George Munro Meares born 2 Sep 1871 son of Robert Meares, a Presbyterian clergyman of Jonesboro’
and later of Stewartstown, and his wife Anna Crawley. He was grandson of George Meares of
Moyvore in Co Westmeath. When George was ten, their house at Falthorn in Newry was burned to
the ground but the family escaped unhurt. George qualified as a solicitor in 1894 and originally had
an office at Dawson Street. He formed a partnership with Edward White and they practiced for a
number of years from Molesworth Street. He was living at Serpentine Avenue in 1901 and married
Minnie Foddy on 7 Aug 1901 at Liskeard, Cornwall. Minnie was the eldest daughter of William Foddy,
of Liskeard, a master tailor and his wife Fanny Maria Beare. The family were lived at Foxrock before
moving to Farm Hill in 1914. Minnie died at Farm Hill on 6 Jul 1917 aged 45 and was buried at
Deansgrange. George was the senior partner in the firm of White and Meares, solicitors of 41 St
Stephen's Green, Dublin.
1 Keith Munro Meares born 9 Jul 1902 at Claremount Road, Donnybrook was educated at
Portora Royal school, graduated Trinity in 1924 and was called to the bar the same year.
He was an amateur lawn tennis player, and hon secretary of the Old Portora Union in the
1950 & 60’s.
2 Cynthia Meares born 20 Aug 1904 at Grindelwald, Foxrock married George Brownrigg
Taylor on 22 Nov 1933 at St Mary’s, Donnybrook. George was a maltster from Ballinacurra,
Cork and the son of Edward Henry Taylor, surgeon of Ballyconnell, Co Carlow.
3 Clarice Thelma Meares born 9 Mar 1907 at Grindeleald, Foxrock was a talented golfer. She
never married and was buried with her parents and stepmother at Deansgrange.
4 Enid Gwynith Meares born 24 May 1911 at Grindeleald, Foxrock was educated at Alexandra
College. She married the Rev Derek Ross on 10 Apr 1940 at St Mary's Church, Donnybrook.
Derek was resident in Sussex and the son of the Rev Robert Ross of Middlesex.
5 Denis Edmund Meares born 9 Mar 1914 at Farmhill, Dundrum graduated Trinity in 1937. He
was working as a medical officer at the Royal United Hospital, Bath in 1939. He was engaged
to Winifred Margaret Matthews in 1946. Dr Denis Meares married Patricia Mary de Blaby of
Belvere Manor, Worchester at St Mary’s of the Angels Church, Paddington in March 1948.
George secondly married Marie Swayne on 25 April 1918 at Killiney RC Church. Marie was the
daughter of John B Swayne, late accountant general of the Bank of Ireland. He was a director of the
General Accident, Fire and Life Assurance Company and a founding member of the Kilcroney County
and Sports Club. George died at the Meath Hospital late of Woodview, Stillorgan Road on 26 Dec 1951
and was buried with his first wife. Marie died at 25 Orwell Park on 12 Jun 1962 aged 84 and her funeral
was held at St Thomas' on Foster Avenue. She was buried with her husband at Deansgrange and left
19K in personal estate.
