Laurence Neill Donovan formerly known and stiled (sic) John Neil, merchant of Madras in the
West Indies now known and stiled Lawrence Neil Donovan of Stephen’s Green married Jane
Singer by ML of 16 Jun 1808. Jane was the second eldest daughter of James Singer of
Annadale in Co Dublin and her marriage settlement was 4k. He was a Church warden of St
George’s in 1813 and they lived at 2 Mountjoy Square from 1813 to 1827. Their country house
was Janeville in Roebuck from 1812. Laurence was the owner of Belmont House from 1814 and
put Belmont House up for sale in 1832. Laurence formerly of the East Indies and Dublin died on
10 Sep 1839 in Jersey and was buried at St Helier, Jersey. Isabella Jane relict of L Neill Donovan,
sister of the Bishop of Meath died 4 Oct 1865.
1 Elizabeth Singer (Eliza) Donovan eldest daughter born 8 Jul 1809 baptised at St George's,
Dublin on 13 Aug 1809. She married Edward Badham Thornhill in October 1827.
Edward was of Castle Kiven, Co Cork and the son of Henry Thornhill. They had at least
ten children. Edward died 27 Jun 1881 at Rathgar. Elizabeth a widow living at Marlboro
Road, Dublin in 1883. Elizabeth died at 9 Cullenswood Terrace on 16 Apr 1893.
1 Isabel Thornhill, eldest daughter born circa 1829 married Charles N Peyton of
Mount Frances. Charles was the son of Charles J Peyton of Currrigard House, Co
Roscommon.
2 Henry Badham Thornhill eldest son born 4 Oct 1831 at Mallow was a sub
inspector of constabulary and died 18 Feb 1861.
3 Daughter Thornhill born 4 Feb 1833 at Cheltenham.
4 Adelaide Elizabeth Thornhill, second daughter born circa 1835 married Captain
Augustus N Wilson on 16 Feb 1861. Augustus was a captain with the 4th King’s
Regiment and the eldest son of Brigadier General Wilson, KH.
5 Son Thornhill born 1842 at Avranches, Normandy.
6 Jane Thornhill born at Castlekiven on 5 Feb 1848.
7 Daughter Thornhill born October 1849 at Castlekiven.
2 Anastasia Donovan second daughter baptised 11 Dec 1814 at St George's. She was
resident at Janeville, Taney and married James William Crowdy on 24 Aug 1840 at Taney
Church. James was with the 47th Regiment of Foot and the eldest son of the late William
Crowdy of Westrop House, Highworth, Wiltshire. Anastasia died 14 Jul 1897 at St
George’s House, Herne Bay. James died same place on 7 Oct 1899 aged 86.
1 Isabella Jane Crowdy eldest daughter married Emanuel Thomas Poe on
6 Oct 1859 in London.
2 Louisa Crowdy born circa 1853 in France, living with her parents at Fairford,
Cirencester in 1871.
3 Marianne Crowdy born circa 1857 living with her parents in 1891 at Herne Bay.
4 Horace Crowdy born circa 1858 in France living with his parents at Fairford,
Cirencester in 1871.
3 Isabella Jane Donovan youngest daughter born 9 Sep 1816 baptised at St George's.
She was living at Belmont House, Stillorgan and married W Edward Flood Sharpe of
Roundwood. Queens’s County at Stillorgan Church on 28 Jul 1832. Rev Dr Singer,
fellow of TCD officiated. Isabella died at Versailles on 23 Aug 1837.
