Matthew Joseph McCabe born 1870 in Amore, Kings County son of Michael McCabe, a
poulterer/shopkeeper and his wife Anne Carberry. He was a butcher of 11 Rathgar Road
when he married Annie Hanlon on 17 Oct 1892 at Rathgar RC Church. Annie was living at
Rathmines and was the daughter of Arthur Hanlon, a farmer. By 1903 he was the co owner
with his brothers William and Matthew of the successful South City Markets (George’s Street
Arcade) and they had a royal warrant by 1907. Both his parents died at Wynfield Park,
Rathmines in 1908 within weeks of each other. In 1911 they were living a Harold’s Cross
Road and six of their eight children had survived. He moved to Beaufort, Rathfarnham in
1912 and moved to Trimleston, Booterstown in 1918. He sold Beaufort to the Loretto
order in 1925. He was elected to the Dublin Port and Docks Board in 1933 and they
moved from Trimleston to Knocksedan on Shrewsbury Road in 1936.
He was chairman of Messrs McCabe Ltd, fish and poultry merchants. He was also a joint
owner along with his older brother William, a senator, of the Dublin Pure Ice and Cold
Storage Company. Matthew retired in 1954 and Annie died 10 Dec 1954 at Shrewsbury
Road. Matthew died on 9 Mar 1955 at Rossbegh, Shrewsbury Road. The closure of South
City Markets and its seven branches was announced in 1956 with the loss of 100 jobs, citing
the death of their father and difficult trading conditions.

2 Michael J McCabe eldest son born 3 Feb 1896 at Lower Camden Street. He worked
for McCabes Ltd and was later a director of Clondalkin Paper Mills. He married
Gwladys Eileen Orr on 6 Jun 1923 at the Church of St Mary’s , Booterstown. Gwladys
was the daughter of the late Arthur James Orr and the granddaughter of Rev Robert
Orr. They lived at Argyle Road, Donnybrook and later at Clyde Road.
1 Anne Christine Maeve (Maeve) McCabe eldest daughter born 16 Apr 1924. She
married Francis Michael Black at Brompton Oratory on 22 Apr 1949. Francis was
the only son of Robert Black, late of Calcutta and Belle Lake, Ross Duff, Waterford.
3 Sarah Josephine (Dolly) McCabe born at Lower Camden Street on 12 Oct 1897. She
married Andrew Boland on 12 Sep 1923 at St Mary’s Booterstown. Andrew was a
licenced vintner and the son of the late Patrick Boland of St Michael’s, Booterstown.
He managed Davy Byrnes in Duke Street for his uncle and was left the pub when his
uncle died. They lived at Sydney Parade.
4 Kathleen McCabe born 6 Jun 1899 in Dublin City living at Trimleston in 1926.
5 Arthur McCabe second son born 24 Oct 1900 at Rathmines Road. He was educated at
Clongowes and entered the firm of Messrs Knight, Frank and Rutley of Hanover Square,
London as an articled clerk. He passed his final exams in 1923 obtaining 1st place and
the gold medal. In 1936 Arthur and Herbert Jackson-Stops, established an associate firm
in Dublin and operated as Jackson-Stops & McCabe, auctioneer and estate agents of
Kildare Street. He was living at Knocksedan, Shrewsbury Road when he married Therese
Rosa Hammond on 8 Sep 1939 at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook. Therese
was the daughter of Edmund Hammond of Manchester. Arthur died at St Gabriel’s
Hospital, Cabinteely on 6 May 1975 late of Glen House, Glen O’ the Downs and is buried
at Deansgrange.

7 Mary Carmel McCabe born 14 Jul 1904 at Rathmines Road died same place on
22 Feb 1905.
8 Matthew Joseph Leo (Leo) McCabe born 19 Jul 1906 in Co Dublin. He was an actor and
went to Hollywood, he appeared in a number of films including The House of Rothchild in
1934 and also did radio work. On his return to Dublin, he took to stage and as a regular in
the Olympia. He purchased the Olympia Theatre with Stanley Illsely in 1951 and
managed it for 12 years. In 1957 Stanley and Leo McCabe refurbished the theatre at a
cost of 15k; installing modern oil fired central heating and air conditioning. In 1963 they
put the theatre up for sale by auction. Leo died unmarried and is buried at Deansgrange
with his parents.
9 Edward William (Eddie) McCabe born 16 Aug 1913 at Beaufort. Initially he worked for
McCabe Ltd but moved to Dublin Pure Ice and Cold Storage Company. He changed the
name to Autozero and developed the refrigeration business in Ireland. He married
Maude Eileen (Mieckel) Retz at Wandsworth in 1939. Maude was the daughter of George
Retz and Babette Baker. Edward was the liaison officer for the Adoption Society (Eire)
and campaigned to legalise adoption in Ireland. He was a keen golfer and a member of
Woodbrook and Portmarnock. He was president of the Dublin Rotary Club in 1956/7.
He died 19 Jan 1967 at the Meath Hospital late of Herbert Hill, Dundrum, his funeral mass
was held in Sandyford and he is buried at Deansgrange.
