O'Callaghan family of Trimleston House
My great grandfather Mark Stokes O’Callaghan was born in Killarney in 1865, later he
moved to Cork where in 1885 he married Mary Anne Cantillon. She was the daughter of C J
Cantillon who had been the Mayor of Cork in 1865, and as a strange twist of fate C J
Cantillon had been the owner of The Gresham Hotel where Adam Scott lived for a number
of years.
They had 3 children, including my grandfather Cecil Stokes O’Callaghan. My great grandfather
Mark worked in insurance and moved to Dublin around 1895. In September 1904 he was
appointed as an assistant private secretary to Lord Dudley, the Lord Lieutenant.
My great grandfather knew Adam Scott, and he lived at Trimleston from October 1907 until
October 1909. He hosted his daughter Maud’s wedding reception there in October 1907 and
his granddaughter (my great aunt Peggy) was born there in November 1908.
Before any of this, back in 1905 Mark and Adam both appear in the newspapers as they are
involved in a scandal. Stories appeared in numerous newspapers in both Ireland and
England from 13th to 23rd January, and worldwide - in February in Melbourne, Australia and
March San Francisco, USA. They involve Mark Stokes O’Callaghan and Adam Scott as
directors of a wine company – hoping to sell wines to the nobility.
