Archibald McNeill born 1822 at Carnegie, Glenarm, Co Antrim. He was a shopkeeper, grocer and
baker and married his cousin Rosetta McAuley at Glenarm, Co Antrim on 1 Oct 1857. Archibald died
15 May 1889 at Glenarm. Rosetta was living with her son John at Herbert Park in 1911. She died
at Woodtown, Rathfarnham, the home of her son James on 6 Jul 1917.

3 Charles McNeill baptised 27 Apr 1862 at Glenarm. He was living at Malahide in 1901 was a
civil servant. He was Hon Sec of The Royal Society of Antiquaries in 1915 and a regular
contributor. He was associated with the Irish Manuscripts Commission from its inception in
1928 and was conferred with a D Lit in 1947. His reports on collections of Irish interest in the
Bodleian Library were highly regarded. Dr McNeill died a bachelor on 25 Jan 1958 in a private
nursing home late of 7 Pembroke Road.
4 Hugh Aloysius McNeill born at Glenarm, Co Antrim on 27 Jan 1866. He was a Professor of
Classics at the Catholic University of Dublin and was an accomplished chess player. He married
Abigail Mary J Murphy in Dublin in 1896. They were living in Howth in 1901 and by 1911 were
living at Sandford Road in Ranelagh. They had five children of whom four were still alive in 1911.
Huge died 19 Oct 1935.

5 John McNeill later known as Eoin MacNeill born 15 May 1867 at Glenarm, Co Antrim. He was
educated at St Malachy's College (Belfast) and Queen's College, Belfast graduating BA in
economics, jurisprudence and constitutional history in 1888. In 1893, together with Douglas
Hyde and others he founded the Gaelic League, an organisation devoted to the preservation
of the Irish language, literature, and traditional culture. He was a journalist of Malahide and
married Agnes Moore on 19 April 1898 at All Saint's Church Ballymena. Agnes was the daughter
of John Moore, a solicitor. He was civil Servant by 1899 and Professor of Ancient Irish History at
the National University from 1909. He advocated the formation of a national volunteer force
and in 1913 became its first Chief of Staff. He is best known as the man who tried to stop the
1916 Rising. He served as a TD from 1918 to 1931. He was MP for Londonderry City from 1918
to 1922. A Nationalist politician he served as Minister for Industries 1919 to 1921, Minister for
Finance January 1919 to April 1919, Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann from 1921 to 1922 and
Minister for Education from 1922 to 1925. They lived at Netley, Blackrock from 1919 to 1931
and were at Leeson Street by 1939. He was arrested at Netley on a number of occasions and
the house was searched regularly although the arms that were apparently hidden there were
never found. Eoin died 15 Oct 1945 at Leeson Steet and was buried at Kilbarrack cemetery.
Agnes died in 1958 and was buried with her husband at Kilbarrack.
1 Niall MacNeill born 5 Feb 1899 at 14 Trafalgar Terrace, Blackrock. He attained the rank
of colonel in the Irish Army. He retired and worked for the Ordnance Survey of Ireland
and was an assistant director in 1935. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy
and a fellow of the Royal Entomological Society. He died 6 Nov 1969.
2 Brian MacNeill born 8 Mar 1900 at 14 Trafalgar Terrace, Blackrock. He was shot and
killed by National Army troops at Benbulben on 20 Sep 1922. He is buried at Kilbarrack.
3 Eibhlin MacNeill born 23 Sep 1901 at Hazelbrook, Malahide married Professor Michael
Tierney on 28 Jun 1923 at the Church of the Assumption, Booterstown. Michael was the
son Michael Tierney of Ballymacward, Co Galway.
4 Toirdhelblach (Turloch) Mac Neill born 25 Apr 1903 at Hazelbrook, Malahide. He was a
garda superintendent and died a bachelor at the officer's mess, Phoenix Park on
1 Feb 1955.
5 Maire MacNeill born 7 Dec 1904 at Malahide.
6 Roisin (Rosa) MacNeill (twin) born 7 Aug 1906 at Hazelwood, Malahide. She married
Dr David Donovan Coyle on 21 Jun 1944 at Donnybrook Church.
7 Giollaspuic MacNeill (twin) born 7 Aug 1906 at Hazelbrook, Malahide died an infant.
8 Séamus Mac Neill born 18 May 1908 at Hazelbrook, Malahide. He was a dentist and was
appointed as the Government's first full time Dental Advisor in 1953.
9 Eilis MacNeill born 27 Jun 1914 at 19 Herbert Park took a degree in architecture and
graduated in 1939. She was living at 63 Upper Leeson Street and married Anthony
McDowell on 11 Apr 1942 at University Church. Anthony was a barrister and the son of
John McDowell, a solicitor.
6 James McNeill, youngest son born 27 Mar 1869 was educated at Blackrock College and Emmanuel
College Cambridge. A civil servant he was appointed to India and was based in Calcutta. He was
registrar of the Co-Operative Societies in 1904 and took up special duties in the West Indies and Fiji in
connection with India Immigration. He was an Irish politician and diplomat and served as the first
High Commissioner to London. He married Josephine Ahern in 1923. He was the second Governor-
General of the Irish Free State from 1927 to 1932 and they lived at the Viceregal Lodge. After a dispute
with de Valera, he retired a month ahead of retirement in November 1932. He died 12 Dec 1938 at a
London nursing home following an operation and was buried at Kilbarrack cemetery in Howth.
Josephine died 19 Nov 1969, late of Leeson Park, at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin and was buried in
Kilbarrack cemetery with her husband.
7 Annie McNeill was a shopkeeper and married William McGavock on 21 Jul 1891 at Glenarm. They
continued to run the grocers shop. Annie was terminally ill and died a few hours after her house was
raided by constabulary on 17 Feb 1923.
8 Margaret McNeill born 14 Apr 1872 at Glenarm died a spinster at her home, 91 Haddington Road on
9 Apr 1947 and was buried at Kilbarrack.
