NAME Monkstown House Farm/Fairy Land/Ranelagh House/Monkstown Park
AREA LOCATION Monkstown Avenue
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838 - 1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of
Monkstown Housefarm and it is annotated as Monkstown Park on
both.
GENERAL It was described as being on 14 acres and opposite Monkstown Castle
during the tenure of Viscount Ranelagh. In 1883 and 1903 it was for sale on 14 acres described
as a large mansion with two gatelodges and a gardeners cottage. The grounds were ornamented
with fine old timber and flowering shrubs. It was two storey over basement, had two entrance
halls, drawing rooms, dining rooms, morning rooms, library and billiards rooms. It also had a
large conservatory and walled in gardens.
YEAR BUILT Old house demolished and Monkstown Park built in 1843.
VALUATION In 1894 the valuation was 164 pounds and in the 1911 census it is
noted as having 17 rooms in use by the school.
ARCHITECT Unknown, original house demolished circa 1843 and a new house
built on a different site within the park.
