NAME Montpelier Cottage/ Montpelier Manor
AREA LOCATION Monkstown Road, junction of Montpelier Manor estate.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838 - 1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland
of Montpelier and it is annotated as Mont Pelier Cottage and
Montpelier Manor.
GENERAL A fashionable residence on 2 acres built in the Elizabethan & Tudor
style possibly on the site of an older house named Mont Pelier Cottage. It had seven
bedrooms and five reception rooms with servants apartments. Its front entrance was
on the Bray Road opposite Newtown Park and the back entrance was on Monkstown
Road near Temple Hill. There was a rabbit furrier farm in the grounds in 1943 which
was run by Dowd and Martin. For sale in 1962 on about 1.5 acres it was described as
a Tudor mansion. It has an entrance hall and double staircase with a gallery. It had
three reception rooms and five bedrooms with two bathrooms. The coach house was
converted into a residence circa 1955.
YEAR BUILT circa 1853
VALUATION In 1921 the valuation was £73 and in the 1901 census it is noted that
there were 15 rooms occupied by family.
ARCHITECT Unknown but builder is possibly Hugh Kelly of 164 Great Brunswick Street.
