Thomas Meates born circa 1828 son of William Meates of Cuff Lane, a carpenter. He was an
organ builder and married widow Anne Elders on 7 Nov 1853 at St Peter’s. Anne was the
daughter of Richard Meates, a sawyer and was living at Redmond’s Hill. Thomas died
22 Jul 1885 at the Adelaide Hospital. Anne died at the Adelaide Hospital late of 79 Harold’s
Cross on 12 Nov 1888.
1 William Meates born circa 1855 at 3 Cuffe Lane baptised at St Peters on 28 Jan 1855.
He worked for William Telford, organ builder from when he was a boy. William
Telford had his house and office at 109 Stephen’s Green and his factory premises
ran from the rear of Stephen’s Green to Cuff Lane. William was the senior sound
board maker and foreman at the firm. He was an organ builder living at
Ballyedmonduff, late of New York and married Mary Anne Taylor at Kilternan Church
on 31 Dec 1884. Mary Anne was living at Ballyedmonduff and was the daughter of
Robert Taylor, a farmer. In 1901 they were living at 21 Lennox Place. In 1905 William
Telford’s eldest son died and his younger son Edward took over. In 1911 the Meates
family were living at Rugby Road and all six of their children had survived. In 1912
the lease on the Stephen’s Green premises expired and Telford & Telford moved to
Charlemont Street. Edward Telford took William Meates into partnership at their
premises at Charlemont Street. Mary died 19 May 1922 at 48 Oakley Road. Edward
Telford died in 1932 and William was the informant of his death. They traded as
Telford and Telford (Meates Bros) after his death. William died a widower at 48 Oakley
Road on 8 Feb 1937 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Thomas Meates born 15 Aug 1886 at 38 Warren Street baptised at St Peter’s.
He was an organ builder in 1911. He was a senior partner of Messrs Telford &
Telford and during his tenure they had contracts with the Mater chapel,
Loretto, Rathfarnham, Carysfort Training College, St Andrew’s Westland Row
and installed a new organ at Mount Melleray. He died a bachelor on
29 Dec 1949 at Bloomfield, Donnybrook late of ‘Aherlow’, 42 The Rise, Mount
Merrion. His funeral was held at St Peter’s Church, Aungier Street, Dublin to
Mount Jerome. Meates Bros closed shortly after his death.
2 Robert Meates born 25 Feb 1891 at 21 Lennox place. He was an organ builder
in 1911. He was living at Riden Street, Belfast and married Lilian Susan Ridley
on 12 Jul 1912 at St Mathias Church. Lilian was a servant living at Earlsfort
Terrace and was the daughter of George Ridley, a mechanic. They lived at
Mornington Road. Robert died on 25 May 1936 and is buried at Mount Jerome.
Lilian died 28 Jan 1967 aged 76 in Nottingham at the home of her son and is
buried at Mount Jerome.

3 Margaret Anne (Annie) Meates born circa 1895 died unmarried from flu at 48
Oakley Road on 2 Mar 1919.
4 William Meates born 23 Dec 1896 at 21 Lennox Place. He was a commercial
clerk living at 48 Oakley Road, Ranelagh and married Kathleen Boyle on
23 Dec 1933 at Holy Trinity Church Rathmines. Kathleen was the daughter of
Robert Boyle, a farmer and was living at Moyne Road, Rathmines. William a
company director died 10 Jul 1972 at Rowan Park and was buried at St Brigid’s.
Kathleen died 26 Aug 1975 and is buried with her husband.
5 Richard Edward Meates born 18 Mar 1900 at 21 Lennox Place. He was an
organ builder living at 48 Oakley Road and married Sarah Louisa Boyle on
28 Oct 1924 at Christchurch Leeson Park. Sarah was living at Chelmsford
Road and was the daughter of Robert Boyle, a farmer. Her sister Lilian Meates
was a witness. Richard continued the organ building, repair and tuning
business, trading as R E Meates and sons from the SCR. The installed the
organ at the Curragh Camp church in 1961. Richard died 19 Nov 1971 at 29
Emorville Avenue, Dublin 8 and was buried at St Brigid’s. Sarah died some
years later and is buried at St Brigid’s.
6 Henry (Harry) Meates born 29 Mar 1906 at 18 Rugby Road, Rathmines. He
was living Mornington Road, Dublin and married Margaret Mary Quigley on
20 Oct 1937 at St Finbarr’s Church, Cork. Margaret was living at Merrion Road,
Dublin and was the daughter of Patrick Quigley, a grocer. He was a partner in
Telford and Telford (Meates Bros) of 33 Charlemont Street in 1938 and supplied
the organ for St John’s Church, Waterford.
2 Mary Meates born circa 1857 at 26 French Street baptised at St Peter’s 3 May 1857.
She married James Prendergast at the Dublin Registrar’s office on 28 Jun 1884.
3 Thomas Leonard Meates born circa 1860 at 23 William’s Place baptised at St Peters
on 29 Jan 1860.
