John W McCormack son of John McCormack was a shopkeeper of Nenagh. He married
Sarah Spain on 10 Aug 1874 at Nenagh Roman Catholic Church. Sarah was a shopkeeper
and the daughter of William Spain of Monfin, Nenagh. Their shop was at 1, 2 & 3 Castle
Street, Nenagh and by 1911 five of their ten children had survived. The grocery, wine,
provision and spirit stores were for sale in 1923. John died 28 Mar 1924 at Cudville,
Nenagh. Sarah died on 21 Nov 1932 at Nenagh.

Cudville in 1935.
2 William John McCormack born 15 May 1879 at Castle Street, Nenagh, Co Tipperary
was educated at Clongowes Wood. He was a medical doctor and a house surgeon
at St Vincent’s Hospital, and Holles Street, Dublin. He was licentiate of both the
Royal college of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons and qualified in 1906.
He was elect MO to Kiltegan, Co Wicklow in 1909. He married Germaine Plunkett
on 12 May 1909 at Rathgar Roman Catholic Church. Germain was the daughter of
Patrick Joseph Plunkett and his second wife Helena O’Sullivan of 14 Palmerston
Road, Rathmines. Her father was a director of McSwiney & Co (subsequently
purchased by Clerys) and she was half sister to Count George Noble Plunkett.
They lived at Bay View Road in Wicklow in 1911. He was made an honorary
member of the National Foresters in 1914 and was appointed a JP. William
tutored a first aid course for women in 1915 in Wicklow. Germaine’s younger
brother Gerald was KIA in 1915 and two years Later, William’s younger brother was
also killed. They moved to Wentworth Villas in 1916. In 1919 William tendered his
resignation as dispensary doctor when a workers strike with the local nuns
prompted a boycott of the convent. He died on 9 Jan 1934, at Wentworth Villas,
Wicklow from causes unknown having suffered hematemesis. His funeral mass
was held at St Patrick’s, Wicklow and he was buried at Rathnew.
Germaine and her daughter Sara were living at Airfield, Stillorgan in 1941 and she
was living at 102 Upper Leeson Street in 1946. Germaine died aged 69 on
5 Dec 1949 at St Gabriel’s Nursing Home, Dun Laoghaire and was buried with her
husband.
1 Paget McCormack eldest son born 2 Aug 1910 at Palmerston Road. He
married Irma Geraldine Wrenn on 4 Oct 1939 at Star of the Sea Church,
Sandymount. Page was a lieutenant in the Air Corps, Baldonell and
promoted to captain in 1940. Geraldine was the eldest daughter of James
Purcell Wrenn, an architect of Glenogue, Merrion Road, Dublin. In 1946 he
joined Air Lingus and travelled to America to study aircraft maintenance
and by 1954 was chief engineer. They lived at Sandycove and in 1961 he
went to Seattle to accept the second £1,250,000 Bowing 720 Jet (the St
Brendan) on behalf of Aer Lingus.
2 Donald F McCormack second son born 26 Jun 1911 at Palmerston Road was
educated at Clongowes Wood. He joined the national army and in 1934
was a lieutenant in the armoured car corps at the Curragh. Lieut Colonel
McCormack was appointed as Irish Liaison Officer at ONUC Headquarters
Leopoldville (Congo) and promoted to acting colonel in 1961. Donald died on
20 May 1968 and was buried at Rathnew. He was survived by his wife,
daughter and three sons. His portrait was unveiled at the Curragh as a
memorial in 1970.
3 Brendan McCormack born 19 Sep 1912 at 4 Wentworth Place, Wicklow
studied at NUI and was a doctor. He married Bettine Hue-Williams in 1941
at Hendon and they lived at Rathgar.
4 Mary (Maureen) McCormack born 25 Sep 1913 in Wicklow was a games and
physical cultural mistress at Darlington School in England. Mary of
Wentworth Villas married Dr Arthur Chartres Pilkington of Arcachon, Killiney
on 7 Jan 1936 at Dunboyne Church.
5 Germaine Marie McCormack 6 Apr 1915 at Palmerston Road was attached to
the teaching staff at St Vincent’s Hospital in 1934. She married Robert S
Cresswell in 1946 at Kensington.
6 Patrick Plunkett John Bertrand (Plunkett) McCormack born 11 Feb 1917 in
Wicklow educated at Clongowes Wood was a solicitor with a practice at Hume
Street.
7 Suraha (Siobhan) McCormack born 20 Mar 1919. She was living at Airfield and
married Joseph Ignatius Gannon at the Sacred Heart Church, Donnybrook on
21 Dec 1941. Joseph was an insurance inspector living at Sandycove and the
son of Joseph P Gannon, the secretary of a technical committee.
8 Liam C McCormack born 23 Feb 1922 in Wicklow was a solicitor and was called
to the bar in 1956.
9 Cathal Joseph (Charles) McCormack born 19 Mar 1923 in Wicklow. He married
and was County Surgeon for Laois.
3 Honoria Annie (Nora) McCormack born 26 Jul 1881 married Joseph Colgan on
2 Feb 1910 at Nenagh and lived at Fitzwilliam Terrace, Rathmines, Dublin. Joseph
was a commercial wine traveller.
4 Daniel Spain McCormack born 6 Jul 1883 at Castle Street, Nenagh, Co Tipperary
was a medical doctor living with his brother William in 1911. He died 28 Sep 1929
at 171 New King’s Road, London.
5 John McCormack born circa 1890 enlisted on the outbreak of war and served with the
Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish). Captain (acting Major) McCormack was
killed in action in Apr/May 1917.
