Frederick late of Avondale, Avoca Avenue.
4 Anna Margaret O’Carroll youngest daughter born circa 1814 married Caroll Naish on
15 Sep 1840. Caroll was of Ballycullen, Co Limerick. The wedding took places at the
residence of her brother Redmond and was registered at the Pro Cathedral. Anna
died at 5 Fitzgibbon Street on 24 Dec 1884.
1 John Naish born circa 1841. He was attorney general for Ireland and later Lord
Chancellor. He died in 1890.
