Judge John Linehan eldest son of Matthew Linehan and Mary Blake of Cork. John was educated at
St Finbarr’s, Cork and worked as a journalist for the Freemans Journal. He was called to the Irish
Bar in 1891 and married Louise Caroline Gilzean-Reid on 03.01.1898 at New Priory Kilburn. Louise
was the daughter of Hugh Gilzean-Reid, a newspaper proprietor of Dollis Hill, London. In 1901
they lived at Fitzwilliam Street and in 1911 at Herbert Street. John took silk in 1912. The family
lived at Woodview from 1914 to 1921. John was Crown Prosecutor in Co Clare and Co Cork and
became County Court Judge for Tyrone. They went on to live at Totnell House, Leigh, Sherborne,
Dorset. John died 21.01.1935 at Tyrone County Club in Omagh and was buried at Batcombe.
Louise of Totnell House died 20.12.1941 and was buried at Batcombe, Dorset.
1 Lieutenant Hugh Matthew Linehan born 29.11.1898 at 21 Upper Fitzwilliam Street.
Hugh of Totnell Lodge, Leigh, Sherborne, Dorset a journalist for North Eastern
Newspapers serving with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve married Mrs Catherine
Durning Sladen 2nd daughter Sir William Dampier of Hilfield Manor, Dorset on
29.07.1943 at Poole. Catherine had previously been married to David Alexander Scott
Sladen and they had divorced in 1932. Hugh died on 18.09.1974.
2 Major John Dermott Gilzean Linehan younger son born 25.10.1899 at 21 Upper Fitzwilliam
Street. John of the Royal Artillery married Barbara Elizabeth Curle youngest daughter of
James Curle on 07.08.1935 at Holy Trinity Church, Melrose.
3 Dorothy Craig Linehan eldest daughter born 06.02.1901 at 21 Upper Fitzwilliam Street.
Dorothy married John Kenneth MacFarlan of the Royal Artillery son of Lieutenant Colonel
J B MacFarlan of Invermay, Budleigh Salterton, Devon in 1936 at St George Hanover
Square.
4 Caroline Florence Linehan born 02.06.1909 at 18 Herbert Street. Caroline was with the
family on the pier in Dun Laoghaire with the funeral party in 1935. She also was an
attendant at the marriage of her brother John in 1935. Caroline married Roland A Oliver
in 1947 at Kensington.
5 Ethel Louise Linehan born 15.09.1911 at 18 Herbert Street.
Robert Ree a Crier for Judge Linehan got locked in Dungannon Courthouse after everyone headed to the
Dungannon Agricultural Show in 1913. A passer by brought a ladder but Robert fell whilst climbing out
sustaining cuts and bruises.
Edward Murphy replaced Robert Ree and he was shot in 1916 waving to an acquaintance at the Unionist
Club at Stephens Green during the Easter Rising.
Robert Fyffe replaced Edward Murphy as his Crier and stayed with the Judge until 1929.
