Thomas Mayne born baptised 1832 at St Andrew’s, Westland Row son of John Thomas Mayne
and his wife Jane Ward. His younger brother was the landscape painter - Arthur J Mayne.
Thomas of Sandford Avenue, Co Dublin married Susannah Rooney on 14 Jan 1860 at St
James’ Church, Dublin. Susannah was the eldest daughter of the late Patrick Rooney of
Dolphin’s Barn. They had fourteen children of whom seven survived in 1911. He was a
wholesale photographic chemist and photo apparatus manufacturer of Castle Street before
moving to 10 Lord Edward Street, Dublin. He was a politician and MP for Tipperary from 1883
to 1885 and an ardent lieutenant of Parnell. He was a member of Dublin Corporation and the
Dublin Chamber of Commerce. He was a life member of the RDS and they lived at Cremorne,
Terenure. Thomas died on 1 Aug 1915 at 1 Glenart Avenue, Blackrock, Co Dublin and is buried
at Glasnevin. He left 7k in personal estate and probate was to his wife. Susannah died same
place on 13 May 1937, her son Gerald the informant.
1 Anne (Annie) Mayne born 8 Nov 1860 at Sandford Avenue. As eldest daughter she
married Peter White on 18 Sep 1886 at the Church of Our Lady of Refuge, Rathmines.
Peter was a cloth merchant of Henry Street and the son of the late Thomas White, a
farmer of Clonalvy, Co Meath. Peter was a representative of the Irish Woollen
Company and secretary of the Irish Industries Association. He travelled to America
frequently obtaining orders for the cloth manufacturers in Ireland and worked
closely with Lady Ishbel Aberdeen, wife of the Viceroy of Ireland. He died at St Justin’s,
Dalkey (later the home of Michael Davitt) on 7 Apr 1893 aged 42 and is buried at
Glasnevin. He was survived by his wife Annie and 6 little children. At the time of his
death, he was organising the ‘Irish village’ concession stand for the Exposition in
Chicago. Annie moved to Chicago and took over his project. She later worked as a
dressmaker to wealthy socialites in New York running her own company.
1 Thomas Justin White born 18 Oct 1884 at Henry Street living with his
grandparents in 1911. He married Virginia F Gillette on 7 Aug 1915 in Manhattan.
He was general manager of the Hearst publishing organisation in 1929 and later its
Vice President. He was publisher and general manager of The Chicago Herald-
America. Thomas died 9 Jul 1948 in Chicago.
2 Christine Mary White born 12 Jul 1886 at St Justin’s, Dalkey emigrated to America
with her mother in 1893 and became a fashion buyer and dressmaker.
3 Carmel White born 21 Aug 1887 at St Justin’s, Dalkey. She joined the Red Cross
during WW1 and was based in Paris. In 1921 she was an assistant fashion editor
at Vogue. She married George Palen Snow on 11 Nov 1926. She was the editor-
in-chief of the American edition of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958 and later
the chair of the magazine's editorial board. She died 7 May 1961 at Manhattan,
New York.
4 Peter Desmond White born 25 Jun 1889 at St Justin’s, Dalkey baptised in Dalkey
emigrated to America with his mother and became an engineer.
5 Victor Gerald White born 24 Feb 1891 at St Justin’s, Dalkey emigrated to America
with his mother and became an artist.
6 James Mayne White born 3 Sep 1892 at St Justin’s, Dalkey emigrated to America
with his mother. He was an engineer and with the American Field Ambulance
Service during WW1.
Annie secondly married Edward Van Pelt Douglass circa 1906. She died 9 May 1936 in
Manhattan.
2 John Patrick Mayne born 8 Mar 1862 at 11 Castle Street. He died 26 Feb 1864 at 11
Castle Street.
3 Thomas Victor Mayne born 14 Jul 1863 at Castle Street. As eldest son he died
19 Oct 1889 at Williams Park from typhoid fever contracted in Paris. He is buried at
Glasnevin.
4 Arthur Mayne born 5 Nov 1866 at Castle Street died 1868.
6 Susannah (Susan) Mayne born 2 Jun 1868 at Heytesbury Street. She was bequeathed No
1 and 3 Glenart Avenue, and 5 Williams Park on the death of her mother by her father’s
Will. She died unmarried on 5 Dec 1940 at 1 Glenart Avenue.
7 Christina Mayne born 10 Jul 1870 baptised at Glasthule died 15 Oct 1889 and is buried at
Glasnevin.
8 Agnes Mayne born 27 Oct 1871 at Williams Park. She married Dr Eugene Dowling, a
widower with two young children and coroner for Cavan. Agnes became stepmother to
Helen and John Charles McQuaid (later Archbishop of Dublin). The children were unaware
that she was not their biological mother until they were young adults. Agnes died in 1964
at 108 Sandford Road.
9 Clare Mayne born 26 Jun 1873 at Dalkey married Dr Frank Dowling on 29 Nov 1902 at
Anerley, London. Frank was the son of John Dowling of Blackrock, Co Cork.
10 Gertrude Mayne born 14 Nov 1875 at 2 Glenart Avenue baptised at Blackrock. She
married Joseph Patrick Frengley in 27 Jun 1899 at St Joseph’s Chapel, Terenure. Joseph
was a doctor and the son of Jacob Frengley, a German watchmaker. They emigrated to
New Zealand.
11 Henry Christopher Mayne born 6 Aug 1878 at 2 Glenart Avenue died 13 Jul 1883 at
Williams Park.
12 Gerald Mayne born 12 Jun 1880 at Rathmines worked with his father in the photographic
business. He was assigned the premises and business at Castle Street and Lord Edward
Street and this was confirmed in his father’s will. He put the business premises of 33
Castle Street and 19 Lord Edward Street up for sale in 1924. He died a bachelor at Holy
Family Home, Roebuck.
13 Vincent Ferrer Mayne born 5 Apr 1882 at 5 Williams Park, Rathmines baptised at
Rathmines. He graduated Trinity College as an engineer and was a keen motorcyclist.
Vincent was an engineer of Kampala, Uganda and married Mina O’Reilly on 16 Sep 1914 at
Sligo. Mina Mina attended Loretto Rathfarnham and the only daughter of Michael O’Reilly,
of Albert House, Sligo. They lived at 1 Glenart Avenue from 1926 to 1932, Fitzwilliam Lodge
from 1935 to 1940 and had moved to Herbert Park by 1943. Vincent was working in
Pennsylvania in 1930. Mina died 13 Sep 1956 at a Dublin nursing home late of Herbert
Park and is buried at Deansgrange. Vincent died 30 Jul 1958 at Rathnew, Co Wicklow and
is buried with his wife.
1 Carmel Eileen Mayne only daughter born 2 Mar 1919 at the Namirembe Hospital,
Uganda. She married Richard Anthony Tierney at the Church of the Sacred Heart,
Donnybrook on 11 Feb 1943. Richard was a chartered accountant and the son of
Michael Tierney, a civil servant.
2 Desmond Francis O’Reilly Mayne only son born 22 Mar 1922 was called to the bar in
1943. He married Mary Patricia (Patricia) Digby from Dundrum. He moved as a
Crown Counsellor to Hong Kong in 1967 and served as director of the Legal Aid
Department from 1968 to 1981. Mary was an architect and university lecturer in
Hong Kong.
