Thomas Mitchell born circa 1730 son of Thomas Mitchell. He was of Ballendeny, Roscommon
when he married Elizabeth Wills on 23 Jun 1753. Elizabeth was the daughter of Godfrey Wills
and Sarah Montgomery of Will’s Grove near Roscommon. In 1756 Thomas was leasing 840
acres at Ballinderry from Viscount Lord Kingsland. In 1762 Thomas was offering free houses
and looms to common weavers to come and settle in Fuerty. By 1763 he had established a
large factory and 20 houses there and was looking for linen weavers and winders. In 1764
he was offering a 30l to a bleacher to manage his 26 acre bleach field. He had land at
Carrowmore and Carrowbeg in Longford which he was leasing out in 1767. He died
6 Aug 1799 at Castlestrange.
1 Thomas Mitchell born circa 1757. Thomas the younger was appointed sheriff of
Roscommon in 1783. He was secretary to the Roscommon Mountain Rangers in 1790.
He died at his house in Talbot Street, Dublin on 5 Feb 1831.
1 John Mitchell born circa 1780. He was a captain in the Roscommon Militia and
married Henrietta Massey in 1801. He died 15 Sep 1822 at Colemene, Co
Roscommon.
1 Thomas Mitchell born circa 1803 shot his 14 year brother by accident in 1818.
He graduated Trinity.
2 Son Mitchell born circa 1804 died in 1818.
3 John Henry Mitchell born circa 1805 Coolmean, Co Roscommon. He married
Maryanne Blakeney on 10 Jan 1833 at Eastersnow Church, Roscommon.
Maryanne was the only daughter of Robert Blakeney, barrister of Curraghmore,
Co Roscommon and Fitzwilliam Square. John died in May 1843 and Maryanne
died 9 May 1875 at George’s Avenue, Blackrock aged 66.
1 Catherine Anne Mitchell eldest daughter born 1833 married Anthony
Pack on 16 Feb 1860 at Monkstown. Anthony was the son of Rev Richard
Pack. Catherine died in Kilkenny in 1876. Anthony a widower living at
Christchurch, Dorset in 1891.
2 Richard Blakeny Mitchell eldest son born 23 Jan 1835 at Hazelbrook, Co
Roscommon. He was of Coolmeen, Co Roscommon and died on
21 Sep 1858 at Dawson Court, Blackrock.
4 Rev Henry Hickman Massey Mitchell born circa 1810 died on 22 Jul 1839 at
Waltham Terrace, Kingstown.
5 Edward Mitchell born circa 1816 graduated Trinity and died at Sydney Avenue,
Blackrock on 24 Sep 1842.
6 James Fitzgerald Massey Mitchell born circa 1819 graduated Trinity. He was
with the Roscommon Militia and joined the Connaught Rangers. He died at
Cawnpore in December 1857.
2 Edward Mitchell born circa 1788 married Marianna Wray at Holy Trinity Church,
Hull on 7 Mar 1803. Marianne was the daughter of John Wray, a banker. He died
11 Jul 1858 at Castlestrange. Marianne died 5 May 1865 at Castlestrange aged 83.
1 Marianne Mitchell second daughter died 19 May 1862 at Castlestrange.
2 John Wray Mitchell, only son born circa 1808. He married Anne Sarah Wray at
St Martin’s, London on 8 Mar 1838. Anne was the eldest daughter of John Wray
of Suffolk Place, London. He was a major general in the Royal Artillery and died
a widower on 30 Oct 1878 at Castlestrange. He left 10k in personal estate.
1 Edward Mitchell eldest son born 14 Jul 1839 at Deal in Kent joined the
Royal Engineers in 1868 and attained the rank of Colonel having served
31 years and then being compelled to retire. He sought a pension from
the War Office but it was denied and he took the matter to court from
1890 to 1896 but they had no power to intervene. He married Ella
Atwood on 7 Oct 1869 at St Matthew’s Oakley Square. Ella was the
daughter of James Atwood, Consul at Bermuda for the Kingdom of Spain.
They were living with their daughter Grace in Canada in 1871 and
Battersea in 1901.
2 Anne Sarah (Annie) Mitchell born 24 Sep 1841 in Kent died
unmarried in 1929.
3 John Wray Mitchell youngest son born 11 Mar 1843 in Kent. He married
Lelia Jane Rourke on 27 Apr 1878 at Monkstown Parish Church. Lelia was
the daughter of Rev Thomas O’Rourke of Glenageary Hill, Kingstown. They
lived at Araghty Grange and had six children. He was a JP and died
16 Feb 1899 at Kingstown Hospital. He is buried at Mount Jerome. Lelia
died on 13 Jan 1927 at Hayling Island and is buried there.
1 Mary Violet Mitchell married Gordon Grant Redman on
8 Sep 1910 at Leeson Park.
2 Gladys Lily Mitchell married Captain John Percy Whelan in 1907.
4 Mary Mitchell born 25 Dec 1844 in Kent married William Bourke
Wright on 09 Sep 1874 at Athleague Church. William was a widower
and clergyman with four young children. He was the son of Richard
Wright. The couple had five children and Mary died in 1882. William
married a third time and had five more children.
1 Alice Bourke Wright born 27 Apr 1879 at Athleague Vicarage.
2 Ella Mary Bourke Wright married William Chapman Croly in
1903. William was the son of Henry Croly late of Kilmacud
House.
5 Catherine Mitchell youngest daughter born 1848 in Cheshire was
living at Araghty Grange when she married William Perkins Radcliff
on 13 Nov 1879. William was the fifth son of Arthur Radcliff of
Hurdlestown.
3 Sarah Mitchell eldest daughter married Rev William Hutchinson in
London in 1827.
3 Arthur Mitchell third son died in 1837.
2 Catherine Mitchell died at Whitworth Lancashire where she had gone for the benefit
of her health in April 1805.
3 Martha Mitchell third daughter married Rev Stephen Radcliffe on 22 Dec 1785 at
Castlestrange.
4 Sarah Mitchell married Rev Thomas Cowper in May 1787 at Castlestrange. Thomas was
the vicar of Taunagh, Co Sligo.
5 Elizabeth Mitchell fourth daughter married Rev Thomas Radcliffe in November 1792 at
Castlestrange.
6 Jane Mitchell married Rev John O’Rorke of Moylough at Castlecoote in September 1806.
Castlestrange burned down in 1919. James Mulry who had worked on the estate as a child and
emigrated to America bought the house and died in 1897. His son Thomas leased the house
and 100 acres to William A Byrne and then sold the estate to the Congested Districts Board.

Thomas Mitchell born circa 1730 son of Thomas Mitchell. He was of Ballendeny, Roscommon
