The Man at the Wheel’s Invitation
Avast there! My hearties, and heave your ship to, don’t forget an old shell back whose jacket is blue. He has stood by ‘the wheel’ boys, in many a storm he was rocked by the billows the night he was born. For years he’s been ploughing the deep up and down, at last has arrived in port all snug and sound. He met with a skipper that took him in tow and steer’d into port, near abreast Cooper’s Row. He says that such port wine is not to be found and the smell of the brandy would knock a man down.
He has also provided, for those who may call, a place of Amusement called the Malakoff Hall. The owner has tried to do all he can, I dare say you know him his name’s Irish Dan. He’s the gem of all gems from the emerald Isle; if you call there to night it will be worth your while. I’m sure you will laugh till you’re ready to cry, if you see him perform in the Irish Schoolboy.
He’s a thorough-bred Irishman, from Roscrea he came, in the county Tipperary, Dan Lowrey’s his name. Now shipmates and townsmen I need not repeat, that I stand at the Wheel, now in Paradise Street. Excuse me, old shell-backs, I can’t express what I feel, but remember your shipmate, The Man at the Wheel – Dan Lowrey.
