Luke White born circa 1740 was a book seller/buyer of books and lottery ticket seller of 18
Crampton Court in 1775 and in 1776 published a catalogue of his books. He moved to 6
Crampton Court in 1779. He married Elizabeth de la Maziere on 10 Feb 1781 (ML issued
7 Feb 1781). Elizabeth was from the North Strand and the daughter of Peter de la Maziere.
By 1783 he was at 85 Dame Street and in 1789 he quit the retail business and sold out to
William Jones. By 1792 he was trading in securities from 42 Dawson Street and in 1799 he
defaulted on a promised state loan and lost his deposit of 75k. The same year he purchased
the estate at Luttrellstown from the 2nd Earl of Carhampton. Elizabeth died in Dublin in July
1800.
1 Thomas White eldest son born circa 1885 attained the rank of Colonel in the Co Dublin
Militia. He married Juliana Vereker on 31 Aug 1819 at Viscount Gort's residence by special
licence. Julianna was the eldest daughter of the second Viscount Gort. Thomas was an
MP for Dublin and died at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool on 6 May 1847 and was buried at
Clonsilla. He died without surviving issue, his personal property went to his wife and
Woodlands devolved to his brother Henry as his brother Samuel had no issue. Julianna
died at 12 Merrion Square on 16 Feb 1866 aged 74.

2 Anna Maria White eldest daughter born circa 1786 married Charles Trench of Farmley in
December 1807. Anna a widow died 19 Dec 1847 at Baden Baden.
3 Samuel White second son born circa 1887 was in the army and attained the rank of Colonel
and served in the peninsular wars in the army of the Duke of Wellington. He was MP for
Leitrim for a number of years and lived at Killakee, Rathfarnham. He married Anna Salisbury
Rothe on 4 Jul 1821 at St George's, Dublin. Anna Salisbury was the second daughter of George
Rothe of Mount Rothe, Co Kilkenny. Samuel died on 28 May 1854. They had no children and
his larges estates in Dublin and Leitrim were left to his brothers and widow. Anna Salisbury
died on 27 Nov 1880 aged 79 at Killakee, Rathfarnham. They are both buried in Whitechurch
Parish churchyard.
4 Luke White born circa 1788 was MP for Longford. He died unmarried on 19 Aug 1854 at
Laureen, Ballyshannon, Co Leitrim and was buried in Leitrim. His brother Henry inherited his
estates.
5 Henry White fourth son born circa 1790. He was with the 14th Light Dragoons in 1811 and
served in the Peninsular War. He married Ellen Sophia Dempster on 8 Oct 1828 at Bangor,
North Wales. Ellen was the daughter of William Soper Dempster of Skibo Castle, Sunderland.
Henry was the liberal member for Co Dublin from 1823 to 1832. They lived at Seamount from
1837 and they had changed the name to St Helens by 1844.
6 Elizabeth White second daughter died a spinster on 25 Apr 1863 at 56 Fitzwilliam Square.
7 Matilda White youngest daughter born circa 1799 married Hugh Harmon 4th Lord Massy of
Hermitage, Co Limerick on 22 Jun 1826 at Clonsilla Church. Lord Massey died of fever on
27 Sep 1836 at Kilkee. He was survived by two sons. Matilda died 27 Feb 1883 at Milford
House, Limerick
1 Hugh Hamon Ingoldsby Massy born circa 1827. He became the 5th Baron Massy
on the death of his father. Hugh died in 1874.
2 John Thomas Massy born circa 1836. He married Lady Lucy Maria Butler in 1863.
Lucy was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Carrick. John became the 6th Baron Massy
on the death of his older brother Hugh. John died in 1915.
Luke secondly married Arabella Fortescue on 6 Jan 1801 in Cork (ML issued in 1800). Arabella was
the daughter of Henry Fortescue of Cork and a few days later they returned to Luttrellstown
Castle. He purchased land at Killakee and in 1803 bought the Lareen Estate of Lord Annaly at
Kinlough, Co Leitrim for 70k. He contracted for the loan of 2 million to Government for services
to Ireland in 1806. His next foray was into politics and he mounted election campaigns for himself
and his sons. He eventually won the seat for Leitrim in 1818. Luke died aged 43 on 25 Feb 1824
at Park Street, Grosvenor Square, London. His body was repatriated and he was buried at Clonsilla,
Dublin. His will was lodged in the prerogative court in April 1824. His property rental amounted to
a return of 30k per annum and he had 100k left in money and securities, having apparently spent
200K on elections. Thomas received 5k a year and Woodlands, Samuel - 7k pa, Luke - 4.5k pa,
Henry - 13k pa and William £500 pa plus 10k in lieu of the annuity when that term came to an end.
Each of his three daughters got 10k and his wife got 1k pa. He obituary says he was an itinerant
bookseller working for a Mr Warren, bookseller in Belfast selling cast off novels and volumes of
broken sets from a cart. He then worked as a clerk for Mr Valence, auctioneer when he came to
Dublin before setting up at Crampton Court. Arabella died at Raheny on the 28 Mar 1853 aged 91,
her son William her executor.
8 William White born circa 1801 the youngest son of Luke White, MP and bookseller of Dublin.
He married Isabella Bayley at Finglas Church on 2 Oct 1824 and they lived at Shrubs, Coolock,
Co Dublin. Isabella was the daughter of the Rev Henry O'Neale Bayley, rector of Nenagh and
his wife Anne Penelope Grueber. William died 20 Feb 1857 at 4 Fitzwilliam Square North.
Isabella died at Shrubs on 30 Jan 1866. Their son Luke lived at Eversham, Stillorgan.
