Benjamin Williams Mathias born circa 1772 son of Benjamin Williams Mathias, a merchant of
Dublin graduated Trinity. He was a leading figure in the evangelical movement in the Church
of Ireland. He served as Chaplain to the Bethesda Chapel, Dublin from 1805 when he was
based as Dominick Street and retired from Bethesda in 1835 due to ill health. He lived at
Belmont from 1814 to 1820 and at Synnott Place in 1838. He was chaplain to the Lock
penitentiary in 1822. He was treasurer of the Hibernian Bible Society in 1829. He published
at least three texts including Compendious History of Council of Trent (1832), Twenty One
Sermons, chiefly preached in Bethesda Chapel (1838) and Doctrines of the Reformation. They
lived at Belmont House from 1814 to 1820 and moved to Eccles Street in 1821. They were at
Drumcondra Hill from 1822and moved to Dorset Street circa 1835. Ann was also an author.
She published ‘The laundry Maid’, ‘Conversations on Geography’ and in 1834 she released her
second edition of 'Domestic Instruction'. The congregation of the Bethesda settled an annuity
of 40L pa on Benjamin after he retired and 100L pa on Ann should she survive him. He died
30 May 1841 at 13 Peafield Terrace, Mount Merrion Avenue and was buried at Mount Jerome.
Ann died on 11 Jan 1848 at The Vicarage, Kinnerly, Salop, the residence of her son William
and was buried at Kinnerly.

2 William Benjamin Stewart Mathias born circa 1809 graduated Trinity and took Holy
orders. He married Margarett Martha Lingley on 5 Mar 1845 at Frodsham. Margarett
was the daughter of Thomas Lingley. Margarette died in 1855 aged 33.

Kinnerly.
2 Thomas Salwey Stewart Mathias baptised 18 Aug 1847 at Kinnerly.
3 Agnes Martha Stewart Mathias baptised on 25 Sep 1848 at Kinnerly died in 1849
in Liverpool.

5 Annette Stewart Mathias eldest daughter born 13 Dec 1851 died from scarlet
fever on 17 Nov 1855 at Everton.

7 Margaret Mathias born at Roscommon Street, Everton on 26 Feb 1855.
He secondly married Mary Cooper on 23 Sep 1856 at Christ Church Everton. Mary was
the daughter of Samuel Cooper. William died 1882 at Toxteth Park, Lancashire.

7 Charles Edward Mathias born 1859 in Liverpool.
3 John Alexander Stewart Mathias second son born circa 1810 graduated Trinity and was
and was admitted Kings Inns. He married Alicia Susanna Staples Swift on 3 Mar 1835
at St Thomas’ Church, his father officiated. Alicia was the daughter of John Swift of
Eccles Street. He took Holy orders and was junior curate at Enniskillen. John was
appointed chaplain to the government of Ceylon in 1852 at 600L PA. He was never
ordained as he got sunstroke, which caused him problems in later life. They had
fourteen children of whom twelve survived in 1860. Alicia died at Columbo on
11 May 1858.

Regiment on 4 Aug 1855 at Colombo. She died on 1 Aug 1861 aged 26.

Synnott Place baptised at St George’s, Dublin.
3 Alexander Stewart Mathias (twin) born 29 Dec 1841 at North Anne Street, Dublin.
4 Robert Staples Mathias born (twin) 29 Dec 1841 at North Anne Street baptised at St
George’s, Dublin.
5 William Stewart Benjamin born 8 Nov 1845 at North Anne Street baptised at St
George’s, Dublin.
6 Alice Ellen Mathias third daughter married Farquhar D Mackinnon on 4 Dec 1864
at Trinity Church, Pusilawa. Farquhar was the eldest son of Captain MacKinnon of
the Madras Army.
7 John Ahmuty Mathias, second son married Ellen Shirley on 8 Apt 1869 as St
Stephen’s Church, Westbourne Park. Ellen was the eldest daughter of J G Shirley
of Bayswater.
8 James Charles Stewart Mathias born circa 1855 In Ceylon. He married Georgina
Murray on 8 Jul 1882 at St John’s Notting Hill and they had three children. They
were living in Vicarage, Wootton Bassett in 1921.
9 Herbert E Mathias born circa 1859 in Ceylon.
John was resident at 40 Summer Hill and the Archdeacon of Colombo, Ceylon and
secondly married Sophia Antoinette Ellis on 2 Aug 1860 at St Thomas’ Church. Sophia
was the youngest daughter of Rev Arthur Ellis, or Ardee, Co Louth and was resident at 7
Great Denmark Street. This may be the same Archdeacon Mathias who attacked is wife,
a manservant and one other in April 1861 at Mount Hague, Kingstown after ’an aberration
of mind’. John died on 12 Mar 1880 at Portobello, Edinburgh. Sophia died on the
23 Feb 1899 and both are buried in Mount Jerome.

4 Ellen Charlotte Stewart Mathias only daughter married George Bomford Wheeler on
4 Jul 1838 at St George’s Church. George was a tutor and the son of James Wheeler.
Ellen died on 20 Mar 1844 at Blakney Parade, Sandymount.
