Bernard Byrne born 1841 at Bellurgan, Dundalk, Co Louth joined the merchant Service and
got his service papers. He married Laura Charlotte Le Cesne circa 1881 in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. He was manager of the Companhia Bracileira (Brazilian Lloyds) in Rio de Janeira.
Captain Byrne was elected a director of the Sapucahy Railway and of the Amazon Steam
Navigation Company in 1890. Laura died 5 Oct 1910 at 9 Sussex Square, Hyde Park, London
aged 62. She left 9k in personal estate. The Amazon Steam Navigation Company was wound
up in 1911 and the assets distributed. Bernard was a director of Manaos Harbour Ltd in
1919 and a retired Company Director by 1921. He died 5 Apr 1924 at 70 North Gate,
Middlesex. He left 51k in personal estate, probate to his son Edward.
1 Edward Le Cesne Byrne only son born circa 1883 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was
educated at Exeter College, Oxford. Edward was a barrister with offices at 6 Crown
Office Row, Temple, London in 1914. He was a member of the Middle Temple and
of the Irish Bar. He was with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during WW1. He
married Kathleen Josephine Sutherland on 18 Dec 1924 at the Church of the Sacred
Heart, Wimbledon with Nuptial Mss and Papal Blessing. Kathleen was the daughter
of J J Sutherland, barrister of Leinster Road, Dublin. They went to Australia in 1925
and lived at Ardlui from 1926 to 1931. Edward died 3 May 1929 at Elphis, Lower
Mount Street late of Ardlui. A requiem mass was held in the private chapel at Ardlui
and he was buried at Deansgrange. He left 2k in personal estate and was survived
by his wife and two young children. Kathleen moved to Cloghereen in Foxrock and
later to Highfield, South Hill Avenue, Blackrock.
