Andrew Byrne born circa 1855 in Dublin City son of Michael Byrne, a druggist and his wife
Margaret. He married Julia Angela McMahon on 17 Ap 1882 at St Laurence’s Chapel, Kilmacud.
Sissie was living at Drummartin, Dundrum and was the daughter of James J McMahon and his
wife Maria Julia. Her father was living at Drummartin Hill and was a government official. Their
marriage notice in the newspaper asks Australian papers to please copy. Her father, a retired
superintendent in the Dublin Metropolitan Police died in 1884 and both American and Australian
newspapers were asked to copy. Andrew was a clerk to a solicitor in 1882, a law clerk in 1885
and a solicitor’s apprentice by 1889. In 1901 they were living at Killeen Road, in 1911 they were
living at Mount Pleasant Avenue and nine of their 10 children had survived. Julia was working as
a school attendance officer in 1911 and living at Ardmeen in 1920. Andrew, a legal accountant
died 26 May 1931 at 33 Moyne Road, Ranelagh and Sissie died same place on 30 Dec 1939.

2 Margaret Mary Frances Byrne born 6 Feb 1885. She was living with her parents in 1901
and 1911. She died 28 Feb 1944 at the Meath Hospital late of 33 Moyne Road.
3 Gertrude Mary Byrne born 12 Jul 1886 at 16 Cullenswood Avenue. She was living with
her parents in 1911 and was a school teacher.
4 Dermot McMahon Byrne born at 47 Sackville Street on 26 Sep 1889 baptised at the Pro
Cathedral. In 1911 he was a pressman living in Wicklow and was accepted as a clerk in the
Ireland Census Office. In 1914 he was a journalist with the Drogheda Independent and
was gazetted into the Royal Field Artillery. He saw action in Mesopotamia & Bushire. He
married May Rowlinson in 1918 at Chorlton.
He was a sergeant with F Company of the Auxiliary Division of the RIC in 1921. One of his
intelligence reports from the 21 May 1921 during the occupation and burning of the
Custom House in Dublin reads, ‘As the first two tenders entered Beresford Place and were
proceeding in the direction of the front entrance of the Customs House a heavy hail of fire was
opened on them from the windows of the Customs House, the Railway line and the adjoining
street corners. The tenders immediately halted to get into action and as the crew dismounted
from the second tender bombs were thrown at them from the Railway line overhead.'
He was a freemason with Malahide Lodge and Castlebar Lodge. He was pensioned out of the
RIC as a District Inspector 3rd Class in 1922. He married Louie Poole in 1927 at Bucklow,
Cheshire. He died in Cheshire in June 1975.
5 Andrew Joseph Mary Byrne born 27 May 1891 at Harold’s Cross. He married Mary Jane
Strange at Truro, Cornwall on 21 Aug 1919. He was living at Ardmeen, Blackrock in 1921.
6 Veronica Mary Joseph Byrne born 24 Mar 1893 at 127 Harold’s Cross. She was living at 33
Moyne Road and married Thomas O’Brien at Church of the Holy Name, Rathmines on
29 Oct 1924. Thomas was a commercial traveller living at 22 Reuben Street and the son of
Thomas O’Brien, a farmer.
7 Joseph Mary Byrne born 29 Mar 1895 at Serpentine Avenue was a haemophiliac and died
24 Dec 1900 at St Joseph’s Hospital late of Killeen Road.
8 Mary Columba Antonia Josephine Byrne born 23 Mar 1897 baptised at St Andrew’s,
Westland Row. She was living with her parents in 1901 and 1911and unmarried in 1933.
9 John Vincent Carmelo Byrne baptised at St Andrews in 1901. He was an electrical engineer
when he married Mary Bridget Venebles on 12 Jun 1935 at Church of St Michael, Inchicore.
Mary was living at Golden Bridge Avenue and the daughter of John Joseph Venebles, a shop
keeper.
10 Colette Byrne born at Holles Street on 25 Jun 1906, parent’s resident at Mount Pleasant
Avenue. Collette was living at 33 Moyne Road when she married John Joseph O’Donnell on
16 Sep 1933 at the Church of the Holy Name in Rathmines*. John was a builder and the son
of James O’Donnell.
* Colette’s father is listed as Francis but we feel this is an error on the register as the address works as
does one of the witnesses.
