House
NAME Grange, Marley House, Marlay House, Marlay Park
AREA LOCATION Grange Road, Rathfarnham
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838 - 1845 and 1898-1913 place it spanning the townlands
of Haroldsgrange and Clarkestown and it is annotated as Marley House
on both.
GENERAL A seven-bay structure (five-bay deep) of two storeys over part basement,
with a bow at either end and a handsome Doric-columned central door executed in Portland stone
and granite. It had two mountain streams flowing through it (one being the little River Dargle) that
fed two large fish ponds. It was for sale by David La Touche from 1864 and was sold on 305 acres in
1866 for £11,500 to Edwin Harvey Wadge through the Landed Estates Court. The furniture went to
auction in 1866 and included four poster beds and two massive tables from the library and dining
room. It was sold in 1924 to Robert Love to run as a dairy however Hughes Dairy seemed to be too
great a competition. A portion of the land was sold to Grange Golf Club in 1925 so they could
expand to an 18 hole course. This also helped finance the setting up of the estate as a market
garden by Robert Love.
YEAR BUILT The current house was built in 1764 on the site of the original house.
VALUATION No valuation found, in the 1911 census it is noted as having 28 rooms
occupied by the family.
