Pierce McGrath born circa 1830 married Alicia Hughes. Alicia died 30 Dec 1871 at Main Street,
Bagenalstown, just two weeks after the birth of a child. Pierce died 16 Jan 1892 at Bagenalstown,
Co Carlow.
1 Joseph McGrath born 25 Aug 1858 at Bagenalstown, Co Carlow. He was educated at St
Stanislaus’ College, Tullabeg and the University of London. He was called to the Bar but
never practiced. He was professor of maths and physics at St Patrick’s Training college
and was appointed secretary of the Royal University in 1892 and registrar of the National
University of Ireland in 1909. Joseph a widower married Eleanor Mary (Nellie) McAlister
on 29 Jul 1893 at St Marys’, Haddington Road. Eleanor was the daughter of Patrick and
Catriona McAllister. They went to Switzerland on their honeymoon and they had three
children. He was living at Raglan Road in 1901 (his wife and children were at the Spa
Hotel in Lucan) and at Kildare Street in 1911. He was vice-chairman of the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children, a life governor of the Royal Veterinary College of
Ireland, and honorary secretary and vice-president of the RDS. He was knighted in 1911
and died on 15 Mar 1923 at 11 Clyde Road.
1 Mary Mercedes McGrath born 26 Apr 1894 at Mount Sydney, Wellington Place.
She was an outstanding harpist and arranged music for the harp. She married
Daniel Joseph Bolger on 26 Jul 1922 at St Marys’, Haddington Road and they lived
at Milmount Gorey.
2 Joseph Stanislaus Fergal (Fergal) McGrath born 18 Nov 1895 at Wellington Place,
Dublin graduated Oxford University. He was a Newman scholar and became a
Jesuit priest.
3 Alice Mary McGrath born 1 Feb 1897 at Raglan Road. She was living at Silchester
Road, Glenageary and married Gerard Kane Smith on 9 Jun 1932 at St Mary’s
Haddington Road. Gerard was the son of Kane Smith, a farmer. Alice was the
owner of a manuscript describing the 1798 rebellion in Carlow written by William
Farrell of Carlow when he was an old man.
2 Mathew McGrath born circa 1861 at Bagenalstown. He married Josephine Delaney on
11 Apr 1893 at St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin. Josephine was living in
Queen’s County and was the daughter of James Delaney, a merchant. He was a director,
representative, manager of Baker, Wardell & Co Ltd. He founded a wholesale tea
merchants with three of his brothers in 1903 at 3 Bachelors Walk. They were living at
Dalymount in 1901 and Charleville Terrace, Glasnevin in 1911. Mathew suffered from
insomnia and so Mathew and Josephine went to the St Anne's hydro in Blarney. He died
by his own hand on 14 May 1913 at St Anne’s Hill, Blarney, Co Cork late of 3 Charleville
Terrace. Josephine died 12 Apr 1954 at St Vincent’s, Fairview, late of Sandymount aged 87.
1 Matthew James Pierce (Percy) McGrath born 30 Oct 1886 at 78 Dalymount,
Phibsboro. He married Magdalen Irene Grace on 8 Mar 1933 at Sandymount
Church. Magdalen was living at 80 Merrion Road and was the daughter of Thomas
Michael Grace, a merchant. He was a tea merchant of 3 bachelors Walk employed
50 people when the celebrated their 50 years in business in 1953 by having a
special Mass at the Church of the immaculate Heart of Mary on City Quay. He was
chairman of the Tea Council of Ireland and was on the executive committee of the
Wholesale Tea Dealers Association and they lived at Foxrock House. He was later a
director of Irish Shipping and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
2 Joseph Leo McGrath born 31 Jan 1900 at Dalymount. Leo a merchant of
Sandymount married Margaret Mary (Ita) Murray at Holy Cross, Dundrum on
17 Nov 1937. Margaret was the daughter of Charles Murray, a retired merchant of
Altamont, Dundrum. They lived at 3 Ely Square and at Netley from 1942 to 1951. He
was a tea and sugar merchant of 3 bachelors Walk, and after the war they also
supplied coffee. They employed 50 people when the celebrated their 50 years in
business in 1953 by having a special Mass at the Church of the immaculate Heart of
Mary on City Quay. In 1956 they became agents for HAG coffee. Percy died on
Christmas morning 1970 at St Vincent’s Hospital late of Dalkey and is buried at
Deansgrange.
3 James McGrath entered the priesthood and was parish priest of Onchan in the
Isle of Man.
3 Edmond McGrath born circa 1863 at Bagenalstown was educated at St Stanislaus’ College,
Tullabeg. He was a director, representative, manager of Baker, Wardell & Co Ltd and
founded a wholesale tea merchants in 1903 with three of his brothers. In 1921 his
chauffeur John O’Neill was shot death when driving him and his party to Portmarnock to
play golf. The ambush was intended for a military car. Edmond was a governor of Jervis
Street Hospital and a trustee of the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes. He died unmarried on
15 Mar 1947 at St Vincent’s Hospital late of Foxrock House & 3 Bachelors Walk, his nephews
Percy and Joseph his executors. He is buried at Deansgrange with his brother Daniel.
4 Daniel McGrath fourth son born circa 1866 at Bagenalstown, was a director,
representative, manager of Baker, Wardell & Co Ltd. He founded a wholesale tea merchants
with three of his brothers at 3 Bachelors Walk in 1903. He was a member of Milltown and
Portmarnock Golf clubs. He died a bachelor on 26 Jul 1941 at St Vincent’s Private Nursing
Home on Leeson Steet late of 3 Bachelors Walk and left 93k in personal estate. His funeral
Mass was held at the Pro Cathedral and he is buried at Deansgrange. He left six months’
salary to each and every one of his employees including pensioners and an additional £200
each, to his housekeeper and chauffeur. He bequeathed to the people of Bagenalstown over
48k. It was necessary to pass an Act in order to give effect to his wishes which was the
building of a Town Hall, a Sports Field Complex and a marriage dowry for deserving poor
young Catholic girls.
5 Anna McGrath became a nun and was superioress of the Convent of the Faithful Companions
of Jesus, Poles Ware in Hertfordshire.
6 Pierce McGrath born 17 Dec 1871 at Main Street, Bagenalstown was a keen cricketer. He was
a representative of J & G Campbell. He founded a wholesale tea merchants in 1903 at 3
Bachelors Walk with three of his brothers. In middle life he took up golf and was a member
and also a trustee of Portmarnock Golf Club. He married widow Margaret Mary Murphy of
Fernhurst, Shrewsbury Road, Donnybrook on 18 Apr 1920. Margaret was the daughter of
Patrick Burke. Margaret died in 15 Sep 1939 aged 74 and her will request that after the death
of her husband that her property be realised and donations made to various religious charities.
Pierce died on 26 Jan 1940 at a nursing home in Eccles Street. After requiem Mass at
Donnybrook Church, he was buried at Glasnevin.
