Edward Moeran* born circa 1770 was a musician, singer and music merchant of Rutland
Street, Cork. He married Margaret Busteed in Cork on 21 Mar 1808. Margaret was the
daughter of Michael and Margaret Busteed and the granddaughter of Jephson Busteed.
Edward was organist at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and they lived at Wood View, Blackrock, Cork.
He regularly gave concerts to raise funds for the Cork Fever Hospital. He also appeared
at the Cork Assembly Rooms playing pianoforte and singing glees. In 1836 he offered
pianoforte and singing lessons having studied with Austrian composer Henri Herz. Edward
died from bronchitis aged 84 at 139 Glanmire Road, Cork on 17 Feb 1865. Margaret died
circa 1877 late of 65 Glanmire Road.
1 Edward Busteed Moeran born 1809 in Cork graduated Trinity College Dublin and
was a distinguished scholar in mathematics and the Sanskrit language. He took Holy
orders in 1843 and was incumbent of Kingstown. He married Christiana Mills on
19 Feb 1844 at Monkstown Church. Christiana was the only daughter of the late
James G Mills of Tullylost, Co Kildare. He was a competent yachtsman and took part
in the Youghal Regatta later that year. Edward was a professor of Moral Philosophy
at Trinity in 1852 and toured the country giving charity sermons. He was the vicar of
Taney from 1857 to 1865 and lived at Richview, Sydenham Road. Christiana died
7 Dec 1862 at Dundrum.
1 Daughter Moeran born February 1845 at Kingstown. This is possibly
Caroline Augusta, who died on 13 Oct 1906 at Douglas, Isle of Man after
being knocked down. Her executor was Archibald Edward Moeran.
2 Edward H Moeran eldest son born circa 1848 at Kingstown. He graduated
Marlborough College where he captained the cricket and football team. He
afterwards graduated Trinity College Dublin. He moved to New York,
studied law and took up conveyancing and was counsel for the Marconi
Wireless Radio Company. He was a founder member of the St George Society
and a member of the Union League Club. He married Elizabeth H (Lily) Steers
on 27 Jun 1872. Lily was the second daughter of Abraham Steers of New York
and died in 1896. Edward died on 5 Dec 1904 at 132 West Twelfth Street,
New York.
Edward secondly married Isabelle Jane Barton at Taney Church on the 7 Feb 1865.
Isabelle was the daughter of John Barton of Stone House, Donnybrook. They had seven
children. He was incumbent of Killyleagh from 1870 and later Dean of Down from 1876.
Edward died 13 Oct 1887 at the Rectory in Killyleagh, Co Down. Isabella moved back to
Dundrum and lived at Mopoon Villa from 1901. Isabelle died aged 81 at Mopoon on
20 Feb 1913 and her son Archibald was her executor.
3 Francis Meredith Moeran born 25 Feb 1866 at Richview, Sydenham Road,
Dundrum. He took Holy orders and was ordained in 1889 for an English curacy
and was a curate at Armagh in 1891. He married Clara Edith Walsh on
25 Apr 1893 at St Canice’s Cathedral. Clara was the daughter of Bishop of
Ossory; William Packenham Walsh. He was living at the Rectory, Cookstown in
1913 and was rector of Portadown from 1915 to 1929 and retired in 1938. Canon
Moeran died 17 Nov 1952 at Tanis, Newcastle, Co Down. He was survived by his
wife and two daughters. Clara died at Maidenhead age 84 on 22 Oct 1953.
4 Cecil Barton Moeran born 27 Feb 1867 at Richview, Dundrum attend the Royal
School Armagh and joined the Connaught Rangers. It emigrated and was
working on the Panama Canal in 1906 with an address in Trinidad. He died in
California on 12 Apr 1937.
5 Robert Warner Moeran third son born 14 Aug 1868 at Killyleagh Rectory, Co
Down and went to Canada in 1903 to prospect. He was a bachelor and was back
in Ireland in 1911. He returned to British Columbia and lived at Princetown. He
joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He died of wounds on 26 Jul 1916.
6 Archibald Edward (Archie) Moeran fourth son born 23 Oct 1869 at Killyleagh
Rectory. He married Frances Helen Locke Pring of at Dundrum on 17 Nov 1897.
Frances was the daughter of Dr Edward Locke Pring of The Peakes, California. In
1911 they were living at Stillorgan Park and five of their eight children had
survived. Archie was land agent for Lord Harewood, Galway and a forestry and
timber expert. They later lived at Borrisokane, Co Tipperary. Archie died
6 Jan 1961 and was buried at Portumna.
7 Henry Hope Moeran born 29 Mar 1871 at Killyleagh Rectory worked for Guinness’
and died a widower on 2 May 1961 at Ballintemple, Cove.
8 Isabel Ethel Janet Moeran born 30 October 1872 at Killyleagh Rectory.
9 Catherine Lilian Moeran born 26 Aug 1875 at Killyleagh Rectory in Co Down was
unmarried and living with her mother at Mopoon in 1911. She died unmarried
on 21 Oct 1961 at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital late of Dundrum Lodge.
2 Francis Jepson Moeran second son died at Wood View, Blackrock on 28 Dec 1828.
3 Margaret Moeran eldest daughter married Lewis Morris of Dublin in July 1829 at St
Michael's, Blackrock, Cork.
4 Susanna Amelia Moeran second daughter married Abraham Steers on 8 Sep 1832 at
St Ann’s Shandon, Cork.
5 Thomas Warner Moeran born circa 1820 in Cork graduated Trinity College and took
Holy orders and was curate at Youghal before being appointed to the curacy of St
Matthew's, Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1849 where he was appointed vicar in 1857. He
married Frances Byrne at St Peter’s, Dublin on 30 Nov 1853. Frances was the only
daughter of Joseph James Byrne, a civil engineer of 10 Mount Street.
1 Frances Martha Sophia Moeran died an infant at Mount Street, Dublin on
15 Oct 1855.
2 Edward Joseph Moeran born at Mount Street, Dublin on 19 Dec 1856.
3 Joseph William Wright born 29 Oct 1858 at Mount Street. He was educated at
St Catherine’s College, Cambridge and took Holy Orders and was appointed
curate at the parish church of St Paul’s, Upper Norwood. He married Ada
Esther Smeed Whall on 10 Apr 1888. Ada was the daughter of Benjamin James
Whall of Glasgow and his wife Esther Smeed.
1 William Graham Moeran born 3 Apr 1899 at Upper Norwood.
2 Ernest John Smeed Moeran born 31 Dec 1894 at Spring Grove, Isleworth,
Middlesex. He was a composer and studied under Charles Villiers
Stanford. He fought in WW1 and was wounded on 3 May 1917 at
Bullecourt, near Arras. He lived the rest of life with shrapnel too close to
his brain to be removed. From 1928 he spent much of his time in Ireland
studying folk music and composing. In 1945 he married the cellist Peers
Coetmore but they seldom lived together. He was found dead in the
Kenmare river having suffered a heart attack and fallen in on 1 Dec 1950.

6 Emmanuel Moeran, youngest son born circa 1822 died 18 Jan 1857 at 4 Wellington
Terrace, Cork.
7 Elizabeth Browne Moeran fourth daughter married Rev Francis W Sandy on 16 Nov 1852
at Christ Church, Detroit. Francis was the Rector of St Paul’s Church, Chatham, Canada
West.
* Edward may have been married previously to a Miss Nesbitt at St Finbarr's Cathedral in December
1802 (Edward Moran - Professor of Music). There was also a child prodigy that played in the Theatre
Royal, Dublin in 1799/1800 called Master Moran (ability to play three Dussek sonatas aged 9 if the age
was understated).
