Robert Edwin Matheson born 1845 in Co Dublin son of Robert Nathaniel Matheson, librarian
at The Castle, and Louise Francoise Victorine Jossevil. He entered the office of the chief
registrar’s office when he was 18. He entered Trinity 9 years later and was enrolled at Kings
Inns and the Inner Temple. He married Cherrie Maria Hardy 30 Jan 1866 at the Congregation
York Street Chapel (a conservative, nonconformist evangelical Christian church). Cherrie was
the daughter of James Hardy of Belfast. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1875. When his
father died in 1876, Robert and his brother Charles Louis acted as executors and when his
mother died in 1879, Robert was her executor. He was Commissioner for Census in 1881,
1891 and 1901. He was Register General of Ireland in 1900, knighted 1907, and a Privy
Councillor in 1910. The family were living at Crosthwaite Park in 1911, they identified as
Christian and all five of their children had survived. Lady Cherrie died 12 Aug 1918 at Belgrave
Square, Monkstown. Sir Robert died 10 Jan 1926 at 44 Belgrave Square West, Monkstown and
is buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Victorine Charlotte Matheson born 10 Dec 1866 at Kenilworth Road, Rathgar. She
married widower Henry Courteney on 28 Nov 1916 at Monkstown Parish Church. She
died a widow in 1930 in Dun Laoghaire and is buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Cherrie Maria Louisa Matheson born 12 Oct 1870 at Kenilworth Road, Rathgar. Cherrie
was an accomplished artist and a close friend of the playwright John M Synge but had
rejected his marriage proposal. She married Kenneth Arthur Hobart Houghton on
25 Nov 1902 at Monkstown parish church. Kenneth was a schoolmaster living at
Montpellier Place and the son of Henry Houghton. They moved to The Cape Province
where Kenneth took up a teaching post at Lovedale College, a mission school for
Africans in Alice in 1903. Cherrie died on 12 Jun 1940 in South Africa.

prominent economists worked at Rhodes University.

3 Helen Constance Matheson born 20 Nov 1876 at Kenilworth Road, Rathgar. She married
Robert John Fleming on 22 May 1906 at the East Assembly Rooms, Bray. Robert was a
doctor living at Crosthwaite Park and the son of John Fleming, a merchant. They were
living in Devonport in 1921 with their two sons. Helen died a widow at Trowbridge in
1962.
4 Robert Nathaniel Matheson born 13 Sep 1878 at 108 Rathmines. He was a solicitor living
with his parents and identified at Plymouth Brethren in 1911. He married Norah K
Ormsby on 1 Dec 1915 at the East Assembly Room, Bray. Norah was the daughter of
Thomas Ormsby, solicitor of Beaumont, Waltham Terrace, Blackrock. He was a partner
in Matheson, Ormsby Prentice and on the board of Messrs Hoyte & Sons. Robert died
on 18 Mar 1950 at Beaumont, Blackrock. Norah moved to Sidcup, Kent after the death
of her husband and died in 1973.
1 Norah Kate Charity Matheson born 9 Oct 1916 at Baggot Street, parents’ resident
at Beaumont, Blackrock. She was living at Waltham Terrace and married Allan
Gordon Greenwood on 17 Jan 1948. Allan was a company director resident at
North Lancs and the son of Harold Greenwood.
2 Noel Ormsby Matheson born 25 Dec 1917 at Baggot Street, parents’ resident at
Beaumont. She moved to England where she worked as a warden/secretary.
3 Robert Ormsby Hardy Matheson (twin) born 12 Oct 1920 at Baggot Street, parents’
resident at Beaumont. He married Eileen Hilda Mary Watkins in 1935. Edith was
the daughter of Frederick William Watkins of Aston Park. Robert was the
general manager of Messrs Eric Webb of Abbey Street in 1962.
4 Winifred Eileen Phylis Matheson (twin) born 12 Oct 1920 at Baggot Street, parents’
resident at Beaumont. Winifred moved to England and never married.
5 Thomas William Ormsby Matheson born 2 Sep 1922 at Baggot Street, parents’
resident at Beaumont. He moved to England.
5 Winifred Clare Matheson born 27 Sep 1881 at 108 Upper Rathmines. She was the
organiser of the Sandes Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Homes in 1944 and was awarded an OBE.
Winifred died unmarried on 22 Jul 1962 at Tunbridge Wells and is buried at Mount Jerome.
