William Butler III of Bunnahow born circa 1809 son of William Butler and Anne Blake-Forster.
He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin but never graduated. He married Ellen Lambert
daughter of captain Peter Lambert and Eleanor Seymour of Castle Ellen, Galway in 1835.
They lived at Bunnahow House, Clare. William junior was found dead in his carriage by his
coachman on the return journey from the Tulla Steeple chase on 23 Jan 1843. Ellen died
04.08.1881 aged 66 at 15 Brighton Vale, Monkstown.
1 Anna Matilda Butler eldest daughter born circa 1837 married Nicholas Butler JP of
Walterstown on 18.12.1856 at Kilkeady Church, Clare and afterwards in the Roman
Catholic Church of Crusheen. Nicholas died on 25.09.1892 aged 65 years at 59 Belgrave
Square and Anna died on 23.11.1916 aged 80 years at 1 Bellview Terrace, Clontarf.
2 Ellen Butler born circa 1838 married Charles Vyse of Seamount House son of late
Richard Vyse of Bedfordshire circa 10.07.1868 at Marylebone Church. Ellen died on
01.06.1876 at Walterstown, Clare the residence of her brother-in-law Nicholas Butler.
Charles late of Seamount died on 11.07.1880 aged 33 years at Walterstown.
3 William Thomas Butler IV of Bunnahow born circa 1839 married Margaret Creagh
McNamara only child of Alexander Foley McNamara of Cork on 23.04.1861 at St
Finbarr’s Parish Chapel, Cork. William died 24.04.1867 aged 28 years at South Terrace,
Cork.
1 Belinda Butler born 08.05.1862 at South Terrace, Cork.
2 William Butler born 01.07.1863 at South Terrace, Cork.
3 Alexander Butler born 07.06.1864 at South Terrace, Cork.
4 Margaret Butler born 21.06.1865 at South Terrace, Cork.
5 Isabella Butler born 18.05. 1866 at South Terrace, Cork.
6 Justin Butler born 22.05.1867 at South Terrace, Cork.
4 Peter Lambert (Lambert) Butler born 08.02.1840 married Mary Anne Ryan daughter of
Patrick Ryan and Alicia Dwyer on 07.09.1868 at St Aloysius Church, Sevenhill, South
Australia. He was a surgeon and they were living at Charlton, Roebuck in 1878.
Lambert died after a long illness from consumption on 29.03.1880 aged 40 years at his
residence 52 Kenilworth Square, Rathgar. Mary Anne living in 1901 at 37 Fitzwilliam
Street and in 1911 in Rathmines.
1 William Lambert Butler only son born 1869 educated at Stonyhurst College,
Blackburn, Lancashire and died there of pneumonia on 03.02.1886 aged 15 years.
2 Belinda Alicia Butler born 12.10.1871. Belinda became a Benedictine nun on
09.06.1913 at the Carmelite convent, Transquilla, Knock and took the name Sister
Columba. She died on 10.03.1963 aged 91 years.
3 Mary Ellen Butler youngest daughter born 28.06.1873 in Brighton, England educated
at Alexandra College. She was a novelist and short story writer. She married
Professor Thomas O’Nolan of 77 Waterloo Road son of Francis O’Nolan on 05.08.1907
at the Roman Catholic Chapel in Donnybrook. She was a member of the Inghinidhe na
hÉireann and an executive of the Gaelic League. She contributed to a number of
Nationalist publications including the United Irishman using the penname Máire de
Buitléir. According to Arthur Griffith it was Mary who suggested the name ‘Sinn Fein’
for his party. Thomas died on 09.12.1913 aged 40 years at 77 Waterloo Road and
Mary died on 27.11.1920 in Rome, Italy.
5 Daughter Butler born posthumously on 18 May 1843 at Drumcon, Co Clare.
