James Seymore Strachan Mowbray born 20 Jul 1866 was the eldest son of Seymour Mowbray of
Killeany and and his wife Jane Anne Hutchen. He was educated at Leamington. He qualified as
an engineer and worked at the LNW Railway works at Crewe. He married Mary Elizabeth Despard
on 16 May 1906 at Roskelton Church. May was the only surviving daughter of William
Worthington Despard of Queen’s County and Elizabeth Suzanna Tracy Despard. May was born at
Orchardton Dundrum, the residence of the Kemmis family (her mother’s first husband was Arthur
Kemmis). The family were living at Killeany in 1911. James was a Land Commissioner and a keen
rider to the hounds in Queen’s County. He enlisted in 1914 and was a captain with the 8th
Battalion, Black Watch, Royal Highlanders. He was killed in action on 25 Sep 1915. He is
remembered on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France and at Roskelton Church, Mountrath.
He left 3k in personal estate.
1 Dorothy Mowbray only child born 21 Mar 1907 at 63 Lower Baggot Street. She married
William Seymour Jessop Carter on 18 Jul 1934 at SS Philip and James, Booterstown.
Dorothy was living me her mother at Booterstown House. William was a barrister living
at Nottinghamshire and the son of Thomas Henry Carter, a land agent. William served
with the Royal Artillery during WWII.
May Elizabeth Mowbray nee Despard secondly married Arthur Edward Lyang on 15 Mar 1919 at
the Church of St John and the marriage was registered in Rathdown. Arthur was a graduate of
Trinity College and a teacher at Preston School Abbeyleix. He was the sixth son of William F Layng,
an accountant and his wife Alice Wilson. Before he married, he was professor of classics at Queen's
University, served as an officer with the Canadian Rifles and the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and was
wounded at Loos. He was appointed principal at Midleton College, Middleton, Co Cork in 1920 and
took the appointment of headmaster at Foyle College, Londonderry in 1928. He retired due to ill
health in late 1932 and they lived at Booterstown House from 1933 to 1934. William died at Marina,
Roches Point, Cork on 12 Aug 1956 late of Sutton, Co Dublin aged 73, funeral to St Fintan’s Sutton.
May died 19 Jan 1961 at St Mary’s Private Hospital, Bristol late of Marina, Roches Point. Probate to
her daughter.
