George Paul Monck born circa 1730 at Castle Dawson, Londonderry son of Henry Stanley
Monck and Jane Percy of Stephen’s Green. His father died circa 1746. The walled dwelling
house on one acre at the East end of Stephen’s Green was put up for let for 7 years in 1748
during his minority. He married Lady Araminta Beresford on 22 Apr 1755 (ML) and they
moved into the house at Stephen’s Green. Araminta was the daughter of Marcus Beresford,
Earl of Tyrone and Catherine Power, heiress of the House of De La Poer and sister to
George, 1st Marquess of Waterford. He put his estate (upwards of 114 acres) at
Leopardstown up for let in 1763/4. These lands were close to Stillorgan and near the
improved grounds at Kilmacud and were being let in parcels to encourage building. He was
returned as MP for the borough of Coleraine in 1763 to 1768. He was elected Governor of
the Dublin Workhouse in 1764. He went forward as a candidate for Westmeath in 1768 but
wasn’t elected and put 600 acres of land up for let in Dirnagaragh, Westmeath the same
year. George, the self proclaimed lineal descendant of General Monck, Duke of Albernarle
died 7 Oct 1804 at Green Park Place, Bath. He is buried at St Michael’s Churchyard, Weston,
Bath. Araminta died on 20 Dec 1818 at Green Park Place, Bath and is buried with her
husband.
1 Henry Monck eldest son born April 1756. He married Elizabeth Araminta Gore circa
1783. Elizabeth was the daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore, Earl of Arran and his first
wife Catherine Annesley. Henry died 28 Dec 1815 at Green Park Place, Bath. Lady
Elizabeth died aged 81 on 27 Jun 1845 aged 81 at her house in St James’ Place late of
Hampton Court Palace.
1 Catherine Anne Isabella Monck born circa 1784 married Dominick Browne, 1st
Baron Oranmore and Browne.
2 Elizabeth Araminta Monck born circa 1787 married Charles Paget (later Vice
admiral Sir Charles Paget). Charles died in 1839 and Elizabeth died 17 Aug 1843.
2 Daughter Monck born April 1757.
3 Jane Monck born circa 1758. She married Edward Johnston of Dromin, Co Wicklow, and
Woodpark, Co Armagh on 1 Aug 1785 (ML). She died at Lansdown Crescent,
Cheltenham on 31 Aug 1852, in the ninety-fourth year of her age.
4 Catherine Monck born 23 Apr 1759. She married Arthur Dawson of Castle Dawson on
3 Jun 1775 and they had a least four sons and eight daughters. Arthur was for many
years, MP for Middleton and Banagher. Arthur died 6 Dec 1822. Catherine died at Bath
on 20 May 1838 and is buried in the vaults of Weston Church.
1 Henry Richard Dawson second son born on 23 Dec 1792. He married Frances
Heseltine circa 1830. Frances was the daughter of James Heseltine. Henry was
Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin from 1828 to 1840, and Rector of
Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny. He was also Vice President of the Royal Irish Academy in
1840 and a noted Irish antiquarian. He died from typhus on 24 Oct 1840 and is
interred in St Patrick’s Cathedral. His antiquities collection was purchased by the
RIA.
1 Arthur Altham Dawson born circa 1832 took Holy orders.
5 Marcus Monck baptised 8 Nov 1759 in the parish of St Peters. He graduated Trinity and
took Holy orders. He married Ann Keily in 1784. He was rector of Rathdowney living at
Johnstown Glebe in 1821 and died in April 1849 at 16 Adelaide Terrace, Notting Hill.
1 Sarah Elizabeth Monck only daughter married Captain John Rankin of the 76th
Regiment on 2 Feb 1819 at Glashare.
6 George Monck baptised 4 Jan 1761 in the parish of St Peters.
7 Ann Monck baptised at St Peter’s Dublin on 1 Jun 1762 was residual legatee and executrix
to her mother. She died unmarried on 11 Dec 1830 and is buried with her parents.
8 Araminta Monck born circa 1765 married the Rev Gustavus Hume at Drummore Lodge,
Co Wicklow in September 1794. Rev Hume, rector of Edermine, Co Wexford died aged
38 on 31 Apr 1805 in Dublin at the residence of his brother. Araminta died in May 1805
at Dawson Street, survived by two daughters.
9 Emily Sophie Monck born circa 1770 married Lieutenant General Sir John Hamilton, Bart
of Woodbrook on 1 May 1794. They had one son and at least two daughters. Lady Emily
died on 5 Jan 1856 at Baker Street, Portman Square.
1 James John Hamilton only son born 1 Mar 1802 married Marianna Augusta
Cockburn in 1824. Marianne was the daughter of Major General Sir James Cockburn,
Bart. He succeeded as 2nd Bart in 1835. Sir James died on 12 Jan 1876.
10 Elizabeth Frances Monck married William Deane Staples on 31 Dec 1799. She secondly
married William Ogle Wallace Ogle of Causey Park, Northumberland in July 1811.
Elizabeth died 8 Apr 1819 at Clifton.
