Luke Fox fifth son of Michael Fox of Tully Co Leitrim was born circa 1857. He graduated
Trinity and was called to the bar in 1784. He went on the North West circuit. He married
Anne Annesley of New Ross in January 1791 at Rathfarnham Castle. Anne was the daughter
of Richard Annesley of New Ross and niece to the Right Hon Lord Viscount Loftus of
Rathfarnham. Luke was MP for Fethard in 1793 and was appointed a justice of the Common
Pleas in 1800. He was arraigned for his conduct in the House of Lords in 1804; he faced
impeachment as he was accused of judicial misconduct, but this ultimately came to nothing.
In 1811 he was the judge at the trial of James Byrne, (coachman to John Jocelyn of Fair Hill,
Dundalk brother of the bishop) who had accused the bishop of making indecent advances
towards him. James Byrne was indicted for conspiracy to vilify the character of the Bishop of
Ferns. Charles Kendle Bushe acted for the prosecution. James Byrne was found guilty and
Judge Fox sentenced him to 2 years imprisonment and to be thrice publicly whipped. He was
dragged through the streets of Dublin tied to a cart and whipped by a cat O’ nine tails.
They had a house in Merrion square and also lived at Trimleston in Old Merrion. He resigned
in 1816 and died suddenly at Harrogate on 26 Aug 1819. He was buried at St John the Baptist,
Knaresborough, Yorkshire (West Riding). Trimleston and his residence at 25 Merrion Square
was put up for sale after his death. Trimleston didn’t sell and in 1823 it went for auction.
In 1822 Percy Jocelyn, now Bishop of Clougher was found in another compromising position
with a 22 year soldier in London. He jumped bail and fled the country. James Byrne was
exonerated by the public and £300 was raised by public subscription to give him and his family
a more comfortable life as a hackney in Portland Place in London.
Anne secondly married Thomas West on 19 Jul 1931 at Leamington. Thomas was of Kemp
Town, Brighton.
1 Michael Charles Fox eldest son born circa 1792 was a barrister and lived at 11 Ely
Place. He married Catherine Bushe on 29 May 1818 at St Peters, Dublin. Catherine
was the daughter of Charles Kendal Bushe, the Solicitor General of Ireland and his
wife Nancy Crampton. Charles died on 18 Sep 1824 from typhus fever at Kilmurry,
Kilkenny the seat of his father in law.
1 Anna Selina Fox eldest daughter married James Martin on 28 Mar 1844 at St
Peter’s Dublin. James was the only son of Robert Martin of Ross, Co Galway.
2 Luke Loftus Bushe Fox only son born 31 Aug 1822. He was educated at
Christchurch Oxford and admitted Kings Inns but never practiced. He married
Marian Browne on 27 Apr 1859 at Hampstead Parish Church. Marian was the
daughter of Benjamin Browne. They lived at Cordara, Co Longford. Like died
12 Feb 1892 at Notting Hill. Probate to his son Loftus.
1 Loftus Henry Kendal Bushe-Fox born 1863 was a tutor at St John’s
College, Cambridge and married Theodora Willoughby in 1906. He
died in 1916.
3 Louisa Elizabeth Sydney Fox younger daughter born circa 1824 died a spinster
on 19 Nov 1881 at Upper Leeson Street. Probate to her brother Luke Loftus
Bushe Fox.
2 Luke Fox second son died at Fitzwilliam Square on 11 Jun 1827.
3 Mary Anne only daughter born circa 1799 married the Rev Edward Wade on 1 Mar 1821
at St George’s Church, Dublin. Edward was the third son of the Robert Wade of
Clonebrany, Co Meath. Edward was first incumbent of Trinity Church, Derby and died at
Parsonage House, on 22 May 1867 aged 74 after 31 years of incumbency.
1 Robert Tottenham Wade eldest son born circa 1822 in Ireland died 7 Aug 1848 at
Litchurch Lodge, St Peter, Derby
2 Edward J Wade born circa 1830 in Brighton.
3 Henry T Wade born circa1836 in Leicester.
