Macartney family of Bloomville
William Macartney born circa 1715, younger son of Isaac Macartney and Anne Haltridge of
Dromore. William was MP for Belfast from 1747 to 1760. He married Catherine Bankes.
Catherine was the daughter of Thomas Bankes of Corfe Castle, Dorset, England. They had
two sons and four daughters (Anne Julia, Jane or Margaret). William died on 27 Jun 1793.
1 Arthur Chichester Macartney eldest son born circa 1744. He was of Lesh Co Armagh
and Murlough, Dundrum Co Down and was admitted Kings Inns. He married Ann
Lindsey of Gloucester Street in August 1779. They lived at Abbey Street initially. He
was a KC and chief remembrancer of the Court of the Exchequer. He was a director
of the Grand Canal Company. They lived at 47 Stephen’s Green and Bloomville,
Roebuck. Arthur put the lease Bloomville up for sale in 1810 and again in 1821. He
died on 29 Sep 1827 at Bloomville which was put up again for sale after his death.
1 William George Macartney born circa 1780 took Holy orders and was vicar of
Killead, Co Antrim for over 40 years. He died on 12 Nov 1858 without issue and
devised is property to his nephew John William Ellison.
2 Frances Macartney eldest daughter born circa 1781 married Willcocks Huband in
March 1803 at Stephen’s Green. Wilcocks was a barrister and a commissioner of
bankruptcy. He was the son of Joseph Huband and Catherine Reynolds. Wilcocks
died 7 Mar 1834 at Clifton and Frances died 6 Aug 1868 at Herbert Street.
1 Catherine Huband eldest daughter married Arthur Burgh Crofton of
Clonskeagh Castle.
3 Catherine Macartney second daughter 1794 married Reverend Thomas Ellison.
1 John William Ellison only son born circa 1818. He was of Palace, Clogher, Co
Tyrone in 1859 and was granted the Macartney arms quartered with Ellison,
and the additional name of Macartney on the death of his uncle and died in
1904.
2 Annette Macartney only daughter.
4 Elizabeth Macartney youngest daughter died in December 1817 at Stephen’s Green.
5 Letitia Macartney fourth daughter died from cholera at Portici near Naples on
19 Sep 1854.
6 Matilda Macartney died 16 Dec 1858 at Naples.
2 John Macartney second son born circa 1747. He was knighted in 1747 and was created
a baronet of Ireland in July 1799. He was deputy chief remembrancer in 1802 and was
one of the chief promoters of the canal system in Ireland. He married Anne Scriven,
descended from the Barclays of Urie, in Scotland and they had a least seven children.
1 Maria Macartney born circa 1779. She married Joseph Macartney in September
1803. Joseph was the son of the Rev Dr George Macartney of Antrim. Maria
died in 1869. Her portrait is in the Burrell Collection in Scotland.
Sir John secondly married Catherine Burgh. Catherine was the daughter of the Rt Hon Walter
Hussey Burgh, Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer. They had two children and lived at 31
Upper Merrion Street. They moved to the isle of Man in 1804. He died of a broken heart on
29 May 1812 at Ramsay, Isle of Man survived by his wife.
3 William Macartney was a merchant in Hamilton’s Bawn in 1794 and was late a captain in the
local militia.
4 Daughter Macartney married Mr Harris, (either Anne Julia, Jane or Margaret). She died
at the Isle of Man in 19 May 1812.
5 Daughter Macartney died in Sandymount after her clothes caught fire in February 1797.
