Arthur Newcomen born circa 1787 son of Thomas Newenham (who died 1798) married
Catherine Hunter in 1811. His brother Thomas inherited the estate of Clogher and
Calistown from his father and Arthur inherited them on the death of his brother in 1839.
The estate included a valuable fishery off the shores which Arthur transferred to his
daughter Sophia Jane in 1859. She surrendered the land back to her father in 1865 in
exchange for lands at Calistown. Catherine died 1 Dec 1865 at Tuam. Arthur’s sister
Frances died 6 Oct 1863 and his last surviving sister Jane died at Shankhill House,
Loughlinstown in 1877. Arthur of Calistown, Co Louth and Sutton, Howth Dublin died
3 May 1883 at Calistown and was interred at Clogher.
1 Thomas Arthur Newcomen eldest son born circa 1813 was privately taught and
admitted Kings Inns in 1841. He died 17 Mar 1867 at Calistown Lodge. He left
£600 in personal estate, his father his only next of kin was his executor.
2 John Frederick Augustus Newcomen second son born circa 1814 died a bachelor
on 26 Feb 1888 at Idrone Terrace, Blackrock, Co Dublin. His nephew Arthur
Newcomen the informant. He left 5K in personal estate and his executors were
sister Jane and brother Robert of Clogherhead.
3 Alexander Stewart Newcomen third son born circa 1816. He married Isabella Grace
Toler on 17 Sep 1862 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Isabella was resident at
Heytesbury Street and was the daughter of the Rev John Toler of Kentstown Glebe,
Co Meath. Alexander had a house at Clogher Head and 47 acres were his sister
Jane lived and his sister in law Leticia Toler also lived. They lived at Weston house,
Dundrum from 1883 to 1886. Alexander sold off the 171 acres at Sutton in 1893.
Isabella died on 18 Jan 1896 at Rockfield, Dundrum. No issue found.
Alexander secondly married the widow Anne Jane Raynal 13 Jul 1897 at the registrar’s
office in Dublin. Both were resident at Rosetta Cottage, Kilmainham Lane. Anna Jane
was the daughter of Thomas Battersby, head clerk at TCD. Anna was 33 years his
junior and had two children from her previous marriage. Alexander died on
19 Nov 1903 at Landore, Dodder Road and left £739 in personal estate.
4 Son Newcomen died in Saratoga on 12 Aug 1878.
5 William Warner Westerna Newcomen born circa 1821. He was living at Tuam and
married Matilda Egan on 26 May 1846 at St Mary’s, Tuam. Matilda was the daughter
of the late Patrick Egan, solicitor. They moved to Australia circa 1852 and had at least
three more children. In 1853 it was reported that William had found a piece of gold
weighing 10lbs. William worked for Messes Watson & Hewitt before purchasing his
own sheep station. Matilda died circa 1900 and William died in April 1908 at
Glenrowan, Melbourne. He was survived by two sons and four daughters, his eldest
son Dr Arthur Newcomen of Manchester, England inheriting his property.
1 Emily Newcomen born 19 Feb 1847 at Belville, Tuam. She married Malcolm
Morison of Ballarat on 28 Aug 1863.
2 Son Newcomen born 2 Jun 1848 at Tuam.
3 Mary Jane Newcomen second daughter born circa 1849 in Tuam married
John Clarke on 29 Dec 1867 at Malvern in Melbourne. John was the only son
of David Clarke of Piggotreet Station.
6 Robert Newcomen born circa 1822 was a farmer living with his sister Jane in 1901.
He died a bachelor at Calistown on 15 Feb 1907 and left 20K in personal estate.
7 Jane Sophia Newcomen born circa 1827 was a farmer living with her brother in 1901.
She died a spinster at Waterloo Road, late of Calistown House, Clogher on 29 Dec 1905
and left 13K in personal estate.
