Hugh Barton born circa 1766 fourth son of William Barton. He was a wine merchant and married
Anne Weld Johnston circa 1791 and they had at least nine children. He spent 1793/4 in jail in
France as an alien following the revolution before escaping back to Ireland. In 1802 he formalised
his partnership with Daniel Guestier forming the now famous B & G wine brand. In 1831 he
purchased the Straffan estate in Kildare and employed Frederick Darley to design and draw up
plans for a mansion (now part of the K Club) on the estate. Anna died 3 Aug 1842 at Straffan and
Hugh died 25 May 1854 at Straffan.
1 Nathaniel Barton born circa 1799 eldest son and heir to his father Hugh. He married Mary
Susannah Scott on 12 Jul 1823 at the British Ambassador’s Chapel. Mary was the second
daughter of Harry Scott, HM’s Consul at Bordeaux. They had at least nine children. Mary
died 18 Mar 1867 at Nice and Nathaniel died 29 Nov 1867 at Straffan.
1 Hugh Lyndoch Barton eldest son and heir born circa 1824. He married Anna Emily
Massy, daughter of Lord Clarina at 18 Apr 1855 at Kilkeedy Church, Limerick. Hugh died
in 1899 and the estate went to his brother Bertram.
2 Harry Fitzgerald Barton born circa 1826 died on 11 Jan1860 at Bordeaux.
3 Bertram Francis Barton third son born circa 1830 married Fannie Annie Cutler on
27 Sep 1855 at the British Embassy, Paris. Bertram inherited the Straffan estate on the
death of his brother in 1899.
4 Francis Savile Barton died 1 Jan 1848 in Italy.
2 Thomas Johnston Barton born September 1802. He was living at Battle Abbey, Sussex and
married Frances Morris on 25 Mar 1830 at Fairlight Church near Hastings. Frances was the
second daughter of the late Edward Morris, one of the Masters in the High Court of Chancery
and the grand-daughter of the late Lord Erskine. He purchased Glendalough House in 1838.
Thomas died on 4 Dec 1864 at St John’s, Roundtown late of Straffan and left 258k in personal
estate. He left £140k to be split between his two surviving sons and 128K to be split between
his four daughters. Frances died 4 Oct 1867 at 34 Elgin Road Dublin aged 57 and left 18k in
personal estate. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Thomas Erskine (Erskine) Barton eldest son born circa 1831. He died a bachelor
4 Oct 1867 late of Finglas and left 8k in personal estate. He is buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Frances Isabella Barton eldest daughter born circa 1833 in Baden, Baden. She married
Captain James Christine Hart on 19 May 1859 at the British Legation, Lisbon, Portugal.
James of Kirkton and Drumcross Hall, Linlithgowshire was with HM 16th Regiment of
Lancers. In 1871 they were living Borrowstone House, Kincardine O'Neill, Aberdeenshire
in Scotland. James died 12 Mar 1876 at Pau, France late of Borrowstone, Aberdeen. He
left personal estate of £240 in Ireland. Frances inherited 32K on the death of her father in
1880 and purchased Richmond cottage in Monkstown. She started on major building
works and renamed the house Dalguise. She was resident at Dalguise, Monkstown and
secondly married Fletcher Norton Menzies of Belmacuiel, Perth, Scotland on 23 Jun 1888
at Derrylossery Church near Roundwood, Co Wicklow. The best man was his brother Sir
Robert Menzies. The witnesses were Charles W Barton and Robert Menzies; the pages
were Master Robert Erskine and Master Thomas Barton. Fletcher was a widower with one
daughter and was the son of Sir Neil Menzies of Castle Menzies in the County of Perth.
They were living at Belmacuiel House, Little Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland in 1901 and
Fletcher was an extensive sheep farmer. Fletcher died in March 1905 aged 86 and was
buried with his first wife at Weem in Perthshire. Frances died 17 Feb 1908 at Kinrara,
Novara Avenue, Bray, Co Wicklow. She left 78k in personal estate, probate granted to
Hugh E B Massy, Robert C Barton and James W Booth. She is buried at Mount Jerome.
3 Robert Johnston Barton born circa 1839 Coldstream Guards. He was killed in action at
Zululand on 29 Mar 1879.
4 Georgiana Susannah Arabella Barton, second daughter born circa 1839 married George
Booth on 30 Oct 1856 at Derrylossery Church. George of Lara was a land owner and the
son of James Booth. Georgiana died 28 May 1868 at Straffan. George put Lara up for sale
in 1892 and died at Bective House, Co Meath on 28 Nov 1892. He left 11k in personal
estate, his daughter Beatrice his executrix.
1 George Booth eldest son born 26 Apr 1860 died 24 Aug 1901 in Oregon.
2 Beatrice Isabella Christine (Chrstine) Booth born 22 Mar 1861 at Merrion Square
baptised at St Stephen’s. She married John Watson on 16 May 1888 at St Stephen’s
Church. John was living at Ballydarton, Carlow and was the son of Robert Watson.
They later lived at Bective House, Navan where John died in 1908. They had one child
who died before 1911. Beatrice died 12 Sep 1924 at Donnybrook.
1 Christine Watson died aged 1 in 1890 and is buried at Mount Jerome.
5 Anna Mary Henrietta Barton third daughter born circa 1841 married Robert Caesar Childers
on 1 Jan 1867 at Lara. Robert was the son of the Rev Charles Childers of Nice, France.
Robert died 25 Jul 1876 in London. Anna was a widow living with her three daughters in
London in 1881 and her two sons were at College in Sussex. Anna died at a TB hospital in
Sunningdale on 29 Jan 1884 and their children were sent to Charles Barton at Glendalough
to be cared for.
1 Henry Caesar Childers born 23 Nov 1868 Herts baptised at Barnet, Middlesex living
with his grandmother at Glendalough House in 1901. He was educated at Harrow
and Sandhurst. He fought in WW1 and died in Canada on 19 Oct 1963.
2 Robert Erskine (Erskine) Childers second son born 1870 in London. He was author
of the spy novel 'Riddle of the Sands'. He was a republican and was executed in 1922
by the Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War at Beggars Bush, Dublin.
3 Sybil Rose Culling Childers born 1871 in Hertfordshire. She died unmarried in 1954.
4 Dulcibella Mary Childers born circa 1873 in London married Henry A Philpot in 1920
in London.
5 Constance Isabel Barton Childers born 1875 in Kensington, London. She married
Charles Elrington Duncan Davidson-Houston on 11 Feb 1907 at Agra, Bengal. Charles
was a captain in the Indian army and the son of Bennett Clear Davidson-Houston
6 Beatrice Louisa Barton born circa 1843 married Captain Hugh Francis Massy on 3 Dec 1864
at Bray Church. Hugh was with the 19th Regiment and the son of the Rev W Massy, rector of
Clonbeg, Tipperary. Beatrice died 23 Jan 1893 at Bray and is buried at Mount Jerome.
7 Hugh Massy Barton born circa 1844. Late of the 17th Lancers, he died a bachelor on
28 Feb 1880 at Moorcroft, Hillingdon, Middlesex.
8 Charles William Barton born circa 1846. He married Agnes Alexandra Frances Childers on
26 Oct 1876 at St Paul’s, Clifton. Agnes was the fourth daughter of the Rev Charles Childers
of Nice, France and Canon of Gibraltar. Charles inherited 70k on the death of his father. He
was a JP of Glendalough House, Annamoe and died 3 Oct 1890 at Glendalough House from
typhoid, his granddaughter Sybil the informant. He left 11k in personal estate and is
buried at Mount Jerome. Agnes was living at Glendalough House with her son Robert in 1911
and died 13 Aug 1918 aged 70 at Glendalough House.
1 Frances Margaret Barton born 21 Dec 1877 in Dublin died unmarried on 10 May 1965
and is buried at Derrylossery.
2 Dulcibella Barton born 1880 at Annamoe died unmarried on 5 Jun 1956 and is buried at
Derrylossery.
3 Robert Childers Barton (twin) born 14 Mar 1881 in Co Wicklow living with his mother at
Glendalough House in 1911. He enlisted with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers but resigned
his commission and joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood.
4 Hugh Barton (twin) born 14 Mar 1881 died 17 Mar 1881 and is buried at Derrylossery.
5 Charles Erskine Barton born 7 Dec 1882 at Glendalough House living with his wife Nora
at Dunganstown in 1911. He enlisted with the Royal Irish Rifles and died of wounds on
23 Aug 1918.
6 Thomas Eyre Barton born 15 Aug 1885 at Annamoe living in London in 1911. He enlisted
with the Royal Irish Rifles and was killed in action on 16 Jul 1916.
7 Agnes Rose Barton died 16 May 1892 age 2 and is buried at Derrylossery.
3 Daniel Barton third son born circa 1810. He joined the 7th Regiment and retired a captain in 1834
to join the 36th. He married Margaret Sampson on 30 Apr 1846 at Hampton Church, Middlesex. He
died 5 May 1879 in Edinburgh.
1 Daniel Fitzgerald Pakenham Barton born 26 Jan 1850 at 11 Lyndoch Place, Edinburgh. He was
HM Consul to Geneva and married Victoria Alexandrina Julia Peel on 10 Nov 1887. Victoria was
the daughter of Sir Robert Peel (3rd Baronet) and Lady Emily Hay. She was also a god daughter
of Queen Victoria and received a diamond and enamel brooch from her as a wedding gift.
Daniel died 8 Jul 1907 in Geneva and left 83k in personal estate. Victoria died in 1935 in Geneva
and left 107k in personal estate.
4 Hugh Barton youngest son born circa 1807 died at Brighton on 8 Nov 1860 and left 60k in personal
estate.
5 Susan Elizabeth Barton youngest daughter born circa 1810 married Lord Clarina (Eyre Massy) of
Battle Abbey in Sussex in September 1828. Susan Dowager Clarina died 14 Nov 1886 at Elm Park,
Limerick.
