Hutton family of Wyckham, Dundrum
Lucius Octavius Hutton fourth son of Thomas Hutton and his second wife Margaret Hutton
baptised 1 Sep 1830 at Eustace Street was educated at Seapoint House Collegiate School. He
married Margaret Bruce on 3 May 1854 in Belfast. Margaret was the eldest daughter of the
Rev William Bruce of the Farm, Belfast. Lucius and his brother Thomas joined their father’s
coach building business. They lived at Wyckham, Dundrum from 1897 to 1911. Lucius was a JP,
director of the Royal Bank of Ireland and the Patriotic Assurance Company. He was chairman
of the Great Northern Railway and retired in 1908. Lucius died 22 Apr 1911 at Wyckham and
left 41k in personal estate.
1 Helen Margaret Hutton born 13 Jun 1855 as 16 Summerhill was educated in London.
She was unmarried and living with her father at Wyckham in 1911. She was living at 13
Arkwright Road, Belsize Park, Camden in 1939 and died unmarried at Arkwright Rd on
19 Dec 1942, formerly of Belfast and left 19k in personal estate. Probate to her nephew
Godfrey Edward Scharff.
2 Arthur William Hutton born 9 Dec 1857 at 116 Summerhill. He was a coach builder and
established a branch of the family business in Chichester Street, Belfast in 1886. He
married Mary Anne Drummond at the Roslyn Chapel, Hampstead on 27 Mar 1890 and
they moved to Belfast. Mary was born in Manchester in 1862 the daughter of James
Drummond, a Unitarian minister and Frances Classon. She was the granddaughter of
William Hamilton, a Unitarian minister, theologian, poet, scholar, and controversialist. In
1892 a reprint of Arthur Young’s book ‘Tour of Ireland’ was edited with notes and an
introduction by Arthur. Mary was an Irish scholar involved with the Gaelic revival and
with the establishment of the Feis na nGleann in 1904. Arthur was a supporter of Ann
Milligan and the Gaelic League and the custodian of a bust of Anna Hutton (fiancé to
Thomas Davis) which, after his death, was passed to his wife. Arthur died 10 Jul 1908 at
19 Mount Street late of Tullyroe, Belfast. His sister Alice the informant. Mary was a senator
Queen’s College, Belfast from 1908 until 1922 when she moved to Dublin with her
daughter. She converted to Catholicism in 1911 and spent some time in Rome. She was
the first woman member of the Council of the Royal Dublin Society. She was awarded
the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature by the National University of Ireland in 1933
chiefly for her work on the Táin Bó Cuailnge legend which took almost 10 years to complete.
Mary gave an interview in 1944 in which she explained her love of the Irish language came
about when she was 9. She was on holidays with her parents in Antrim when she heard the
servant girl in the boarding house singing an Irish melody which mesmerised her and stayed
with her. She died on 29 Aug 1953 at Upper Fitzwilliam Street and was buried at
Deansgrange.

Scharff of Tudor House, Dundrum on 6 Jun 1889 at the Unitarian Church on Stephen’s
